  1. Hi i have a vmware installer that wont install and i get this error plz help
  2. Good morning LTT Forum Junkies I'm looking to downsize my current set of servers to one single server that can withstand some expandability (more VM's) and sata is a must. I would really like an atx form factor so I can build it as a desktop tower size (perhaps using an air 540 case). My server setup: Server 1 (vmware) HP Proliant DL320 G6 4 CPUs x 2.133Ghz E5606 Xeon Vmware Sphere 6 Processor sockets: 1 Cores Per: 4 2 nics 4 virtual Machines Currently 3 data stores ( I have drives to expand this but ran out of slots) 4tb currently all together Ram 20gb (15.5gb currently allocated) VMware is running from a 120gb samsung evo ssd. systems ran server 1 Server 2016 Domain Controller Windows 7 File Server/Murmur Server/Plex Server/Milestone VMS for security Cameras. Windows 7 vm of my old pc incase I need to go back and grab a file or run a program I had on that machine that is so rarely used I decided not to transfer it to the new. Random Linux playground Server 2 Free Nas 4 2tb drives zfs ( I have 3 more but ran out of slots) Build FreeNAS-9.10.2-U6 (561f0d7a1) Platform Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X3440 @ 2.53GHz Memory 16344MB System Time Thu Oct 12 10:25:09 CDT 2017 Uptime 10:25AM up 49 days, 15:53, 0 users Load Average 0.11, 0.34, 0.47 I'm looking to find one atx motherboard with say 12-16 cores 32gb of ram and enough sata ports to make the pope cry. Problem is I want to keep this down on a budget. I will sell these 2 servers once I get the new server up and going so that money can be rolled into the purchase price. It would be awesome if I could find a place that would buy these servers and sell me a driveless server with dual 3ghz or higher hexcore cpu's and 32gb of ram. I understand the freenas server is overkill on power but it was what was available to me and had the appropriate sata ports and slots at the time. Any suggestions or leads would be super helpful. I really want to keep the price down as much as possible. This is just a home server setup that I use to practice on and run plex and a murmur server for my gaming habit. Thanks LTTF!
  3. so, long story short, I moved a Windows XP VM from my old pc to a new one. The VM already had problems but I've established its probably not worth the time and effort of fixing them. My question is if I create a new VM, can I use the same windows disk and key to activate Windows XP with Microsoft either over the internet or via phone. the version is XP Professional if that matters.
  4. Hello everyone! Today I am writing this thread to ask everybody what I should do with two dell r710 servers. These servers are equipped with two Xeon E5-620 4 cores 8 threads a piece, 32GB of ram, and 2TB of storage each. I already have a hyper-visor loaded on one. Any ideas on how I can make money with these things? Another random thing I want to know is... Will my 4790k @ 4.6 be faster than dual E5-620's at 2.66?
  5. I think first off i need to sow you guyz my rig core I7 6700k g skillz tridentz ddr4 16gb memory (2x8) MSI gaming m5 (z179 A) GPU r9 280x corsair 650W psu this was an upgrade my old rig had 3 things different Cpu : Amd fx 8320 ram: kingston hyperx fury ddr3 (8x2) 16gb ram Now heres my problem I want to run a game (archeage) on 3 seperate instances i have been using Vmware as my primary virtualization software i recently heard about unraid iam baffled and confused i need to understand a lot of things so i will lay down questions (in red) and elaborate on the points that i want to know 1 How do Vms work ? i mean i have been running vmware since the start never tried any other software ever. now vmware is pretty straight forward and simple (as far as i have seen, coz i dont know about any advanced features it has if any ) so when am creating a vm in the hardware customization option i put in 4 cores and 8gb ram if am running 1 game on host and one on Vm when am running 2 VM + 1 Host i allot 2 cores and 4 gb ram (am i doing this right ?) can i allot all 8 cores and all the 16g ram to this vm( i really need to understand how hardware allotment on vmware works or any virtualization software for that matter) on my old AMD setup i tried to open 3 instances of the game i.e 2 instances on 2 vms and 1 instance on host the whole thing is stable at 2 VMs as i start up that third vm the whole pc starts lagging now the new skylake setup is stable even on three instances of game running ( i.e if i turn down the settings to the lowest on all three instances Q1 Tl;DR : plz explain how vms work and how hardware allotment to each vm works. 2 What are other virtualization softwares that i can hop on to for this purpose? 3 What is unraid ? can i setup unraid the same way i use VMware? 4 what upgrades do i need to perform on this rig to get upto 5 vms? i was thinking about going for a dual r9 nano ( will definitely upgrade the Psu to 850 W) current OS win 8.1 p.s i dont know if am coming out as stupid or condescending so sorry in advance if am being rude ( i cant really translate tone into words)
  6. So, I've been working on a project for the last few months and i Hoped i could get a feedback here! I've started this idea after i spent more than 3000 bucks on my new work-station which, after the introduction of the 5th generation of intel's processors it immediatly became outdated. But this is tech world right? Now, imagine spending 300 bucks instead of 3000 for a computer withouth making compromises, imagine just spending those money for a Raspberry Pi-like computer and being able to drive adobe premiere pro, playing the latest games with the highest settings. It's impossible you would say. This is where TLS '' Thin laptop System'' comes in. You are paying just for a thin client like laptop, with no fancy graphics card or ultra fancy ssd. All the hardwork is being done on a remote server, which hadware is constantly monitored and updated. You can render high-ASS 4k videos in a bar, on your laptop, with the same files you have at home. It could be even more effective if seen as an ecosystem. But let's stop the advertising for this moment. I want to know what you think, don't come and say ''it is impossible bla bla bla'' i just want to understand right now which could be the target for this kind of stuff. And of course i want to understand your opinion about this! I've just started the setup, I will keep you updated. UPDATE 1! I currently have two dl380 g8 with the following configuration: -Dual Intel Xeon E5-2690 8 core -64 GB of DDR3 RAM -Nvidia 1 GRID K2 (to get) -2x 750 Redundant Power Supply -2x 10gbps Fiber Card For the storage i am using: -MSA2000 + 2x P2000 g3 SAN controller -2x Sata Array -24x 1TB WD Black -SSD for boot. UPDATE 2 - GRID K2 ARRIVED! The new card just arrived, it was a pretty easy installation i must say, plug the card, tweak bios, install vbi, and you are pretty much done! The streaming quality improved a LOTTTT Finally i was able to stream games at 1080p at 60 fps without any problem! I've run Uniengine Heaven benchmark and the results aren't that bad! ULTRA SETTING - MSAA x2 1080p - I've configured the vm to the the highest preset: the 280q with a full access to the processor and 4GB of vram. The stream was pretty smooth and it was using just 10mbps of bandwidth! The compression of the stream through the card is really impressive. I guess that 3000 bucks are worth something. Screenshot:
  7. Hey guys, On and off for a lot of the summer, I have tried to dual boot yosemite alongside windows on my laptop, so I could use osx for youtube and stuff, and windows for more intensive things, however I have been unsuccessful thus far due to a number of reasons... This lead me to the idea of running osx on a virtual machine. My question is what would be the best program to use for the task, and weather it would be a viable option to use osx on a vm as a "daily" (as in how much would battery life suffer, would it be laggy/ slow?) I have used yosemite on vmware before, however it was pretty sluggish, and animations were not the smoothest. is that specific to vmware, or does no virtualization software give a smooth experience?
  8. Watching Linus's video on RAM speed: http://youtu.be/dWgzA2C61z4 It made me think about RAM and Virtualization. After googling a bit I could not find anything about non-ECC DDR3 RAM. So what do you guys think: What latency and frequency is recommended for Virtualization (VMware workstation, Virtualbox etc.) ?
  9. Hey guys, I am setting up Parallels 9, and I am wondering if it is bad to use the Windows from Boot Camp. I read from somewhere ( a long time ago) that letting Parallels access Boot Camp is bad because it may mess up the partition, the Windows files, or something, and will in general complicate things and cause problems. Any info is accepted!!
  10. I am a student in college (not a very good one, thus why I'm here asking for help) and I will eventually be in classes where I will need VMware, but that is at least a couple of years out. Currently, I have no experience using virtual machines, but I'm in some development classes that I believe would be improved if I could host XAMPP locally in order to test my php/perl scripting without having to upload it to the student server (which is time consuming during scripting/debugging), so I've concluded that it would probably be best to set up virtual machine capabilities in order to install XAMPP (on Linux, in a VM). I don't have any experience doing any of this, but I think I can figure it out. What I'm wanting to know is which Virtual Machine software suite is most similar to VMware, but FREE, since I really need to learn VMware, but I can't afford it currently (even with the student discount). I don't want to learn a program that will make learning VMware more difficult due to the need to "unlearn" things that operate completely differently, so I'm trying to get whatever free VM software is the closest to VMware in usability/UI. What would serve my needs best? Virtual Box? Hyper-V? Something else? I'd like to stress that I have zero experience with any of this, and I'm just going by what I could find using google search. Am I over-complicating this? I tend to do that. To be clear: I'd like to be able to run php and perl locally on my PC (Windows 10, 64 bit) so that I do not have to upload my webpages that include server-side scripting to the server to see if they work because it is very time-consuming.
  11. So I was very inspired by Linus's video where he built a "Server" but VM'ed a Streaming PC, and Gaming PC. So I'm reaching out the community to see if there has been anymore discussion on the build, and how viable it is. Also would this build be better with the new Thread ripper for the sheer additional about of cores to allocate? Or is Intel really the only way to go? Lastly I really think I want to make this my next build but would like to see you all think. Thanks!

    VMWare help

Hello there, I was playing around in VMWare workstation pro 12. Then I had to turn off my virtual machine and now it wont even boot. I never touched any setting which have anything with this to do, and all the posts I can find online with this problem is people who want to upgrade to windows 10, and I've had windows 10 working without any problems... bear in mind this is on my Laptop not on my primary dekstop, Thank you
  13. I want to transfer my OSX Guest OS to an actual hard drive and put it in a mac I have, is there a way to convert the VMDK file to an IMG file?
  14. So i want to connect my VM to internet using NAT. i know it is possible with something like bridged but i want to do it in NAT for reasons. when i tried by simply selecting the NAT option shown in the screenshot it does not connect. i tried to ping my router and i get host unreachable error with my static IP. VM ware NAT service also seem to be working fine in the host machine. what else should i check in order to get this working. I have this VM setup in another PC and in that it works fine by simply selecting that NAT option.
  15. Apparently, the story here is that Dell wants to go public again and they have found a possible unique solution. Source: https://www.engadget.com/2018/01/29/dell-may-sell-itself-to-vmware/
  16. Hello LTT community I have some interesting new to share with the tech community and what better place to share it than here. I have been doing a lot of research on hypervisors and specifically GPU pass through to virtual machines, in my research i have found a number of skeptical and contradictory articles and posts. I plan to discuss and share my findings, first off ill list my system specs, installation of esxi 6.0.0 (aka vsphere), the creation of my windows vm, pci passthrough and finally gaming and benchmarks ( graphs to come in the future) The System: Bequiet Silent Base 800 Asus x99 deluxe Intel I7 5930K (OC'd to 4.1GHz) esxi stability is important so im not pushing it. Kingston fury x 16gb 4x4 2133mhz kit (upgrading to 32gb 4gbx8 2666 gskill kit) Bequiet Dark Rock Pro 2 Cpu cooler ( minor case mod to fit, one of the tabs on the side panel fan cover had to be cut down) EVGA GTX 970 SSC (for pass thru) PNY GTX 750ti (for esxi since the x99 platform has no igpu) Corsair HX 850i 850w platinum powersupply samsung ssd's; 256gb 950 pro for VM's and 250gb 850 evo for storage and a few other drives not configured in vmware yet Other components include an APC 1500va UPS for good measure ok now on to the installation, I started by downloading the free version of esxi the fired up vmware workstation to create a USB image of esxi so i didnt eat up my valuable drives instructions i followed are here http://www.vladan.fr/install-esxi-6-to-usb-as-destination-or-have-it-as-source/ once that was create i installed the usb in an nzxt internal usb extension that also has 2 usb "A" ports fire up the PC and mash F8 to get boot devices and pick the esxi usb next go to the address esxi gives you as there is no gui so your gonna need a laptop or a second computer to configure esxi from the web gui is how you configure esxi for pci pass thru and create your vm First you have to create a data store, i called mine VM's and Games as the evo would be attached to the vm as a secondary vdisk just for games click on storage, click create new data store and follow the steps and add the drives you want now click on virtual machines, click create virtual machine, the nice part about creating a vm with esxi is you have the ability to use the client machine as the CD/DVD drive so you can mount and install images from a laptop remotely my vm is using 8gb of ram and running on 4 virtual cores and as a side note use vmxnet3 for your network as e1000 and e1000e have issues getting to the internet once your virtual machine is up and running with Windows 10, (im using build 1607 for my vm) shut down your vm now we will add pci devices click on manage right under host then click the hardware tab, note that not all devices can be passed thru, on the devices that say disabled you can check the box and click toggle passthrough and that device will be unavailable to the host and now be available to add to your virtual machines. once youve toggled all the devices you want you will have to reboot the host before the devices will be passed through Once the host is back up and before you start your vm, click on virtual machines and click on your vm, click edit and add other device, select the pci devies you wish to add to your vm the click save now before you boot up you vm and this is IMPORTANT if you OWN an NVIDIA Consumer GPU (GEFORCE CARDS) you will have to edit the config file and add 2 lines. to get to the config click virtual machines, click the machine you want to edit, click edit settings, click the VM options tab, click advanced and scroll down and click edit configuration now that the config is open click add parameter and in the KEY: hypervisior.cpuid.v0 Value: FALSE and the second parameter is KEY: pciHole.start Value: 2048 not that in the first parameter that is a ZERO after the "v" Now your ready to start your VM fingers crossed you have an output on your display and your gpu passthrough is working correctly once your back into your vm you will need to download and install nvidia drivers and in device manager uninstall and delete the SVGA adapter. Now running games is to my eye showing now loss, i have yet to notice any frame rate dips Playing the Division i was getting between 35 and 45 fps on ultra @ 1440P and on a base windows install i was getting the same, i will however post some benchmarks of my vm and try to get some benchmarks of the pc running these games on windows on the baremetal if you have any questions dont hesitate to comment or PM me Thanks
  17. Sup! So my cousin wants MAC OS ( Whatever the latest version is) on his computer, He wants to use Garageband and some of the Apple media production programs. I than downloaded VMWARE on his BEAST system. (Click here) and tried to get Mac OS onto the program, The issue is, I don't have a MAC computer or any Apple computer.. All the review guides on Hackintosh say you need to use a Macbook or whatever and rip the OS off of them.. Any help..? I just need the ISO for the O.S. so I can just put it onto VMWARE. He has his BIOS setup and everything is fine on the hardware and software side I believe.. P.S. He now has GTX 980 Classified Edition now, Not his AMD card.
  18. If this already exists - could we get it stickied? Curious what everyone is running out there, much how there's a 10TB+ NAS thread maybe we can start (and get stickied) a home servers thread? Just a generalized overview of what you have at home. I'm at work and when I get home I'll get a little more detailed about my own. Ideally I'd like to come up with a format for information - or maybe bum off of the NAS thread.. Really not sure how to go about this but very curious about people's @home setups, which I think is part of the curiosity/interest in the NAS thread. 1x Dell C1100 ($400 came with a 3TB green and the below) 2x 5520, 32gb DDR3 ECC, 1x 500gb SSD, quad-port nic OS: ESXI 5.5 (flash drive) VMs: vCenter 5.5 (Windows 2012r2), Domain Controller, vmware Horizon 6, Exchange 2013, SQL 2014, and a "closed" network where I'm testing sophos UTM / arch linux / unRaid (bitch to deal with as a vm) 1x IBM x3650 m2 ($230 came with a single 146gb 15k SAS drive and the below) 2x 5520, 32gb DDR3 ECC - no drives, using ISCSI targets OS: Will be ESXI 5.5 - just got this server :-) might try out Linux KVM / proxmox 1x Custom Built (~$1500 so far I think) 1x G1610, 32gb DDR3 ECC, 5x 4TB Seagate Desktop drives, 4x 3TB WD Red, 1x 160gb Intel SSD OS: FreeNAS 9.3 - Currently only using a CIFS share and 2 iSCSI targets, no jails or VMs. Raid: m1015 flashed in IT | 5x 4TB - RaidZ1 "Primary" pool, 4x 3TB Raidz2 "Backup" pool. - data is replicated from Primary to Backup nightly (only very important things)
  19. I have an intel skylake core I5 6400 @ 2.70GHZ Quad Core, GTX 960 2GB, GT 740 2GB, ASrock Z170 Pro4. I would like to dedicate my GT 740 2GB to a Windows 10 VM so I can game on it whilst leaving my 960 on the host. Please can someone help, my mouse and keyboard work on the VM and are dedicated but I need the GT 740 to be dedicated to the VM. The second display is connected to my 960 and I would like to get the VM to use the 740 to do the hard work. Thanks in advance -Jadi
  20. Hey Everyone Ive been interested in setting up a domain for my home (Just for shits and giggles) I have successfully set it up on a stand alone box and worked great. I wanted to try to run it on a VM and when ever i try to add a computer to the domain it says it cant reach it. I have no clue why it cant reach it. The Networks setting are set to NAT in VMWARE. Any Ideas?
  21. Hello, I'm looking for a new SSD to use with VMware Workstation. (running 4 to 6 VM simultaneously) Looking around i have stumbled upon the Chronos Deluxe 9mm series SSD from mushkin. Specifically this model : http://poweredbymushkin.com/index.php/component/djcatalog2/item?id=659:chronos-deluxe-240gb&cid=9:chronos-deluxe I think it has a decent price/quality/speed value. So what do you guys think ? Also .. if anyone has experience with 15k or 10k SAS HDD how are they compared to latest SATA SSD ? p.s. this is my first topic.
  22. Budget: US$1500 (estimate) Location: Japan, all items will be bought from amazon.co.jp Aim/Purpose: Virtualization Lab (XenServer and/or ESXI as Hypervisor/OS on HDD), Gaming, Overclocking just for fun Monitors: 1 display @1920x1080 Misc constraints: 1 SDD for windows HDD not required, have a spare lying around cd/dvd/bd drive not required monitor not required peripherals not required must be small (mini-itx), should fit on check-in luggage must be quiet GPU will be bought separately on different time Air Cooled small psu size, reference size is corsair cx series will not use node 304 fan controller, all PWM The Build: CPU: Intel Haswell i5-4670K Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO MOBO: Gigabyte Z87N-WIFI Mini-ITX RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2x8) DDR3-1600 PSU: Corsair CX600M 80+ Bronze Semi Modular SSD: Samsung 840 120GB Case: Fractal Design Node 304 Case Fans: 2x Gelid Silent 80mm PWM for intake, 1x Gelid Silent 140mm PWM for exhaust and some PWM splitter cables. GPU: Asus DirectCU GTX770 *not priority, will wait on AMD 9XXXX. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1rKq3 Some of other brands/products are not available in this country so I am kinda stuck on these brands I chose. Question 1: Is it okay to use pwm splitter to an exhaust and a cpu fan? Question 2: Should I dedicate a fan header to cpu fan? Question 3: What really is the difference between system fan header and cpu fan header? Do they detect same temps? or System for case temp and cpu on cpu temps only Question 4: If you are doing this build for same purpose, what would you name it? I am very open on critics, suggestions and questions too. I know that colors will not pair good. Okay, what would I play? For now SimCity(don't laugh), probably BF4 and good games on the future. Priority is Virtual lab.
  23. Hello, We have to design and build a network at college. We have to connect a DHCP (and DNS) server to our LAN (which consists of 3 switches and 3 VLANs which are active on all the switches through VTP). The problem is that we have 3 virtual network cards (bridged), but we only have 1 physical link for them. Since they are in 3 different subnets (1 for each VLAN), and a physical switch port can only be assigned to 1 VLAN, we are not sure if this is even possible. It would be a pretty obvious situation if we just had a server machine with 3 physical network cards. Then we could just use 3 cables and put each of them in separate VLANs. We are running an Ubuntu machine on VMWare Player.
  24. Hi, I am planning on building a virtualization lab rig that somehow will also be a gaming rig but that is not the priority. I want to know which is superior when it comes to virtualization. Thanks!
  25. I am confused about whether or not this cpu can support vmware with a fully functional OS like Linux running in windows. Does anyone have this type of setup?
