Okay so bought my 3TB NAS Drive of Amazon and then mounted it into my PC. Pull up disk management and its already separated into 2 partitions. I go "That's strange.." Allocated the main 2TB space and have this un allocated space of 750+ GB just sitting there mocking me... Thx for reading.

Best 3TB drive with decent read and write speeds for under £100? Also what company has the lowest amount of drive failures of 3tb drives? I would like it from that company. I was looking at this one. EDIT: Added a poll. Also this will be used for a storage device, for media such as music, some steam games, videos and pictures. No operating system will be put on this drive.

Hello there, I recently purchased a new pc and everything is working fine, except for one thing. I'm using this hard drive. After assigning it to a volume this happens. (It's Dutch but I hope you guys understand it.) I don't get why I can't assign the other 746GB to a volume. Could someone help me out please? Edit: This is my set-up.

Alright so I am am trying to recover data off a WD30EZRX hard drive, I have one that has data and another which is supposed to be for parts. Mechanically I did some tests on the drives and the controller spins it up slows it down moves the arm sensor but the drive fails to be detected on several computers even when I swap out the controller board with the part drives board, they are both undetected regardless of controller board. Anyone know anything else to try? At this point I have tried everything I can think of but it still remains an enigma... I have tried these on Sata 1, 2 and 3, Amd and Intel systems and Sata to USB adapters...

I asked my cousin to bring his Seagate 3TB Internal HD if it could run on my UEFI system as he doesn't have the same. As soon as we plugged in and ran the Windows Disc Management it is detected as 3.86 GB Unallocated which is as weird as it gets (see the attached screenshot). Current Status - Creating GPT Partition (Taking forever) We tried using all the available Disc Management tools but none detected it (incl. SeaTools) Jumping into the RAID Configurator it shows that the drive is not functioning and ERROR NUMBER 7. While shaking the drive in hand it produces a screeching sound but not always. Are these the signs of Total Drive Failure ?? *Not under Warranty*

Hi LTT For a few years ago I bought a Seagate expansion 3TB which is super small and just runs on a usb 3.0 cabel to the computer. It's getting full so I bought another one, So I thought, I bought a Seagate Expansion 3TB which seems to be the 'desktop' version, Which is like 3 times the size and it looks like it have a power brick aswell (I haven't opened the box because I might return it because the other one is so small and this one is so big. What is the difference between these 2 ? They have the same price on the web

Hi I guys I'm in the market currently deciding on what portable hard disk should I get 2tb, 3tb or 4tb. I had wd my passport 1tb that lasted me about 5 6 years before getting dead and taking data with it.Though, I have that data but still it lasted me quite long. At that time I used to download lots of movies and games but now its different. I'm sure 1tb is not enough for me for sure. I need atleast 2tb, but need your suggestions wheater to bump it to 3tb or 4th or keep it at 2tb. The following is what I'm considering to get. data recovey Need Recommendations on Affordable Data Recovery
TheZorch posted a topic in Storage Devices
I'm looking for recommendations on a good data recovery service that won't cost an arm, a leg, a kidney, and a virgin sacrifice or two. It's a 3TB HGST internal SATA-III 7200rpm HDD. We can't get it to come up in either Windows or Linux (we were going to see if ddrescue could save the files). It is about 1/2 full, most of it is videos but there are some important project files on there too that we need (which "should" have been backed up!!!). We're in the United States. If you've got any recommendations, thank you in advance.- 5 replies

My brand new internal hdd worked for about a day when I began to get errors about not enough disk space from steam when installing games, so I restarted my pc and the drive disappeared, when I opened up disk management it says that the drive only has 3.86gb of storage and when I try to initialize it, it says "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error." I tried swapping out sata cables and using a different sata port but nothing has worked pls help.

So here's the story: Get new HDD for data storage (steam, movies, etc.), install it and first thing that happens is it won't show up in Windows device manager. BUT it did show up in the windows tool for creating new Storage Pools. I create a new Storage Pool and HDD shows up now, everything works.. for like 3 weeks. The first weird thing that happended was Steam being unable to write to the HDD. So I check it out and appearently the filesystem for the HDD randomly changed to RAW from NTFS. Further research gave hints about that Windows might have been the culprit, since the Storage Pool actually is based on an virtual disk (I might be wrong on this tho). SO I go into PowerShell and I remove the Storage Pool and the Virtual disk. Then I Re-partition the whole disk and then reformat it to NTFS. All data gone, but nothing that mattered. It shows up in Windows as expected again. So I reinstall my games and same thing happens after 3-4 game installs via Steam, unable to write to disk. So I thought now that Steam is the Culprit. I try install a game from Uplay and also there I get the same error - Unable to write to disk. I see a pattern now, so I assume it wasn't Steam. Next thing I do is clear the Disk from readonly attributes via the console, doesn't change a thing tho, still same errors. Now I am worried that the disk might actually be damaged so I do a 'Fix All Long' test via the Seagate Tool for their Hardware - let it finish over night. Next morning everything is OK. It passed and nothing bad in the LOG. SO now i know that the hardware is fine, no bad sectors. I check S.M.A.R.T too and everything seems fine? CHKDSK also returns no errors. One thing I haven't tried yet is changin the cables, but for that I would need to get a new one first. SO, does anyone have thoughts on this? I have never seen this kind of issue with any harddrive I have owned. I can also add that after some restarts I can write on the disk again but after a while the same error occus and I am unable to write or allocate anything again. Thanks in advance for any replies. I just bought a 3TB seagate new barracuda hard drive today. However when I tried to partition it, there is a 750GB part I cannot delete. Most of the time if I have 2 partitions in one HDD, I just merge them to one. Now I can't do it. Cos the 750GB partition is locked somehow. It is not a EFI partition I think. I even tried to use cmd to wipe off the whole drive, did it, did not work. It still shows me 2 partitions on it. Both of them unallocated. I can create a new simple volume on the 1st partition, no problem. Then the drive shows up as a 1.99TB drive. Did I just get a faulty HDD???? Here are the pics. They are pretty self explanatory.

Hello everybody. I really need some of your expertise, maybe even the mighty server guy - @LinusTech. So here's the deal. A few months ago I bought a Synology DS216se budget, honestly very bad, NAS. So I was wondering about buying a new one, DIY. Here's a list of the parts I chose: NZXT Tempest 210 - Case Xigmatek 600W - PSU, Chinese 2 x Unbranded 4GB RAM 3/4 x WD Red Zalman FX70 - Fanless cooler Intel Celeron G1840 Please feel free to recommend other hardware, but my real question comes here: I want to store lots of movies, TV Series, Backups and other files. What I really want to is have these in a non-redundant setup. What would be really cool, if these were seen as one big harddrive to the user, and if one the drives fail, the data on the HDD is lost, but the others untouched. This should be completely transparent to the user. Hope you can help. Thanks, Simon

Hi, In my pc I currently have: 1 120gb sdd for windows and programs. I rarely write to this drive mostly read. 1 1TB seagate hdd for documents, media and games. Writing to this drive happens more often as I like to edit video's. Now the problem is that my 1TB drive is almost full (50gb left) so I would like to add some storage. My first thought was to add an aditional 1TB drive and put them in RAID 0 for extra speed. But then I rememberd that that would increase my risk of losing data. So i came up with the plan to add an 3TB drive aswell. Then I could backup the RAID array and my ssd to that to reduce the risk of losing data. Now my question is, how would I go about doing the backup part, as I don't want it to take multiple hours everytime I want to backup my data? And is there possibly another, better, solution that wouldn't cost me a lot more money? Also, what 3TB drive would you recommend, I was thinking about a WD Green myself as it wouldn't be used very often and they are quite cheap. Rob As English is not my native language, I hope you can forgive me for any spelling mistakes that I have possibly made.

Basically, I have a 3TB WD Green HDD with a lot of my data on it, and I want to get a 2nd drive and make a RAID 1 in case of a HDD failure. But the drive is already in use, so is it possible to just add a drive and turn it into a RAID 1, or will I have to move all of the data off of the drive first? Thanks

I noticed unusually long load times while playing my games. Ran HDDscan3.3 smart scan and got this. Can anyone tell me what exactly is happening or at least how serious this is? My drive is a ST3000DM001-1CH166 Looking on google I am aware it's not a reputable drive, but all I really wanna know is if anyone believes it could fail tomorrow. To possibly make it easier the attributes flagged were the reallocation sector count, end to end error count, current pending errors count and uncorrectable errors count. Thanks in advance. Decent price on 4 3tb red drives. I believe it also comes with free shipping. Staples should price match this for those of you who will get faster shipping from them. http://www.frys.com/product/8351387?site=sa:adpages%20page:P7_SUN%20date:032915

My old Seagate 2Tb hard-drive seems to die now, as it is quite loud in comparison to my fans running at full speed. Also I need more capacity for more game-play footage and photos. Then it should be fairly quiet but nevertheless fast enough for recording and editing the footage. As I don't plan to waste money on a new HDD every year or so it should work for more than 3 years just fine. And it shouldn't exceed the price of 100€ too much. (~10€) I found those ones: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 3TB, SATA 6Gb/s 96,34 € Western Digital WD Desktop Everyday 3TB, SATA 6Gb/s, retail 108,90 € Which one should I buy? Or would you recommend something different? Please let me know!

i dont really know how to setup a HDD. just plug it in and format right? idk...but i went into disk manager and found this. http://gyazo.com/ff27fb18c08cfc16ddebfdca04166f0f when i create the new volume it only lets me use the 2tb partition the other 700gb can NOT be used, formatted, shrank, expanded etc. at all. (not to mention the 300gb absent in the first place if someone could explain that one to me) Is this normal? i paid for 3tb id like to be able to use it.
