Device: 2015 MacBook Pro 11,4 Ram: 16Gb OS: None Issue: SSD Not Showing up I have a used mid 2015 MacBook pro I picked up secondhand to repair and give to my little cousin. It is the base version of the 15" with the 2.2Ghz i7 and no dedicated graphics, when I purchased it, it had no SSD or Battery but otherwise was in good condition. (I bought it from a Goodwill and they shredded the drive for privacy concerns) I purchased one of those adapters on amazon that converts the apple proprietary connection into a standard M.2 connection (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RXKB1SS) and a 500Gb Crucial P3 NVME SSD (It's Gen 3 by 4, the same as the OEM drive) and I can not get it to detect the drive while it is in the internal slot. I have tried the drive in an external enclosure and it works fine. I have done this swap once before and so i tried that dive that already had a MacOS install on it in the internal slot and it booted up, so its not the adapter. (that drive was just a random 128Gb I had laying around that I was using do do some repairs on a second MacBook.) I tried The new crucial P3 in the other MacBook thinking that it may be a firmware update that the new one was missing but no luck, it didn't show up in that one either. When I say it doesn't show up I mean I've booted into internet recovery and I made bootable installers for Catalina, Big Sur, and Monterey. And no matter which one I boot into, Disk Utility cannot see the drive and the "Reinstall MacOS Utility can't see it either. I did however manage to use my personal MacBook and an SSD enclosure to wipe the drive and install MacOS Monterey using the updater tool in MacOS, and I can plug the drive in using USB to the other MacBook and it will boot to it but the moment I take it out of the enclosure and put it in the internal slot it disappears and won't boot. If it helps the generic M.2 I had laying around is some cheap no-name one out of a Clevo rebranded laptop that a friend gave me to tinker with when it broke, so it was initialized and had a previous windows install on it. I even made a second bootable external drive hoping that maybe it had something to do with initializing the drive in my SSD enclose, but no luck, even with it installed and me booted into MacOS, Disk Utility can't see it. Any Advice would be grateful, I'm trying to keep this MacBook out of a landfill.

Which is better to buy a 2012 unibody mac book pro or a early 2013 retina macbook pro?

I've got a Macbook Pro 16" i9 coming in the mail tomorrow and I'm starting to brainstorm ideas for my setup. This laptop will replace both my current 2013 13" Macbook Pro and my recycling-center salvage gaming PC sporting a i5-4690K base clock, and Radeon HD7900. I've used solutions like Parallels and Bootcamp in the past, but have been disappointed with Paralells' performance and Bootcamp's interruptions of my workflow when I need to switch OSes. In a perfect world, I would have a Paralells workflow (being able to open windows applications within macos without a reboot), and the bare-metal performance of a dual-booted system. No world is perfect, but imagine an oem mac, with all mac compatible hardware running linux with a macos kvm and a windows kvm running inside. This itself doesnt seem impossible, and I would take having to use a keyboard shortcut to jump between kvms. Ill likely explore this option once my machine comes and send you guys updates on my progress. HOWEVER, if anybody has any leads/ideas/followup questions on how we might get Paralells-like windowing so I can just live in OSX, I am all ears. Hope everyone is staying inside and staying safe, Thanks always, Brian

I currently own a Mac mini 2018, but I'm considering upgrading to a MacBook Pro 16" 2019. Is it worth the upgrade? My current specs: Mac mini 2018 3,2 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7 32 GB 2667 MHz DDR4 Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB What I would upgrade to: MacBook Pro 16" 2019 2.3GHz 8‑core 9th‑generation Intel Core i9 processor 32GB 2666MHz DDR4 memory AMD Radeon Pro 5500M with 8GB of GDDR6 memory Since Macs are already expensive, and especially here in Sweden due to our very high taxes, this specification of the MacBook Pro 16" 2019 would cost me exactly 41249 SEK, which converted is 4044 US-dollar. If I sold my Mac mini, I would probably make about $1800 from it, which means that I would have to pay about $2243 for the upgrade. I pretty much only use Adobe After Effects, which is really CPU-intensive (it pretty much never uses the GPU). When I run Cinebench R20 on my Mac mini, I get a score of 2937, and when searching around, I found that the MacBook Pro 16" 2019 2.3GHz 8‑core i9 gets a score of about 3300. Is it worth the upgrade?

Hey guys! New to the forum, but currently deliberating something. I'm an audio engineer in Los Angeles, where I currently work in a few private studios, and do recording and production on the side. I have a base model 2017 13" MacBook Pro, and the machine isn't keeping up on sessions anymore (I use Pro Tools Native, Logic Pro X, and Final Cut Pro X primarily). I've seen a couple options for used Mac minis, but am also looking at the new 16" MacBook Pro. These are the two options I'm considering: Option 1: Mac mini (used, ~$750 after 32gb RAM upgrade) 6-core i5 3.0ghz, 8gb RAM (upgradable), 256gb SSD, iGPU MacBook Pro 13” (already own) Dual-core i5, 8gb RAM, 128gb SSD Thunderbolt enclosure: ~$200 5600XT (because Apple and Nvidia are still playing the blame game about some laptops from like 2011): $200 Overall Price: $1150 Option 2: MacBook Pro 16” 2019-2020: ($2300) 6-Core i7 2.6ghz, 16gb RAM (soldered), 512gb SSD, Radeon Pro 5300M MacBook Pro 13” (seems to sell for around $600-700, mine's in good shape and is still covered for keyboard repairs) Overall Price: $1600-1700 The base model 16" MacBook Pro provides enough power for what I am currently working on, and will be able to do so for a while. 16gb of RAM is probably plenty, and is a pretty big upgrade from what I have now, but I wonder if 32gb would be noticeably beneficial for 24/96 Logic and Pro Tools sessions (better caching of library samples in Komplete Kontrol or Alchemy, for example). The eGPU seems like a solid way to flesh out the Mac mini into a great video editing rig, and I'd have lots of external and network storage regardless of which one I go for, I just wonder which is going to age better in the long-term. Thoughts? Also, I can't go Windows due to FCPX and Logic. I'll keep it with Mint on a Boot Camp drive, though

Hi everyone, I'm new to this so I apologize if I'm posting this in the wrong place. I just started Folding a few days ago on my laptop. It's a Mid 2014 15" MacBook Pro with an i7, 16GB RAM, Intel Iris Pro & NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M and an internal 500GB SSD. Since this is my only machine and it's getting a bit old I'm a bit concerned running Folding@Home full tilt often. I downloaded a third party app called "Fanny" to monitor my CPU temp. While running Folding@Home my CPU temp is right around 90 degrees Celsius. Is this safe or should I be concerned? Any feedback appreciated, thanks!

Hi! I have installed Windows 10 on MacBook Pro 2010, but the audio is not working. I have tried BootCamp 4, BootCamp 5, BootCamp 6 drivers, but non of the audio drivers work. All other drivers from bootcamp install correctly except audio driver. In Device Manager it shows High Definition Audio Controler, thats not working correctly and has error code 10. Can anybody help me? And yes i know that MacBook is not really meant for Windows, but thats what the user of the computer wants, not my decision.

HI, Apologies if this goes somewhere else, couldn't really think of a subcategory that would coverror this. So I have a Early 2011 MacBook Pro 15". Lately the the left fan (looking down from the perspective of using the computer normally) has been audibly louder than it should be. And now today it's gotten incredibly loud and sounds like it's screaming "KILL ME!!!". So need a new fan. Going to get a quote from Apple, but in the likelihood that they want to charge me over $100 to fix it, I went and found a $60 replacement from iFixit. I know their tool kits are nice, have one myself, but have never tried OEM computer part from them. Anyone have experience with any kind of laptop or really any replacement parts from them? As much as I hate Apple's overpriced parts and labor, I don't want to buy a $60 fan and have it break in a few months. Thanks in advance!

So i have a 2012 macbook pro, and this thing runs like a beast. I can run games like cs:go, terraria, dont starve and g-mod. My parents hooked it up with a sandisk 480gb ssd a year back and the computer died, but I revived it somehow. It's got 4gb of ddr3(L i think) ram and I was wondering how much longer this system could last before I need to upgrade to 6gb or 8gb of ram. I usually have 10-15 tabs open and some background apps running (like spotify or youtube) and I think that's eating away at my ram's life. Thanks!

Hi LTT universe! forgive this freshblood is a mac user amongst all this windows wizards. Taking a chance to ask a tricky situation. Context: i am currently using a 2012 Macbook Pro, with 750GB storage and 8GB memory. Currently using bootcamp, with 500GB for mac and 250GB for windows. Current usage of mac is 270/500GB and 200/250GB for windows. This just shows i don't really need a big SSD. Reason of upgrading is i start to feel that the mac is getting slow at booting and normal usage. I suspect the HDD is degrading through wear and tear. upgrading RAM is my second stage. for now, SSD. (whats your opinion?) i am planning to upgrade to using a dual storage, SSD (in the optical drive bay) and HDD (the same one). putting all the OS and the application (and bootcamp windows) in the SSD and all the stored files (etc media) in the HDD. Would this be possible??? I am thinking of buying a smaller storage for my SSD as i only use a fraction of mine. I am looking at 250GB SSD (or 500GB to be safe). I've been looking around and most of them have a 1-to-1 size (or bigger) to "carbon copy" the HDD to SSD before upgrading the hardware. Can someone advise me in this? would this be possible for me to execute? How? I thought of using my time machine backup(external), to get all the content back. This means ill be installing the OS in the SSD fresh and wiping off my HDD. Then fetching all the data off the external backup. However, i'm concern if it would also fetch the OS into the old HDD as well. Is this possible or am i just being silly? so many questions! I hope someone would give me a hand, i'd appreciate it a lot! feel free to ask if the info is not sufficient. I look forward to hear from all of you! Thank you! Regards, Immmy

Hi everyone, I"m not much of a Mac person. Way more of a Windows person. I have a MacBook Pro (2008) running El Capitan. I get an Optimum Wifi pop up asking me to sign in like 3 times a day. iCloud repeatedly asks me to confirm my password for my email, over and over again. One problem was the system clock. It was way off and so that seemed to invalidate security certificates for common websites like Google. Updating the system clock seemed to fix it. Thanks for any help you can give.

Hi! I just sold my MSI gaming laptop today and I am now searching for a MacBook Pro to replace it. I am thinking between the 13 in 2015 model or the 13 in 2016 model with touchbar. I am aiming to use this computer for at least 5 years before I sell it and upgrade to a new computer. Which computer would be a better choice for me to buy since I know that Apple computers tend to hold their resale value very well since I just sold my 5 year old MacBook Pro Mid 2012 for $600 when I got it for $1,100. Now before you guys tell me that MacBooks are overpriced and underpowered, I know all of this already. But I already have a Windows gaming desktop and I am not really looking to buy a windows laptop either so I am going with the MacBook for simplicity. Say if something were to break with it then I could just drive it over to the Apple Store in Cupertino, CA since I live 10 mins away from the Apple Headquarters... Whereas with a Windows laptop I would have to RMA it somewhere and wait 2 or 3 weeks before I get it back. Plus I used my sister's MacBook Pro and I fell in love with the OS and design of the computer. My question is which model should I get? I don't really mind the USB C ports and dongle life since this will open up the door for eGPUs when they become more affordable in the future, along with having a high speed connection for pretty much anything. The 2015 model should be less annoying now, but I feel that it won't be as "futureproof" since it doesn't have the next gen USB C ports. I'm fine with spending $1,700 if the computer would last for at least 5 years. Though preferably I would want to spend less.

Hi! I don't know if this counts to be in the CPU section, but I am in the process of selling my MSI gaming laptop and using the money I get from it to buy a MacBook Pro and the current models have Skylake CPUs. I am wondering is it worth the wait till around October for them to release the late 2017 model with the Kaby Lake CPUs? The reason for this is because I heard that Kaby Lake CPUs are more energy efficient than Skylake so that should equate to a longer battery life. Also I heard that Kaby Lake has some native video encoding and decoding so that it is more energy efficient. Is that good for watching videos and movies on YouTube and Netflix? Also I saw that Kaby Lake CPUs are clocked higher than Skylake chips along with having a higher turbo clock speed. After I sell my gaming laptop then I would only have my desktop left for a computer. So that is why I am asking is it worth the wait? Or will the performance and power efficiency not be big of a difference to justify the wait time.

For all those people shouting out that $2495 is not worth it for a convertilbe without a dGPU and we are paying a premium for the "Porsche Design" Logo, The Surface Book with similar specs and a dGPU is $205 higher than the Surface Book with the iGPU. The MacBook "Pro" 13 inch is available with only iGPU where as the 15 inch is available with dGPU (The Radeon Pro 460, NOT to be confused with the RX 460) Both Surface Book and MacBook "Pro" are still using Skylake where as Book One is using Kaby Lake. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/d/surface-book/8TXJ08Q9LXDT/BW3T?icid=Surface_cat_BookSubNav - Surface Book with the dGPU $2699 https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/d/surface-book/8TXJ08Q9LXDT/BW3T?icid=Surface_cat_BookSubNav - Surface Book with the iGPU $2499 https://www.apple.com/shop/buy-mac/macbook-pro?product=MNQF2LL/A&step=config# - MacBook Pro (13 inch specced similarly $2499) [Has iGPU] https://www.apple.com/shop/buy-mac/macbook-pro?product=MLH32LL/A&step=config# - MacBook Pro (15 inch specced similarly $2699) [Has dGPU] http://www.porsche-design.us/Men/Smartphones-Sound/Computing/Porsche-Design-Book-One.html - Porsche Design Book One $2495 That makes the Porsche Design Book One $4 cheaper than it's competitors. And one must not forget that Book One is using Kaby Lake where as others are still using Skylake. Oh, btw, those $4 matter because i can use them to get a nice chocolate bar.

I have a Macbook Pro (2015) and I'm facing a problem with it, where whenever I put the Magsafe charger, the main adapter body and the magnetic jack heats up so highly that I can't even touch it and the bar below the screen (top of keyboard) also heats up pretty highly that I cannot bear it, thus cannot also put it on my lap.(This happens without charger also) So I've come to a point where I contacted apple support twice, where first one asked me to not use it, and the other one said it's normal of charger and laptop heating up and made me clean my cache and made me install MalwareBytes. Also point to note that I'M TALKING ABOUT IDLE TEMPS where no load is being put up by any background tasks. Also, my charger cable has also turned yellowish (Pic inserted). Laptop is in warranty and I've not got any time to go to applecare.

I am "planning" to use my macbook pro as my daily driver (connected to an external display) and ditch my pc completely since I don't play video games any more. I am currently having a quad core i7, rx480 machine that is sitting there doing nothing 95% of the time cos I mostly use my macbook pro to do everyday tasks as well as programming. People who use their laptops (preferably macbooks, if not don't worry just share your experience ) as their daily drivers, please share your experiences here. there are a few things I would like to know. Is it really that inconvenient to have a laptop and some external HDDs connected to it 24/7? What are the pros and cons to ditch desktop completely? What laptop are you using? Are they gonna age badly if you connect them to an external display 24/7? Storage wise, how much storage does your laptop contain? How much storage does your external HDD/ server contain? Thanks!

Hi! I am looking to buy a used 13 inch Mid 2012 MacBook Pro either modified or bone stock (unmodified). I would prefer to buy one bone stock since I'd like to modify it myself, but what would you guys think is a fair price for a bone stock or modified 13 Inch Mid 2012 MacBook Pro? The specs for a bone stock model are 4GB of DDR3 RAM, i5 3210m @2.5GHz, 500GB 5,400 RPM HDD, and a optical drive. I see bone stock models going for around $500 to $550 on Craigslist in my area, but I think that's a bit nuts and overpriced... What are your guys thoughts and inputs? Please vote in the polls and if the option isn't in the polls then please drop a comment down bellow on what you think is a fair price for a 13 inch Mid 2012 MacBook Pro that is either bone stock or modified.

Hi all, Hope you all are having/had a good weekend. I have a problem in choosing a new laptop. I want to upgrading from my old Macbook Air (Early 2015) to a Macbook Pro. But, I m a photographer so the new Macbook, without a SDXC card slot is a huge bummer for me. Despite that, the screen is also important to me and because the new MBP have better screen, i m now stuck with the decision: A. Buy the 2015 MBP and deal with a different screen. But all of the old port that i love and need like the SDXC. B. Buy the new MBP which is slightly faster and have better screen but then i have to live the dongle life. Thanks.

Hey LTTF, I posted this similar question on Reddit but never got a helpful response apart from the fact that people told me I was wrong. I need to retire my Macbook Pro Mid 2010. It's getting slow, clunky, apps don't work as good as they used to once do and I don't particularly want to blow any more money into this machine. I was given it by my girlfriend 2 years ago when she got her iMac and I've basically replaced my desktop PC with it as I use it 24/7. But now, I feel as if I need an upgrade as I want more speed, performance and a much nicer screen (not like the horrible 720p-ish screen my MBP has, ew) I don't have a set price point but preferably something under £1000. I want speed, enough to deal with at least Photoshop CC but aside from that I need to be able to do college work, website development etc. I was thinking a 2013-2014 MBP with the i5, 8/16GB of RAM and the 256GB SSD but am not sure. Any by all means, if you have a windows-equivalent laptop suggestion please suggest it below as I love both OSs equally!

I wanna install ubuntu along side with OS X. I knew that I can install linux either on a usb drive, or an external SSD. Which one do you guys recommend? What are the pros and cons of each choice? I am more lean towards to the external SSD solution, cos I want to utilise that speed. Plus I have 2 of those SSd drives laying around doing nothing.

Hi, so I just bought a new 2016 MacBook Pro 13 inch with touchbar and I'm pretty happy with my purchase. However, I noticed that with about 7 tabs open in Chrome, the ram usage was sitting at 5.5GB out of 8GB total. The model I bought had a 256GB SSD and 8GB of ram. Should I return my MacBook and get the 16GB version because I intend to keep my MacBook for at least 5 or 6 years before I would replace/upgrade to another computer. The 256GB SSD doesn't bother me since I could always use external storage either an SSD or HDD to combat that, it's just the ram that raises questions for me since there really is no solution to that problem other than buying more from the start. It would cost roughly $306 more to upgrade the ram to from 8GB to 16GB. My question is that would it be worth it to buy the one with 16GB of ram? Or just stick to the 8GB one I have. I'll be honest, $306 to get 16GB of ram is a bit nuts.
