Hi- hoping the community can help me figure out a reasonable 1 CPU, multiple user system. Target use is as for a computer learning lab. Rough outline of hardware I'm looking for, and uses: - 6, but preferably 8 student seats - PCIe Passthrough to mid level AMD, or possibly NVidia GPUs - to be used for programming, lego & vex robotics, WebGL (online CAD/CAM software, eg TinkerCAD), CAD (fusion 360) - VMs will typically be Windows 10 home, but also Linux, FreeBSD - will probably use ESXi, but possibly Unraid (but I've had bad luck with USB sticks failing as boot drives, so that aspect makes me nervous.) Goals are: - reduced IT management (snapshots are easier to manage than multiple desktops...) - flexible CPU resources (eg 1 VM with all resources, or 8 with 1/8th...) - hardware cost savings (I know, they won't be huge to start with, but over several years I think there will be. E.g. even one extra stick of RAM benefits everyone.) I'm reasonably experienced with computer architecture, OS installation, etc. Right now I use a lower end i7, 3 GPUs, Linux, XNest, and lots of USB 2 ports to power an up-to 10 seat system that can handle Minecraft & TinkerCAD, Python, etc. Unfortunately I can't get some things to work with Wine. I just don't have the bandwidth to keep up/figure out all the (poorly) documented nuances of PCI passthrough, eg ACS support. Right now I'm looking at this MoBo: https://www.asus.com/ca-en/Motherboards/X99E_WSUSB_31/ And pairing it with the best Xeon E5 I can afford, to get the most PCIe lanes. I believe this combo will provide true ACS isolation for all 7 PCIe slots, allowing a 1 CPU, 7 student setup. (I'm not interested in ACS override patches- tried that in an older system, got random weird behaviour after some hours, will be multiplying that potential several fold.) But there's been a few CPU and hardware announcements lately ;-) So question time- Is this going to have the ACS isolation I'm looking for? Is there a better MoBo/CPU combo I should be looking at? I'm not against dual CPU boards, but would probably have to start with Xeon E3s. My understanding is they don't have the same ACS isolation- so that might not work. Or populate one CPU socket with an E5. But my understanding is that can mess up the PCIe map/access as well- maybe not all PCIe sockets would be active? Suggestions appreciated! Also for Canadian suppliers; the ones I've checked all have 4-8+wk lead times on that motherboard. Thanks!

I recently got a razer blackwidow for christmas. It has both headphone jack and usb passthrough. The back of my motherboard has three audio jacks, blue. green, and pink. Which should I plug the keyboard passthrough jack into?

I often find that the documentation on this subject either leaves a bit to be desired, doesn't emphasize some really important aspects, or is just downright hard to follow at times. Because of this, I wrote my own tutorial that primarily sources personal experience on the topic in an effort to drastically improve the available documentation on the subject (in a sort-of verbose nature). One of the goals of the tutorial is to show the reader examples and explain why things are being done so that the reader comes away from the tutorial with a better understanding of how PCI-e passthrough works overall. Feedback is highly encouraged! Submit an issue or pull request if you think the tutorial needs further improvement. I'm also open to suggestions of any kind. https://clayfreeman.github.io/gpu-passthrough/

After talking about my upcoming new PC build a friend told me that Intels Virtualization technology (Vt-d / Vt-X) is way faster than AMDs (V / Vi), and that if I want to pass a PCIe device through to a virtual Win10 guest system, I would get a hefty performance penalty on AMD because their Ryzens are not designed to directly access/control IOMMU groups and that I HAVE to get an Intel system to avoid those problems. There were some numbers during the conversation, ranging between "about 90% of possible fps on AMD, maybe less" and "at least 30% performance loss on AMD". Though I find one forum post on tomshardware with the "best answer" claiming Intel is "better" with IOMMU, I can't find any reliable data on that topic, especially if it comes to PCI-passthrough. I never heard about any noticable performance differences between team Red and team Blue regarding virtualization myself, which is why I planed to go for a Ryzen 7 / X570 based system on Arch Linux, including a Win10 guest system with a 5700 XT passed through for games. Hope you can help me out here, I really don't want to buy unsuitable hardware.

Hi, I need some help passing my gpu to my windows vm. I'm using Arch Linux with the latest kernel and the following gpus: GTX 1080 (which is placed in the first pcie slot to get x16, so it is used as boot gpu) GTX 1050 Ti (which is placed in the second last slot and only gets x8) IOMMU is supported by all devices, the gpus are in different iommu groups and I don't have an iGPU I want to passthough the 1080 to my qemu vm and use the 1050 Ti for the host system (maybe it's even possible to use it as boot gpu?) Is there someone who can help me getting there? If I forgot some information feel free to ask.

is there a small audio mixer that can take 2 inputs (one 3.5mm + one 3.5mm or SPDIF optical) and has at least one (preferably two) 3.5mm outputs for the mixed sound, but also has a 3.5mm output as a direct passthrough for at least 1 of the original sources? If anyone has ever seen anything like this or has used anything like this it would be helpful. Thanks! ?

Hey folks, I'm having a bit of an issue with my server and where could be a better place to ask for help than here? :D So after having seen all of the X-Gamers 1-CPU videos I thought I might try aswell... A bit of backstory: I happen to have an HP-DL580 gen 7 idling around with an installation of xcp-ng (a free version of XEN) I hosted multiple VMs at Haxogreen (local hacker event) and it did it's job pretty well. So I wanted to use this as base for my test to play with two people on one machine. I used XCPs GPU-Passthrough to hand two cards to two VMs (Gtx 550 Ti and Quadro K420) I know these aren't baller GPUs but I wanted to see if it works first. Well: It doesn't Windows recognizes the cards, driver installs but on restart "Error 43" Google tells me this is because NVIDIA drivers refuse to load if they detect they are running in a virtualized environment. I found some solutions for unRaid like disabling Hyper-V or even patching the driver. Other solutions include spoofing the hv_vendor_id for kvm. Does anybody knnow how to do something like this in XCP/XEN? Ideally without installing another host system? Thanks in advance, Mathew_96

So this is just a curiosity thing as well as maybe saving another cable being ran but does anyone know if it is possible to connect a bell tv box to a router that is connected to the box the tv box connects to. So instead of it being directly connected it passes through the router. This is both a curiosity thing as well as a potentially practical thing in my next upgrade. Maybe it is not possible for it to pass through, sofar I have the main network connection coming in ET0 , Main network going out on ET1 and another network on ET2 that only goes to the TV box. Is it possible for this to work?

Hello everyone, I have some trouble getting PCIe passthrough to work properly on my Proxmox VE 6.2-4. The curent setup I have contains 2 GPUs: - GTX 1070 mini in prmary (top) slot - GTX 770 in secondary slot Passing through PCIe devices works. I have confirmed this by passing through the GTX 770 to a Windows 10 VM which works as expected. My issue is that, when trying to pass through the primary slot GPU, the GTX 1070 in this case, I get no output and the device is not recognized by the VM in the devices manager. Drivers are blacklisted and both cards are configured to use vfio. My current guess is that, since proxmox uses the primary slot for local output prior to the VM being launched, proxmox essentially blocks the device from being able to be passed through. Any ideas on how to pass through the primary slotted GPU would be appreciated as I plan to upgrade to an nVidia 3000 Series card soon and would like to take advantage of PCIe 4.0, which is only available on the primary slot of my Mainborad. Kind regards, PacDDrake

I'm thinking of passing through a PCIe card in a future freenas/unraid setup. Does amd deliberately kneecap cards and prevent non-workstation/server cards from working in VMs, like Nvidia's infamous error 43?

So, I've got an amazing PC, three consoles, and some spare PCIe slots. I'm looking to get a capture card to use as a passthrough, in order to play my consoles through my PC. Using a separate input on my monitor is not an option, so id like some tips. Anyone know a capture card with 2 or 3 HDMI inputs? Also, what software should I use to display the input from the capture card in both a full screen mode, and a windowed mode?

Happy 4th of July everyone! Im currently running a AT&T modem/router combo and wanted to set up my own NetGear router for bridged mode. Unfortunately, AT&T only has something called "IP Passthrough" which I've enabled and I'm able to obtain internet through my net gear router. I've discovered today that port forwarding on the NetGear router is not working, even though i have port forwarded the proper ports, the ports are still showing up as closed. Am I missing an additional step thats needed here? Also as a side note, I've been able to port forward on the NetGear before when I used my own modem. I also tried AT&Ts own port forwarding system but that didn't seem to work either.

Me and my fiancee need to split my main computer in two so we can both game on it. I have a SuperMicro server motherboard with 2 CPUs and 22GB of ram. i currently have a GTX 970 and we were looking into buying a cheap Ati HD 5850 1G D5 to use for a VM for her. I can't buy Unraid at the moment so: Can i use Linux to make 2 windows VM's and make Linux use the intel APU? - if not, are there alternatives to Unraid Server that i can use? I've been searching for a while but i can't find anything that helps.. Thanks in advance!

Hi all, I might sound like I don’t how to google stuff like this but that’s the case here. I spent hours doing my research and still can’t figure out the best setup. Threadripper 1950x or i9 7900x? Ryzen 7 1700x\1800x or i7 8700k? Motherboards is just whole nother story. Full linux compatibility / decent iommu groups. I’m lost guys. I’m looking for a good “under $4000” Machine learning / passthrough / gaming setup (gaming is least important). Thanks

I'm putting together a computer for flashing firmware via USB onto some custom hardware I'm manufacturing. Unfortunately, the flashing software will only run on windows XP, and I can only flash one board at a time with it, but otherwise it takes only a tiny bit of memory and processing. To solve this, I'm considering this build: SuperMicro SYS-5019A-FTN4 : https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA5EM67J7117 1x Hynix 8GB DDR4-2400 ECC UDIMM : https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA5EM62K8176 (validated) 1x Samsung SM961 128GB NVMe SSD : https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA5EM5Z40944 (validated) 1x SuperMicro PCIe x8 riser : https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA5EM2JS8113 1x StarTech 4-port Quad Bus PCIe USB 3.0 Adapter : https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIAB274849872 I'd run unRAID on it, and inside it run four Windows XP virtual machines. Due to a bug with QEMU or libusb, I can't just use normal USB passthrough to connect the boards to the virtual machines though, which is what the 4-port quad-channel USB card is for - the hope is that it will be possible to pass through the USB controllers to separate virtual machines. In theory this should be possible - the Atom C3758 processor and motherboard support VT-d - but in practice it depends on whether the CPU/USB card supports ACS for the separate channels, whether it's possible to map the functions on that card to separate IOMMU groups. Does anyone have any any experience with Intel Atom C3758 or multi-channel USB cards who would know if this kind of virtualization setup is possible?

I have a Lepai 2020A+, 2.0 channel amplifier that I would like to output to a 2.1 channel system. I have had this work wonderfully before, but I can't seem to find what kind of "adapter" or function this tech is called. Here is an example of a sub that does what I need. It has the left/right input from an amp and a left/right output to speakers. This is all on a powered subwoofer, where it must have some kind of low-pass filter within to sap the low-end sound out of the left and right signals. What is this adapter/process called? Can I buy one? Thanks

Hello Everyone, I have a little question for you guys, I've done a couple searches I and couldn't find a definitive answer; is plugging your keyboard and mouse into the USB passthrough present on many monitors detrimental for gaming in terms of response time? I'm not too familiar with how the passthrough is wired, does the signal go straight from the mouse/keyboard unhindered to the computer or is there some extra processing which is involved?

I am looking to setup a slightly more complex home network than just the router included with my modem and powerline adapters for ethernet, but I had a few questions. Do I need to use the router built into my modem provided by the isp? I know there is a way to passthrough info like subnet, dns, ip address etc, to a different router, but It is a complicated process with my modem and I would like to either just disable it or not use it. I have an at&t uverse modem in case that is helpful. Also I have some general questions about modems. I know some basic differences between the modem and the router, but what specifically is the function of the modem in relation to the router, and also in relation to stuff like TV and Phone? Why is it a necessary step between router and internet?

I am trying to get internet working on a OSX el capitan VM on my Windows Host Machine. I am on windows 10. In VMWare I have guest tools installed on the OSX VM. In windows I have two VMWare Network adapter drivers installed. VMNet1 and VMNet 8. I have tried a combination of sharing those with a combination of bridged network for the vm and NAT network for the VM along with either DHCP enabled within OSX and just entering everything manually. I am very confused at this point because nothing has worked so if anybody is experienced with VMware that can help me it would be much appreciated, I don't know what else to try.

Hi, I just got myself a new K70 and was wondering why there are two USB Cables: (From the manual) -USB Connection cable -USB Pass-through cable What's the difference? Secondly, what's the USB Port on the back of the keyboard for? Because the manual labels it as "USB-Pass-through port", yet that cable is already plugged into the keyboard as well as the "USB Connection cable" Cheers

My specs: Pentium G3258 ASUS GTX 650 Ti 2GB OC ASUS Z97-A MOBO 12GB RAM Windows 10 Pro I have Windows 10 running in a virtual machine(I'm experimenting), and the only display adapter that shows up is "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter". Is there a way to setup VirtualBox so that it can use my graphics card? Also, would I see any significant performance increase in the virtual machine?

Hi, So I built an HTPC and I'm noticing audio dropouts. I'm using a trial version of WinDVD Pro and I'm noticing the audio continuously dropping out. Initially I thought it was due to the DTS HD audio codec, but then I'm experiencing the problem when I run dolby digital videos. I set the amp to pass the audio to my TV and noticed that its dropping there as well. Funny thing is I'm experiencing a dropout at the same time of the menu of Lilo and Stitch. Please help me solve this issue. I've checked the manual and I did the steps that they said and it hasn't helped out. I really want to get this issue solved and so far am leaning towards the trial software being the culprit as I don't experience any audio dropout with other content (e.g gaming, youtube) Thanks, 4321Rocket

Hello glorious-PC-master race ! I've stumbled upon something here and I would like ot hear your opinion or even a solution to the following. I've installed Linux Mint on Windows 10 Enter-for-prize (Enterprise) Hyper-V. Created a brand new VM and all good to go. The only issue I'm facing is that there is no hardware video acceleration on the VM. Any thoughts ? (Running 64 bit both Host and Guest OS).
