My 290x will not post , no matter which pcie slot / psu i use . My r9 290 however , does post in my current setup just fine , which leads me to believe something on the card is dead. A few days ago , my gpu was running hot ( not out of spec though , 90C ) , and i smelled burning electronics , so i immediately shut off the computer . I dismantled the card and cleaned it , as well as adding new paste. I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary , although the pcb under the vrm looks like it has dried up ( almost delaminated , except its not ) . when plugged in , the fans spin , but the motherboard is stuck on VGA post , and i get no signal , pointing to a gpu error. I'd say the gpu is fried ,however , it stays stone cold even when powered on , while dead gpus/cpus usually heat up regardless . It almost looks to me as though the VRM is dead (in which case i can attempt to find a donor VRM off a gtx 480/580 ). Has anyone ever gotten this before ? The card is just out of warranty unfortunately.

Hi so since i cant decide on which... i found a sapphire nitro r9 390 on craigslist for $200 but i also see AMD has released their new RX 480 for $240 and i cant decide which is better. I dont care about power consumption or anything but if i were to overclock the r9 390 would i get the same performance as the RX 480. Thank you.

Who aged better -- Kepler or Hawaii? The two former top-end architectures from 2013 have received different treatment over the their lifespan. While Nvidia simply moved along with a new GPU architecture (Maxwell), AMD's GCN have seen much less revolutionary changes, with only iterative architectural upgrades from Tahiti to the latest HBM-powered Fiji GPUs. AMD were definitely forced to spend time with the driver optimizations instead, with some notable effects. -- TL;DR -- Source: http://www.babeltechreviews.com/nvidia-forgotten-kepler-gtx-780-ti-vs-290x-revisited/view-all/

Does Anyone Here On LTT Forums Live In Hawaii?!

Could a mod move this to the tech news forum please, I feel like it'll get more exposure there. If listings are correct then the 300 series looks like it will be an entire re brand. The 390 Hawaii, 380 Tonga and 370 Pitcairn. It then seems logical to think that AMD will be giving the HBM cards their own branding, much like Nvidia do with the Titan series. AMD recently stated that they don't want to be known as the value brand and I don't think this will help them, if the information is correct. Re-branding the entire series and making the HBM cards enthusiast grade isn't likely to help them in the market share department unless HBM lives up to the hype. It sounds like AMD was surprised by the 900 series and makes me think that AMD are still struggling to make chips more power efficient. The source is wccftech so take it with a pinch of salt. Image: R9 290x PCB, RAM and Hawaii XT GPU, courtesy of VRWorld (see source) With AMD's release of their new R9 300 series graphics cards, a wave of speculation that these GPUs are complete rebrands has followed. Many have pointed to the near identical specifications, with others reporting different programs recognising the cards as their predecessors. According to VRWorld, here's what AMD had to say: While there appear to have been minor changes, I don't think these cards should be complete rebrands. I think the Fury X should've been the R9 390x, with Hawaii PRO and XT returning as the R9 380 and 380x respectively, and released at lower pricepoints. However, while it's fine to be upset at the prices these cards have been released with, I think it's silly to just be upset that these are rebrands. When you think about it, the R9 290x was AMD's flagship back in the day, whereas now their flagship is the Fury X, making the R9 390x the modern-day equivalent of the 280x. In other words, technically the cards have moved down a rung in the ladder, they just haven't changed one number and have priced these cards incorrectly. Source

Perhaps many of you are familiar with Hawaii, the venerable GPU powering the fastest graphics card in the world the R9 295X2 along with AMD's enthusiast R9 290x and R9 290 offerings. So it may come as a shock to you to hear that this GPU is in fact the most power efficient General Purpose GPU in the world to date. GSI Helmholtz Center's latest super computer the L-CSC is the first ever to break the 5 gigaflops/watt barrier. Powered by AMD's FirePro S9150 accelerator based on the Hawaii GPU, L-CSC has earned the #1 spot in the latest Green500 list of the most power efficient supercomputers in the world. The previous #1 spot holder the TSUBAME-KFC powered by Intel Ivy Bridge CPUs and Nvidia K20 GPU accelerators fell into third position. Capable of 4.4 gigaflops/watt, compared to the AMD powered L-CSC which is capable of 5.27 gigaflops/watt. Source said David Cummings, senior director and general manager, professional graphics, AMD. said Professor Dr. Volker Lindenstruth, professor at Goethe University of Frankfurt, head of IT department of GSI, and chairman of Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies. Well, well, well AMD you did it, I've turned my back on Nvidia and peering into the endless possibilities AMD is going to through our way, with high performance affordable graphics cards. What are they planning? What's the Expected price range for the 290X? Have you been turned to AMD as well? Considering they're throwing a $299 dollar card with a Fire Strike score of 7000 (or something)AMD is really pushing the boundaries of where the PC gaming industry is leading. Please share you're opinions on all things GPU' 14! Thanks! And yes I am to the forums so hi!

Do you think it is worth to wait for Hawaii cards? I'm only spending approx. 300$ for Graphics card(even if I have more budget) I'm planning to get GTX 760 which is cost aroung 12k(in our country) or 300$ Should I wait or get the 760? Thanks in advance

AMD Radeon R9 280X is a successor to Radeon HD 7970 Source: http://videocardz.com/45608/amd-radeon-r9-280x-replace-hd-7970-features-3gb-gddr5-memory kinda confusing name IMHO

Videocardz.com has managed to snap a picture at one of the AMD add-in-board partners which revealed some very interesting information. Most of this info is either intuitive or has been revealed before, except one thing which is the 4GB of memory, this is quite surprising as we know from previous leaks that the flagship GPU (Hawaii) will have a 384bit buss interface exactly the same as the 7970 , what's interesting however is that unlike the 7970, the 384bit buss on the new Hawaii flagship can address 4GB of memory which suggests a newly designed memory hierarchy architecture for Volcanic Islands.
-
This is still a rumor so I want to preface this with a bucket of salt, grab a few grains. Now into the juicy bits, there have been some very interesting leaks going around after AMD's announcements in GPU14, a few sources speculated that Nvidia might be cutting prices of their entire line-up in November other sources speculate that it won't be enough & Nvidia will have to release more products. Namely a cheaper GK110 card. This GK110 card will likely have 1920 CUDA cores, 3GB of memory on the same 382bit buss & will likely cost around $449 after Nvidia cuts the $400 price tag on the 770 down to at least $349. There is also speculation that this rumored card might be using an entirely new GPU (GK114), I personally believe that's very doubtful especially considering the Nvidia engineers are very hard at work hammering away at Maxwell. Here is the supposed GPU-Z screenshot of the specs. Looking at the specs and the rumored price, this card could theoretically go against AMD's R9 290 with the help of aggressive core clocks & a more affordable price point. Sources : #1 #2

In a Frobes interview with AMD's Matt Skynner, the head guy for AMD's graphics division, he was asked about AMD's upcoming series of graphics cards code named Volcanic Islands & he revealed some very exciting new info. Additionally, Matt Skynner said that a GeForce Experience-like software is in the works, I'm not really a fan of GeForce experience but we'll see what it brings to the table. Source

AMD announced that it will webcast the September 25 product showcase. A live video will be available on ir.amd.com and a replay of the webcast can be accessed approximately one hour after the end and will be available for 30 days after the event as well as on the AMD Gaming Facebook page and AMD's Youtube page. Edit, they have also scheduled a livestream on their YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHfmM6QYWNM Source: http://ir.amd.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=74093&p=irol-newsArticle&ID=1855822&highlight=

One of the Nvidia board partners PNY has already slashed the price of the 780 slightly, down from $650 to $626. Nvidia does not allow its board partners to reduce prices of their cards below the official MSRP and so the price tag isn't visible until you go into the product page. This might be in preparation for the upcoming 9000 series.

With new games shipping in fall I think I have to upgrade my rig in order not to fall short on max settings and 60 frames per second. During the last couple weeks I couldn't stop thinking about getting myself a second MSI GTX 670 Power Edition, but due to my lack of experience in multi-GPU business it's a hard buying decision. Since both cards only have 2GB Vram I'm wondering if I run into a bottleneck with games like Battlefield 4 and future triple-A titles. My i7 2700k also raises the question if there's enough bandwith for 2x PCI-E 3.0 cards on an MSI z77a-GD55 board. So I started looking at other solutions such as overclocked GTX 780s and the upcoming AMD Volcanic Islands, but as far as I've seen, 700-GPUs offer nowhere near the performance of an SLI setup, other than the higher bandwith and more Vram. Psu will be an XFX Black Edition 750W Which solution should I go for? Thank you very much and have a good day.

It turns out AMD has been holding back, a Hawaii GPU actually has 3072 GCN cores, 256 more than the R9 290X. AMD hasn't introduced a graphics card based on a fully unlocked Hawaii GPU yet, likely due to yield issues similar to Nvidia's early yield issues with GK110. This discovery came in light of a reverse engineered Hawaii GPU, which revealed what the floor plan actually looks like. This is likely why AMD did not release die shots for the Hawaii GPU when it launched the R9 290X and the R9 290 back in October. AMD will likely release fully unlocked Hawaii GPUs as R9 300 series products after a die shrink from 28nm to 20nm, which brings the die size and heat output down to a manageable 314mm² from 438mm². HardwareCanucks posted an article stating Australian retailers are requiring $200 down when pre-ordering the new Radeon R9-290x and BF4 bundle. The article states this is currently only the case for Australia, it isn't known if other retailers such as Newegg or Ncix (or other popular retailers from around the globe) will require the same down payment. These cards aren't available for pre-order in places other than Australia, but time will tell if this changes. The article stated quote ''Naturally, this money will go towards the purchase of the card but for a product we know so little about, that’s a monetary risk some may not be willing to take.'' \ Thoughts? Opinions? Hopes?

http://techreport.com/news/27000/amd-only-certain-new-radeons-will-work-with-freesync-displays 290/x and 285 will definitely support it. 260X MIGHT support it with a driver update (no clue how that'll work). It's not a lengthy article and this is basically the meat of it, but this is straight from AMD's PR people. EDIT: no news on current APUs or Carrizo supporting it.
