Hi all, so I noticed that in Windows 11 Home 23H2, when formatting drives, Windows will now add 3 folders to the root directory of every drive you format. Those folders are: Program Files, WindowsApps, and XboxGames. See below: So my questions are: #1 Why? #2 How do I stop Windows from doing this? When I hit delete on these folders, Windows does not let me and Program Files and WindowsApps remain. Only the XboxGames folder can be deleted. When I hit format on a drive, I want that drive empty. I don't see why Microsoft feels its ok to start arbitrarily changing how computers work.

Hey everyone, I've gotten an issue that I've seen many others have around the internet with many ways to solve the issue of not being able to create new folders on win 10 (messing with regedit, doing scannow command, going to a previous windows build), but whatever I try I can't seem to create a new folder in file explorer or the desktop via the context menu (new folder option is gone) I was hoping there would be some help here. Thanks in advance :3

For some reason I appear to be having these random files generate on my secondary HDD. Most of them appear to be empty however some of them contain a file with the extension .file that I can't open. I am able to remove these folders with no problem but they show up again after a little while. Are these some sort of windows config files? Thanks for any help.

Hi everyone, Yet another problem with my MacPro... Regarding my last post, I did eventually manage to reinstall OSX El Capitan on the mac pro, but now that it all works, I still get some problems. I use this mac for music recording and I use Pro Tools 12.6 as my main DAW. When I create new music, you can save it as a folder with the Pro Tools file, the audiofiles etc. Normally on my windows pc and my macbook pro I can save it wherever I want (desktop, downloads, documents you name it), but the Mac Pro gives me the notification that those folders do not exist. I really hope someone here does know how to fix this problem because the temporary solution I have now is saving everything on a USB device or in the cloud (those 2 options are not that practical if you're working with audio). Also, when I want to extract .zip files, it gives the same error.. The error message is as follows: *filename* could not be extracted to "folder name" (error 2 - file or directory does not exist) The specs of the Mac Pro are as follows: 2x 2,4Ghz quad core Intel Xeon 28Gb 1066MHz DDR3 memory ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024mb GPU 500GB Samsung evo 850 SSD (bootdrive) 1TB ??? I need something that can help me sync some folders in microsoft one drive to a folder on my PC. Because I have java code on one drive that I modify between my gaming PC and my laptop and I cant compile it unless its on my PC. All it needs to do is automatically copy the files from one drive into a folder so I can compile it whenever I need to. I tried these -Shortcuts to onedrive (Didn't compile it correctly) -Windows Sync Center (Only to figure out that it only works on windows 10 pro :P) Anyone got an idea of just an easy simple way of doing such a thing?

Hey Everyone, I am having an issue with folders on my home network, when ever i make a new folder or change a name on the my servers drive from another computer, it causes windows explorer and the windows task bar to hang for 1 - 2 minutes. As you can imagine this makes keeping my server organised a pretty laborious task, and i would certainly appreciate any light that could be shed on this subject for me. Naturally i have done some research on this and am thinking its possibly due to having too many files on the drive causing indexing issues? The drive is currently about 75% full with thousands of small and large files. Thank you in advance to anyone willing to give it a stab or offer any alternatives to my current setup. A little more info: Network - Standard 1gb with single switch and cat5e cables, Gets good transfer speeds Server is - AMD A4 3.5ghz, 4gb DDR3 ram, 2Tb HD, running an older asrock gaming mobo (No Raid array), Windows 10 Pro Connected pc - Amd fx 6300 4.5Ghz, 8Gb DDR3 RAM, 256gb Crucial SSD, 1Tb HD, Windows 10 Pro

I apologize in advance for anything extremely dense that I ask, for I am very inexperienced in networking. I just recently built my new home server/NAS (specs at the bottom of my sig) and I want to get started actually using it as a NAS. However for multiple reasons I have to run Windows on it so I'm looking for the best way to share files/folders on the server between that and my main PC. It seemed for a bit like setting up a homegroup was the best solution since they are both Windows 10 PCs, but the problem is I need to keep the NAS secured from others on the network, either by making it only visible to my PC or putting a password on access to its shared files, which it doesn't seem like a homegroup can do either of after some brief research. So what would be a good solution for me?

Hello I need help! This randomly happened and i did not change anything. btw this is windows 7 i am using When I was looking through files and wanted to see it by date i would press "Arrange By Date". It shows nothing its shows as the folder is empty. Now when I choose arrange by folder it shows all the files and all the files are in there. This applies to documents music pictures and videos. And if i were to say get a new file or modify it and put it in the folder and arrange it by date the file only those files does show up. Also the searches doesnt show the full list of files i have anymore unless i click the actual file and open it up then it would show on the search list. yes i know if i choose sort by date it would work but i prefer not that method. I have tried the following: http://www.howtogeek.com/forum/topic/arrange-by-not-working-windows-7-libraries but this does not help is there a way to fix this without doing a clean install? please help and thanks! yes i did a virus scan and nothing detected

Gday all, I've used Windows network shares for years and honestly it's like dragging yourself over hot coals but there's no real alternative for an average joe like me. Basically, every once in a while something would break, sometimes due to Windows update and sometimes for no discernible reason. The outcome is always the same; many hours/days of faffing about on google, cursing, tearing down security measures, and it's all working again albeit with a lower level of security somewhere or another. So the time now has come when all the brute force measures have been exhausted and I have no more firewalls to burn down, no more passwords to remove or permissions to give. Two days ago my sister complained that her W10 laptop could no longer connect to the W7 home server. So after the usual fighting with Windows and trying out a dozen internet suggestions and registry edits, it was working again. Not only that, my Mac could now also connect to the home server (it stopped working months ago and I gave up trying to make it work). In summary, the conclusion was something about disabling NetBIOS and IPv6 all around and also a bunch of registry edits as usual. HOWEVER, it seems that the flipside of that is my main W7 PC now can't connect to home server. They're both gigabit wired to a router, but are also directly tethered to each other by a 10gbit SFP cable (from linus' tutorial a couple years back). This setup has worked flawlessly and never given me any problems with either speed or connectivity, even stuff like remote desktop. But no longer. I feel like I've read every post on technet twice already. I could try to recall and list everything I've tried but not before the heat death of the universe. Between work and rest and what little play I can get the last thing I want to do is screw around with Microsoft's nonsense networking. I'd just about do anything to have working, simple file sharing. Pinch a cat, slap an old lady, set Ballmer's house on fire, whatever. ---- So for the first time in my life I'd like to sit down and try a surgical approach with the hopefully kind people here at LTT. This has never worked in the past because all the places I posted (Stackexchange, Technet, Reddit, 7Forums etc) have either responded by completely ignoring noob like me, throwing out a bunch of incomprehensible jargon and code, providing pseudo-polite tech support that's irrelevant at best, or just inexplicable downvoting. I know my way around a cmd window, so tell me what to do, what you need to know, what diagnostics and reports to produce, hell I'll even let you teamviewer in here to find out what's going on. Please help. Home server: Windows 7 Ultimate x64, Gigabyte Z67, i7-3570K, 16GB DDR3, GTX1060, whole bunch of hard drives and Mellanox Connect-X 2 Workstation: Windows 7 Ultimate x64, MSI Z77, i7-3770K, 24GB DDR3, GTX1070, not as many hard drives but also has a Mellanox Connect-X 2 Router: Netgear R6400, cat5e cables all around Thanks in advance guys.

This is a follow-up on a previous post of mine: I have 250+ folders that have a name format somewhat like this: XX #### - Name of the Folder [Two capital leters, a four digit number and the title of the folder] The issue is that sometimes I have the folder title all written in upper case, lower case, or both. Or I may have a hyphen, underscore or a space between the letters at the beginning and the numbers or between the numbers and the title... ... And it is UGLY and confusing Is there any way that I can automatically set all folder names to fit a format?

Heyo, so I am trying to create a symlink between two folders with a python script but I've hit a dead end where I get the following error: I've seen around that it might be related to permission, but as far as I know that should not be the case. The shares mounted in mnt are mounted with 777 permissions and the folders created by my script are also created with 777 permission. Anyone got any ideas, here be the code: def createProjectDir(name, projectname, shotname, ftype): #create a directory, with options to create the symlink setup I want temp = projectname + '/' + shotname dirs = glob.glob(projdir + '/' + temp) dir = '' target = projdir + '/' + temp + '/' + name if name in dirs: print('Link/folder already exists, stopping') else: if ftype == 'cache': dir = cachedir + '/' + temp + '/' + name os.makedirs(dir,mode=777) elif ftype == 'render': dir = renderdir + '/' + temp + '/' + name os.makedirs(dir,mode=777) elif ftype == 'project': dir = projdir + '/' + temp + '/' + name os.makedirs(dir,mode=777) os.symlink(dir, target, target_is_directory=True) Any help is greatly appreciated, still kind of new to this python business. Thanks!

Hello LTT Forum ! My father let me help him solve a tech problem at his office. This is the current situation: One of his colleagues works as a 3D modeler and has this folder on his laptop where he keeps all of the company's 3D files for all their projects. On the same network with this laptop , is a QNAP TS 231 NAS that has an identical copy of my father's colleague's 3D models folder among other valuable folders which contain various company documents. All the folders on this NAS are shared folders to which everyone on the network has access. This is how the exact copy stored n the NAS is created/maintained : At the end of the working day, the 3D modeler goes in the folder on his computer, sorts by "Date Modified" and copies everything that was modified that day then goes in the shared folder on the NAS and he pastes and replaces the respective files. Not only is this an extraordinarily tedious job but it is also very dangerous thus I offered to find and set up a way for this task to be performed automatically in real time by the computer. What I am trying to do is find a way to configure the local computers on the network and the NAS in the following way: Certain designated local folders on each employee machine to be real time synced to the copy on the NAS. That means if the 3D modeler makes a modification on a file in the designated folder on his computer then as soon as he saves that modification in the file , the copy on the NAS is updated with the just modified version. While googling I found out this is called setting up " a sync job". The NAS is running something called QTS a QNAP proprietary OS which also has an appstore. I downloaded various utilities developed by QNAP for sync jobs however I couldn't figure out how to make them work. So far I tried: Qsync which as far as I could figure was more of a Dropbox type of service that would run on your NAS. You would have to manually drag and drop files into a Qsync folder for it to sync with the NAS or have them created there in the first place. Configuring it requires setting up accounts for each user and then installing a client on each user's machine. I was on a hurry last time I tried it , I will give it another go tomorrow. Netbak Replicator , another QNAP tool which states that it provides real time sync but is in fact a back up tool, not what I need. Hybrid Sync which seemed to be the only one out of the bunch that could actually work however I could not figure out how to properly set it up so tha tthe "pick up" folder would be a local folder on a machine and the "destination" would be on the server. If anyone has any idea on how to configure this app please walk me through a short tutorial below. So here is what I ask of you internet. Is there a feature in Windows that can work with the QNAP NAS OS ( it's called QTS, the server is running version 4.3. something ...I forgot) so that I pick the folder on the machine and then set it up in the NAS that it should constantly check that folder for modifications and bring it up to date in real time? I would be baffled if for all the complicated features Windows has it doesn't have something fit to my needs. If you have done this exact thing before please let me know exactly how you did it. Also if there are any third party apps that could solve my issue please let me know. It would be great if anyone could provide a tutorial . Thank you.

On Windows, there is an option to share files/folders with specific people. So here are my questions: -Are these people the ones who are connected to the same network as me? -How do I find them? I tried typing the name of the computer, the name of the user I wanted to share with, but nothing happened. -How do I share with only 1 or 2 pcs in an office, and not with all of them?

Just now i did see something very streange on my lap top. Now after turning on i did see something strange, all files and folders (on desktop, downloads and documents) has disappear. This windows is fresh instaled and i only use this lap top for YT and movies by using BS Player so i dont think its some malware or virus. I only have instaled: Fortnite, BS Player, Torrent and Baidu Wifi Hotspot, chrome and VLC Media. Now i wanted to watch movies but torrent disappear, iso cd files and all files that was on Download and Documents. So i know that no one touches my Lap Top and i know that i did not delete anything so i was very confused. Searched almost 1h for files but no luck, then i decide to restart Lap Top and after restart, all files, folders and programs where back and this is first time in my 13 years of using PC that this happens Any idea what was this??? Is it possible that HDD is defected or i have intruder in my PC???

Backstory & Problem I've had my PC for 3-4 months now, and it's worked perfectly. I've played all my favorite games on it, and I can't wait to upgrade it in the near future. Recently, I decided to play War Thunder. Upon completing the download, the game could not install correctly. It read "DISK WRITE ERROR." Upon further research, I found others had this error, and fixed it by unchecking the 'Read-only' box under the Steam(C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam) folder properties. Upon unchecking the 'Read-only' box, no error messages appeared, and it loaded all the files inside the folder perfectly normally. To my surprise, War Thunder still couldn't install and still said "DISK WRITE ERROR." I returned to the properties of the folder, only to find it had switched back to 'Read-only' on its own. Dafuq?! Upon many more attempts, I am still unable to fix the issue. Things I've Tried - attrib -r +s C:\Steam (Does nothing) - Unchecking 'Read-only' box (Does nothing) - Ran Malwarebytes & Avira scans, removed anything detected, and tried again. (Didn't fix my problem) - Removed "CREATOR OWNER" user from the Steam folder permissions, and gave full access to every other user on the list. (Some check marks are grayed out and others are black, does that mean anything?) - Moved the Steam folder directly to the C:\ drive (Didn't fix my problem) System Specs PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant CPU: AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor (Purchased For $98.95) Motherboard: ASRock 980DE3/U3S3 ATX AM3+ Motherboard (Purchased For $63.98) Memory: Mushkin ECO2 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory (Purchased For $56.99) Storage: PNY CS1111 240GB 2.5" Solid State Drive (Purchased For $59.00) Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB Superclocked Video Card (Purchased For $119.99) Case: Phanteks Enthoo Pro ATX Full Tower Case (Purchased For $90.98) Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA GS 550W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply (Purchased For $79.99) Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 Home Full - USB 32/64-bit (Purchased For $10.00) Wireless Network Adapter: TP-Link TL-WN881ND PCI-Express x1 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi Adapter (Purchased For $18.79) Monitor: Samsung S24D360HL 23.6" 60Hz Monitor (Purchased For $159.99) Keyboard: EagleTec K005 / KS03 Wired Gaming Keyboard w/Optical Mouse (Purchased For $25.99) Other: Panasonic ErgoFit Earbuds (Purchased For $9.99) Other: Amazon Basic USB Speakers (A100) (Purchased For $13.99) Total: $808.63 Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available Generated by PCPartPicker 2016-07-28 21:20 EDT-0400

So i've recently built my first proper gaming pc and i'm using a 120GB SSD as a boot and a 1TB HDD as storage. I was trying to relocate my library folders from the SSD to the HDD so i would have more space and i think i've irreversibly screwed it up. This is what it looks like currently, my pictures folder has become my D: drive and my documents folder is in the Jonathan file somewhere. It won't let me restore the pictures file to default and the other folders don't seem to want to move much. Is it worth just resetting my PC (the only thing i've installed is google chrome so i'm not losing anything of value) to get the files back to their original settings and locations? I don't tend to keep much in my library folders so having them on my SSD isn't too big a deal but i would like to put Steam onto the HDD because of the large size of games and whatnot (not having it on the SSD doesn't bother me that much).

After buying a 1TB HDD to go along with my 120GB SSD, I decided to move all of my library folders to my HDD to save space on my SSD. However, during the process, my Documents library has been deleted and replaced with my Desktop library. The files are identical and if I delete one file from one location, it deletes it on the other. How can I get my documents folder back? I had no data so I don't care about that. I have no restore points and changing the file location does nothing either. Any answers would be much appreciated, so thanks in advance.

Hi. Basically, i upgraded to Win 10 about 2 weeks ago, when it was still free. Doing the upgrade from my copy of Win 7 to Win 10 went smoothly, with no issues whatsoever. After having upgraded, i noticed that my user folders, meaning Desktop, Documents, Picturesm Music etc. all where located on the C:drive (my SSD) where i installed windows. However, when using my windows 7 copy i did re-route the locations of those folder to my D:drive, my storage HDD. I decided to ree-route the locations of the folders again, but ended up with a strange issue. Instead of creating only one folder or shortcut on my desktop, now my pc now creates duplicated version of everything on the desktop. If i remove one of the duplicated folders/icons/shortcuts, then both the duplicate and the original dissapears. This is a very strange bug that i've never seen before and i could use some serious help.

I'm using Windows 10 Pro and my folders are not opening, everytime I install a new program, it auto atribute the folders to open with that program, but now it's stuck on "Search...", if I right-click and select open, it works fine. Other extensions are not affected, only the folders. What should I do? Edit: Now it's saying that there's no program associated to that extension, and I have to install a program that reads.

I have finally decided to organise all of my photos and videos. I currently have a 2TB external hard drive and it is dedicated to footage storage. Currently, I have a massive list of randomly named folders with random junk inside. I really need a file system for photos and videos so that they are organised and I can find anything when I want to. Does anyone have a solid, working files ystem that I could use?

At a computer repair shop that I work at we do both PC and Mac. For the Mac stuff we have these LaCie drives with all of the OSX versions in Bootable Partitions and Installer Partitions. Pretty straight forward. BUT! For some reason that we have not been able to narrow down, the Installer partitions for OSX 10.4, 10.10, and 10.11 open in finder windows whenever the drives are plugged in or when a system boots from them. The other partitions do not do this at all and we have not been able to narrow down what the cause is for these partitions. If anyone has overcome this annoyance or even has it themselves, it would be fantastic if you could let me know. Its definitely not a huge deal, but when I do this several times a day it gets very annoying. Attached is a photo of what I am seeing. The Finder windows that open are the stripped down ones that appear when doing something like viewing a package contents.
