I have a Thermaltake TR2-430 Watt PSU, and the other day, during light load the entire pc shut off instantly. No BSOD, nothing, straight to black. I turned it back on, and there was a bright orange flash that came from the direction of the PSU. However, before I shut it off, it still was delivering power to the PC. I gave it a while to cool down (It smelled a bit like burning), turned it back on, and sure enough, it worked just fine. Kept using it, and nothing happened. No shut offs, no flashes, no burning smell. Everything worked fine. So, what happened? My best guess is a bit of dust (There was about 1 months worth of dust build up in a not so well ventilated case) ignited in the PSU, but I don't know for sure. Does anybody know what caused it? Is it safe to keep using? Will it happen again? Thanks in advance

This PC was my fathers who passed in 2013. I have no idea what brand/wattage this PSU is as it is completely powder coated with no info on it. I’m looking to get a modular power supply to remove some of the clutter of extra wires as I no longer use external drives at all. System Specs: i7 - 9700k 5.0ghz over clock at 1.35v (possible 9900k upgrade) MSI 2070Super Ventus OC (Upgrading to 3080 or 6800x let the Newegg gods bless me) **this is not currently water cooled but will be water cooled on GPU Upgrade** 4x 8GB 3600 c16 Corsair Vengeance DDR4 Memory 2x Samsung 1tb NVME 970 EVO 1x Samsung 2tb NVME 970 EVO 2x 6 fan radiators (3x on each side) 1x 2 fan radiator (1x on each side) Double reservoir dual pump 7 standard fans 1x Standard optical drive(90% of time unplugged) (Yes it’s a B*tch to clean) the case is but enough to fit any size PSU, it’s a complete custom built so no reference but kinda pic provided from what’s in camera roll.don’t judge blank walls they have stuff now.

Budget (including currency): for PSU approx $200 Country: Canada Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Workstation, data management and research, light gaming (Divinity Original Sin 2 and such - things not on PS4) Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I included my parts list below but I am only looking for advice on the PSU right now. The rest I have already. I know it seems a little excessive so no one needs to point that out lol but my goal was to only upgrade parts if it was something that would last me for a very long time and I got a few things on sale the last little while so it seemed as good a time as any to finish up. I'm looking to pick it up quite soon My question is would a Corsair RM850x or ASUS ROG Strix 750w be a better choice? I don't need the extra power (750 is plenty) but they are similar prices right now (one local, one on Newegg) so I'm not sure. Reviews seem comprable but I feel like I might be missing something *My current PSU is working fine but missing the additional 4 pin ATX TLDR: PSU question only you don't have to like the rest of my build choices and, while I appreciate the concern, I don't have the energy to explain them all here as it is not relevant to the question. Be assured they are all carefully considered (prices just come from PCPartpicker with the embedded table and have no link to my purchases). I have a Gigabyte Z390 AORUS PRO WIFI motherboard and a newly replaced as of today Corsair RM750 power supply (last one failed). After connecting everything back up and flipping the switch, the motherboard lights flash and I hear a short buzz while they are on. Any ideas? I'm hoping to not have to take the entire thing apart and have to send in my motherboard. Any ideas? EDIT: I should mention that I originally built it over Thanksgiving weekend (2020) and haven't had any issues before this string of them. Prior to this error and before I replaced the power supply due to the system not booting, my USB drives started to fail on my motherboard. The red USB 3.1 ports lasted the longest, but they eventually went as well. I assumed the problems were related. 20210401_193030_Trim.mp4

Motherboard and/or PSU Problems
Black_Chair_N_Socks posted a topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
So I have a custom built and have been using it for a few months. The last few times I've unplugged it to add parts or clean the area I've seen a flash of light and heard a sound that I thought might be electrical buzzing. When I unplug the computer I: 1. Shutdown the computer. 2. Flip the PSU power switch. 3. Unplug the power cable from the PSU. Whenever I turn it back on I just do the reverse; plugging the power cable into the PSU and then switching the power switch. After hitting the switch the RGB on my board and CPU fan flash for a moment, then go off. None of the fans activate, just RGB. I ended up taking the motherboard out of the case and shorting the power switch rods and the computer turned on, but it wouldn't boot to my SSD boot drive. I could see all drives I had attached under my I/O connections in the Bios, but couldn't boot to them. The contents of my SSD drive were still there so I just back it up and reinstalled windows. My current issue is that I: 1. Can't turn my computer on via the case power button after putting it back in the case. 2. I don't trust the power supply since the problem started presumably with it. I have protection on the PSU and can claim it to get another, but I'm not sure how to test it besides shorting the 4th and 5th pin (which worked, the fan moved and stopped since the PSU has a zero spin feature). Is it maybe possible the cable for the power button got fried if the PSU was acting up? I also have protection on the case (I thought the glass on it would break first, definitely worth now). It's also really concerning my SSD still had the OS and everything on it, but wasn't seen as a bootable drive. The SSD seems to be functioning fine as of right now though. When the motherboard was out of the case I noticed I have RGB lights on the back of my motherboard and since they also flash when I turn on the PSU that could have been the flash I noticed when it was inside the case. The RGB on the board flashes one 1 color, but it's different sometimes and I've seen it be just white. That's probably what I saw through the case's I/O slots and hopefully not flashes of electricity. I also didn't notice any burns on the motherboard, but please let me know if there are any specific spots I should give a check closely. I especially want some advice on how to test the power supply. I don't have any electrical test tools or another Mobo to swap out. I'm open to some affordable tool suggestions and obviously the cheapest way to solve this issue is to make sure I don't fry my system, so please throw your suggestions at me. So I have a couple games crashing on me, sometimes during heavy load, sometimes when simply doing an install or while just idling. (ARK, Valorant, Sea of Thieves, Apex Legends etc.) I reached out to some of my community members and friends and there seems to be a consensus that it wasn't just the games that's acting up but also the PC itself which was built 7 years ago. I agree. However some of them said it could be a bad power supply. This baffled me. how can a power supply, that carries no data and only supplies pure voltage to the components cause games to crash? Is there such a thing? Granted it is a locally sourced part that came with my v. cheap case and it isn't exactly rated nicely or anything. But I can't wrap my head around how a psu can affect software. Can anyone shed some light on this?

My Computer is not turning on, this was happening before but it was fixed by me pressing the hybrid mode feature on the back of the psu but today even if turn and turn off hybrid mode my computer isn't starting. I hear a click ( guessing from the power supply ), but the pc doesnt start. Any idea what this could be? Update // I plugged in my monitor aswell and its not working, I'm guessing this has to do with my power outlets inside my house; but I'm not sure as ive tried multiple power outlets My phone charger is working with the outlets though Update // Pc turned on, This is happening every morning and it randomly decides to fix itself after a while.

so I'm doing this build but the problem is I can't understand the concept of cpu and gpu cables the psu Im building this pc with is corsair RM850x a total of 5, 8 pin slots, ( 6+2 pcie and 4+4 cpu , This labelled on the unit ) Ive read and watched lots of guides on this, you should not connect pcie 8 pin connector to cpu socket or vice versa, right ? so how come you connect these cables in the same 8 pin slot on the psu? I mean aren't they provide the same amount of voltage to the cable? whats the difference and why you shouldn't connect pcie to cpu socket if the source of the all the pcie or cpu cables are those 8 pin slots on the psu?

Hi, i am using HP z800 with power supply of "delta electronics dps-1050db a". i have few questions and issues, please help me to figure out. I am living in Pakistan and having electricity breakout issues, so i install a 1000VA UPS with 180AMP battery and it supplies to my PC (HP Z800) and 2 ceiling fans and 6 ceiling lights (6 watts each). i noticed, when the electricity breakout happens, UPS tripped down with a beep and break it's supply too. and when i restart the UPS, it gives supply by sourcing of installed battery and run smoothly on battery till the main electricity comes back. I notices one more thing, when i manually switch of the main breaker, the UPS convert itself to battery mode smoothly and never cutoff it's connection, it's only happened when electricity breakout through main power grid. First question is why it's happening there? Second, i heard from someone that the computer supply (HP z800) is taking too load about 1250watts, then how it run on UPS battery when i direct connect it ( without fans and ceiling lights ) even during electric breakout.? and i read on UPS screen, it's taking only 178W during computer running. Thanks in Advance

So when i load up something heavy like warzone the computer screen goes black and resets. No blue screen and as if i turned it off myself. However i found out with my RX 5700xt when i undervolt the gpu the crashes dont happen this puts a cap of voltage 1150mV when before 1200mV would be the max it would go and around when the crashes start. This below is the psu i had, wondering if this can have a factor. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/thermaltake-smart-700w-atx-80-plus-power-supply-black/6339087.p?skuId=6339087 These below are ones that i have found. Are any of these 3 good or have any to reccomend. I know best buy isnt ideal when computer parting but i want to stick to it outta of convenience for pickup so if you recommend send me one with fast shipping or at best buy. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/msi-mpg-a750gf-750w-atx-80-plus-gold-psu-power-supply-black/6447783.p?skuId=6447783 https://www.bestbuy.com/site/corsair-rm-series-750w-atx12v-2-52-eps12v-2-92-80-plus-gold-modular-power-supply-black/6356248.p?skuId=6356248 https://www.bestbuy.com/site/evga-br-series-700w-atx12v-eps12v-80-plus-power-supply-dc-dc-technology-black/6346160.p?skuId=6346160

My PC was functioning properly up untill 2 months ago. I believe the first crash was during a game of warzone where my PC completely shut off and started a reboot. Since than I would have several hours of play sessions to no issue than a random restart, which is usually followed by several consecutive ones. Some crashes result in the system trying to power cycle but can't and the lights start to flicker. Once my system runs for several minutes with no crashing it will tend to run for hours maxed out with no issues. My first thought is my power supply may be faulty. Any thoughts?
