  1. Hello people, I thought maybe it was time to start a build log for this puppy, after I've held off doing much with it (for various reasons) for an embarrassingly long time. I originally received the MBX MKII in December of 2016. For various reasons it was stuck in storage for a long time though, and I only finished building a basic build in it in October last year. But rather than dwell on the past, I'm focusing on now - I have a lot of time, and I've mostly sorted out my things here after a recent move. So now we're building, albeit somewhat in steps. For one, I'm still working to afford a few more watercooling parts before I put it under water. Before we move to pictures, let's throw in the specs: CPU: Intel i7 5820k Mobo: Asus Sabertooth X99 RAM: 32GB (4x8GB) G.Skill Value 2400MHz C15 GPU: EVGA GTX 1070 FTW PSU: EVGA Supernova G3 750w SSD: Samsung 850 Evo 1TB HDD: WD Green 3TB Update: The build is done! Old post: Now this build isn't complete, far from it even, so please be patient with me.
  2. My custom-loop custom desk-pc-build, with all its 'customness' glory to be revealed when complete! Feel free to reach out if you have questions
  3. So I've recently been in the market for a portable pc gaming solution. I browsed around for laptops for a couple weeks but couldn't find exactly what i wanted within my budget. So after receiving a little inspiration for linus in his triple monitor laptop build, I decided to go with a desktop instead. While this may not be truly portable or mobile because i can't use without power outlet, It's still an upgradable option, which is something i was hardly going to find with a laptop. And so, here it is: Cooler Master Elite 130 ASUS ROG STRIX Z270I GAMING LGA 1151 Intel Z270 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Mini ITX EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 GAMING DirectX 12 06G-P4-6262-KR 6GB 192-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 Video Card CORSAIR RMx Series RM550X 550W 80 PLUS GOLD Haswell Ready Full Modular Intel Core i5-7600K Kaby Lake Quad-Core 3.8 GHz LGA 1151 91W Crucial MX300 2.5" 525GB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) G.SKILL Aegis 16GB (2 x 8GB) And for the monitor; GeChic 1503H 15.6" IPS 1080p Portable Monitor
  4. I know these things have been done before and by people better at this than I, but that's a terrible reason not to do something cool. The real impetus for me was finding some digital photos of a similar build I did a decade and a half ago. (Album here) I was pretty damn proud of this thing when I was a wee boy, but looking back the overwhelming though was: I could do so much better now. Shortly afterward, the new low profile 1050 Ti was announced by MSI, and in quick succession I found ungreedy's build here on these very forums. After that, there was no hope; I was going to build my own. So another guy is going to build a another PC into another Nintendo Entertainment System. Let's talk hardware real quick. This isn't meant to be a monster. It's going to be small. It will hopefully be quiet. Frankly, it's going to go right into an entertainment system like the old NES was. This will be a couch gamer. Nothing crazy. Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-H170N-WIFI CPU: Intel i5-6500T CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-L9I RAM: Ballistix Sport LT 8GB DDR4 2400 (PC4 19200) x 2 SSD: Intel 600P PCI-E 240GB VGA: MSI GeForce GTX 1050 Ti DLP Fan: Fractal Design Silent R2, x 2 or 3 PSU: 160w Pico PSU All of this has been purchased and is already in my bin of parts. Choices here were determined as much by my constraints as anything else. I'm using a T series Intel chip in part because I'm a bit worried about heat, and in part because I found a good deal on eBay. There's a bit of thermal headroom with the cooler, but not so much on my PSU. I have a higher watt DC-DC board that I could move to if need be, but that comes with some cabling woes that I'm hoping to avoid at the moment. That SSD doesn't provide a ton of room either, but it's small form factor more than makes up for it. If I can still with the smaller PSU, than a larger 2.5" drive could be added to gain some local storage as well. The NES doner was specifically purchased as a DOA "for parts" box. I needed decent plastic, but none of the guts. The circuit board and other internals were not in working order when I acquired this unit, so I don't have any guilt about binning a working unit. I am also, regrettably, no the most conscientious about taking a bunch of in progress photos. In fact, this post is stepping in well into the build. I'm going to post everything that's already digital, but even that's a bit behind. Anyway, let's get to the good stuff. There's been plenty of work since this initial fit, so more to come.

  6. ---- Note to moderators: I created this new thread since the build log has been dormant for such a long time that reviving the old thread would be tantamount to necromancy. Should you prefer that however, feel free to inform me and merge the threads. ---- An Introduction Nearly two years ago I started a build log on these forums as part of a project to visually enhance my otherwise perfectly functional, albeit partially aging, gaming rig, which I'd already previously named Melanie in accordance with my preponderance for giving girls' names to my computers. I worked on it for a bit, and then I got kind of sidetracked and forgot about the whole thing. Part of the motivation for upgrading Melanie was not necessarily related to aesthetics, but more to the fact that my AMD Phenom II X6 1055T was starting to show its age somewhat, and while the FX-series had never represented an actual upgrade, the prospect of the then-recently announced Zen microarchitecture was very enticing indeed. Here we are, more than a dozen months later, and the microarchitecture in question is finally about to get released. To that end, and with my desire to upgrade my CPU still very strong, I decided to officially revisit this build in a build log here. A Small Sitrep Given that I quite suddenly gave up on the old build log without having achieved even half of its goals, particularly when it comes to aesthetics, the current state of Melanie can really best be summed up as "something of a half-arsed effort". It looks perfectly functional, and I'm still very much in love with the way that graphics card paintjob turned out. The colour scheme is also mostly on point and consistent throughout the build, though the brown PCB of my ASRock 970 Extreme4 is still as much of an eyesore as it ever was. Equally, the Kingston HyperX Fury DIMMs, while made by the greatest RAM manufacturer on the planet and certainly not ugly, don't have quite the "punch" that I expected them to have when I bought them; they look rather docile next to the graphics card and even the CPU cooler. Fortunately, the upgrade to Zen will give me cause to replace both those components (even though at the time, I bought the Furys in the hope that Zen would have DDR3 support). For those who immediately clicked on the link above to go through my old build log, I have to add a few things to bring you up to speed. Since that build log went dead, I actually went out and bought a windowed side panel, as the folly of doing a lot of internal surgery that won't be seen by anyone started to dawn on me more and more, as well as an extra dual-SSD tray from Phanteks that is officially sold for the Enthoo Primo, but I found works just as well in the Enthoo Pro. Sadly neither of those things are visible in the picture above. What is visible is that I changed my boot drive, from a Samsung 850 Evo 250GB to a Kingston HyperX Predator 240GB. Yes, I know that going from a SATA SSD to a non-NVMe M.2 SSD isn't necessarily the greatest speed upgrade you can make, but the M.2 drive actually has a very specific role to play in the new build, which I will get to later. A Parts List Since the main part of this build log will be a platform upgrade, things such as the PSU, graphics card, case and storage drives will remain unchanged. The CPU cooler will also stay, as I really love the slim yet powerful PH-TC14S. A quick rundown of the current configuration (excluding fans and non-boot drives) would come down to the following: AMD Phenom II X6 1055T (stock clocks at 2.8GHz) Phanteks PH-TC14S ASRock 970 Extreme 4 Kingston HyperX Fury (2x8GB, 1866MHz, CAS9) Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming Kingston HyperX Predator 240GB Corsair RM750X Phanteks Enthoo Pro I shan't go through the entire list again for the system as it will be, but the new CPU, motherboard and RAM are as follows: AMD Ryzen7 1800X Gigabyte Aorus X370-Gaming 5 G.Skill TridentZ (2x8GB, 3200MHz, CAS16) A minor difference that is worth being born in mind is that in the current configuration, my GTX 970 is running stock clocks, because it's already borderline bottlenecked by the CPU anyway and giving it extra voltage for no significant extra performance seems a bit silly. I might give it a bit of an overclock as part of the build log, even if the main limiting factor of the 970 at the moment is not its GPU computing power but its VRAM capacity. Just to throw in an extra picture, here's the preordered CPU and motherboard (the RAM I've already got): As you can plainly see from the little picture (or Gigabyte's site, if you don't want to strain your eyes), the Aorus board fits the existing aesthetic of the build very neatly, and I don't anticipate having to do any painting or other modding on the heatsinks and cosmetic shrouds of the board. A Few Photos As I mentioned, I've already got the RAM. I preordered it a while ago because of the rising RAM prices and my unwillingness to pay more money for the exact same product if I waited until now to buy the stuff. As we know, Ryzen CPUs are currently having some issues with high-speed RAM, so I'll probably clock it down from 3200MHz to 2666MHz until the rumoured fix in the shape of a BIOS update comes along. I will be painting the coolers on these DIMMs to make them match the theme of the build a bit better. As it stands, they already fit the colour scheme excellently, but I want to have more blue in the system, and so the black parts of the RAM coolers will be painted metallic blue (for reference, it's the same as the backplate of the graphics card in the sitrep picture) Another thing that I've already got is the AM4 mounting kit for my PH-TC14S. Phanteks was kind enough to send me one free of charge, which I think is excellent, and it dropped on the mat just today. I was expecting an AM4 kit, but what I actually got is a kit that fits both AM4's and the old AMD mounting holes, in the same way that many coolers already do with Intel's 115X series of sockets and their ever-so-slightly different mounting holes. Nice! An Outro That wraps it up for this first installment in my new build log. I'll be back tomorrow to show off some of the renders for the to-be-3D-printed shrouds* as well as more elaboration on what other things I plan to do. Equally, expect a lengthy update once the CPU and motherboard have been delivered. Thanks very much for bearing with me, and I promise I'll actually finish the build this time. * = There's a teaser for the PSU shroud in the header image already, if you truly cannot wait.
  7. CPU: i5 4690k @ 4.5ghz, 1.235v w/dark rock 3 cooler GPU: Asus DC2 r9 390 8gb w/corsair h55 Ram: 2x4gb hyperx savage 1866mhz cl9 Storage: 1tb WD blue, 480gb sandisk ultra 2 ssd Case: fractal design define r5 PSU: Corsair CS650m Red LEDs for 20% more FPS So this is my first ever PC build, been an ongoing project, finally kinda finished...ish. Only issue I had with it was the GPUs fan header decided to stop working, and I had no warranty as i bought the card second hand - so I took that as an excuse to slap an AIO on it lol Curious what y'all think
  8. (If you're wondering, Mir was a space station operated by the Soviet Union and later Russia from 1986 to 2001. I named it that since my desktops are named after American ships (Apollo being my main rig) and my laptop is named Sputnik since it's made of mostly aluminium.) So for a long time I have been interested in small but powerful laptops to replace my Alienware M11xR3. While I absolutely love that machine, it's getting old and the cooling system is totally shot as well as battery replacements. $300 to drop into that machine isn't exactly a smart decision for me. After some research I stumbled across the Elitebook 2570p. It's a 12.5" laptop with a socketed CPU (and support for 4c/8t quad core chips), dual HDD/SSD and RAID support, no WiFi whitelist and a 4G card port. But the big feature for me was the support for external graphics cards over the ExpressCard bus. It seems like a very cool thing to just go to my dad's place, drop the PC down into the HP dock and then plug in a GPU and start playing games. It's similar to the Blade Stealth + Core, except that this ENTIRE BUILD (Core costs an eye watering $700 here!) costs less than the Core alone. I picked up a base model 2570p off a local large computer refurbisher at auction for $240AUD. It came with a Core i5 2C/4T CPU at 2.8Ghz, 4GBs of RAM, and a 500GB HDD. I quickly swapped out the 500GB HDD with a new one I had lying around, and took the 8GB DIMM I had in the Alienware out and swapped the old 2GB back into there. I also ripped out the DVD drive - it was just extra weight that I didn't really freakin need. This thing is pretty snappy in daily tasks - the screen isn't amazing, and it gets a little too warm for my tastes, but it runs perfectly well. The company I bought it from had cleaned out the machine top to bottom, but that isn't hard as you'll see in a minute. HP offers a 120pg book on how to dismantle and reassemble this thing. Here's some views of the inside and bottom: Now onto the interesting part: the external GPU dock, which is nicknamed 'Mir'. The Elitebook natively supports up to Nvidia Kepler GPUs, or AMD and later Nvidia cards by using a memory override. This didn't matter to me, as I had a 770 sitting in my main system ready to be upgraded. It also supports hot-plugging the GPU and using the internal display for gaming with the GPU via Optimus. I ordered a GDC Beast v8 Expresscard to PCI-E 16x converter for just $50 off eBay, and it arrived at my door around a month after. It included a small plastic box with a couple ports and a PCI-E 16x slot on top, a data connection to ExpressCard cable, and a 20+4pin connector to their proprietary standard cable. Pretty freakin' cool. I then went on a search for a good cheap PSU. Efficiency didn't matter shit, as long as it was from a name brand and has 6+8pin connectors, I'd take it. I found a local place that tears down computers, and I got a cheap Cooler Master 500W PSU with 2x6pin, one through dual molex conns for $25 (before it ran a 2600k and a 570 afaik), and then ordered a 2x molex to PCI-E 8pin for $7 delivered. (For the PSU Nazi Squad, it doesn't really matter since it isn't even hitting 300W load out of 500W if I used a 770) Disaster strikes, and I'm fairly sure my 770 is stone-dead. I couldn't get it to boot, but I didn't try reseating it, instead just ripping it out of my system and dropping in my new 1070. My local PC shop didn't have a system to test it in, and I was again on the look for a new Kepler GPU. And this is where this story ends for now. To-do: - Get the special case that GDC offers for the Beast. It's not a priority, but if it's cheap I'm totally in. - Get a new Kepler GPU. Maybe 760, 780, or 780Ti. I'm gaming at 900p here, so it doesn't really matter that much. - Get a 3rd Gen i7-quad to go into the laptop. This will bring me up to desktop i5-tier performance. - Make mods to the cooling system. Make this thing not run so hot and heck, maybe even make it last longer on battery. - Get an SSD. This thing badly needs one. - Get the plastics kit from HP to get a space saver for the ODD bay. I don't need it, it's 2017 for fuck's sake. - Test everything. If you read to here, you're awesome . This is just a little side project of mine that I wanted to share with all of you here.

    Alien v1.0

Hi guys, so, I've been planning on this for quite a long time now and it's finally here (sort of...) The planning is complete, the parts arrived and I'm about to get building it anytime now It's not the END yet but a START, since I'm planning on getting some more stuff into it, but for now, it's this. I know some people might question the choice of components that I got but it's fine, we have such a great variety of hardware right now that everyone can choose something that suits his/hers needs perfectly (at a pricepoint) and those are my choice, not gonna be sorry about it Considering the fact that my last PC update was back in 2012 or so, this is a really big deal for me and even with X299 incoming I belive it's gonna serve me well PC Part Picker link for those might wanna check it out: Alien 1.0 If you're wondering where did the name came from - this build is going to be heavily green-themed and watercooled with a custom loop later on with possible some nice case modding aswell , hopefully I will get to make it resemble Alien at least a little But that's the future plans for it, for now I want to assemble this thing and get it up and running. Tuning will come after. Hope you'll like it and keep your fingers crossed for me on it please Cheers
  10. If there are any firearm enthusiasts on here, some may get the reference for the build title. This will be my extreme water-cooling build inside my new CaseLabs SMA8 Black case that has just arrived, and If it isn't apparent this will be an all blacked-out build. Throughout the build I will be writing my thoughts on the individual components and any associated customer service and benefits. Here is the build list so far: Case: CaseLabs SMA8 Black* CPU: Intel Core i7-7820X (New Skylake-X 8c/16t chip) I think this chip will have the most overclocking potential, and its an 8 core chip that has fallen almost half price Mobo: TBD X299, Looking mainly at either EVGA or ASUS boards as they offer great overall experiences for products RAM: 32GB Crucial Ballistix LP 2400mHz* GPUs: 2x EVGA GTX 1080ti Founders Ed. SLI PSU: Corsair RM1000i* Storage: Samsung 860 m.2 256GB SSD & HGST (Formerly Hitatchi) 6TB NAS drive 7200RPM* Water-cooling: All EKWB/Primochill hardware w/ Fractal Design (All black blocks/fittings/rads/PETG tubing/fans with Mayhems X1 Clear coolant) in Dual Loop configuration Lighting: RGB module/strips with simple warm white light to highlight the hardware *Parts that are either in hand or being reused. I am currently in a configuration phase with my current hardware to get myself familiar with the MASSIVE case and what other extra parts I may need to order (already had to order two brackets separately). Also theres an unintentional Pauls Hardware Cameo in this round of pictures.
  11. Hey Everyone! My name is Dawson and thanks so much for checking out my build log! This will be my fourth build, second time liquid cooling, and first time using a form factor other than ATX. The goal of this build is to find a case that has excellent craftsmanship and subtle aesthetics (and will therefore need no exterior modification) and modify the interior to create a unique but clean look. That being said, let’s get on with the specs: Core Components: CPU – 6800k GPU – Gtx 1080 RAM – 32gb G.skill Ripjaws 4 2666mhz Mobo – Asus X99-M WS PSU – Corsair RM1000i Storage – Samsung 960 Evo 250gb, Intel 750 Series 400gb PCIE, 2x Samsung 850 EVO 250gb in RAID 0 Case – Phanteks Evolv Micro ATX Glass, Anthracite Grey Liquid Cooling: Blocks – EK Nickel Plexi for CPU, GPU, Intel SSD Pump – Alphacool VPP755 with EK X-Top Revo Plexi Radiators – EK SE240 and EK SE360 Fans – 5x Noiseblocker BlackSilent Pro Reservoir – Singularity Computers Protium Medium – Polished Acrylic with Black rings Fittings – TBD, Bitspower 16mm of some colour most likely Fluid – TBD, leaning towards Mayhems X-1 Purple at this point Miscellaneous: Cables – Scratch-Built using Mainframe Customs Black Sleeving and Gosumodz Alliance Combs Lighting – TBD Control – Aquaero 6 PRO with Flow and Temp Sensors Nanoxia CoolForce Cable Combs Modification list: Create a custom, inverted motherboard tray from aluminum Create a custom rear case panel to clean up the aesthetics Modify the GPU bracket (for what I won’t say yet…) ;P Powder coat all interior parts matte black That’s all for now, but I’ll just leave the obligatory group photo below for now: Thanks for looking!
  12. 1. Budget - £600 / $775 2. Aim / Upgrade - building a hackintosh to replace my dying imac. The idea is that the system will be better then the current iMac cheapest iMac specs and be upgradable overtime when money allows. I shall be using it for web / email / media streaming and my design work. So photoshop, illustrator etc. Also wanting to get into video editing and 3D modeling / printing. 3. Monitors Plan on running two monitors maybe a 3rd in the future. 4. Peripherals Keyboard.... Possibly Montior - Already got one but would like to the same and need a mounting system for them. Will be using sites such as eBay / amazon / ebuyer.co.uk for my purchasing my parts ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hopefully my build will make sense I've copied and pasted it from a thread on another forum. So I've not built a pc in a long time!! I think it was 15 years ago since my last build! I built myself a pc as I could make it better spec and for half the price of a mac at the time. Then throughout the years I gradually moved to apple, got myself a G4 power book (which is still going strong!) and an iMac. My reason for this build is i need a new mac due to my iMac being on its last legs and apple is now a rip off! Only good thing about them is the OS and I don't have £1000 spare. So I'm building a Hackintosh on a budget that will hopefully cost half the price of the basic spec iMac and be alot better! ------------------------------------------------------------- iMac Spec - www.apple.com/uk 21.5-inch iMac - Item Price: £1,049.00 Hardware; 1.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 2.7GHz 8GB 1867MHz LPDDR3 1TB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm Intel HD Graphics 6000 Magic Mouse 2 Magic Keyboard (British) & Users Guide (English) Accessory Kit ------ I've been using tonymacx86.com to help with the right configuration of parts to build the hackintosh. My new Hackintosh Spec (Hopefully) Gigabyte GA-Z170-HD3P Socket LGA1151 HDMI 7.1 Channel Audio Motherboard £112.12 Intel Core i5 6600 3.3GHz Socket 1151 6MB L3 Cache Retail Boxed Processor £214.98 Gigabyte GTX 750 Ti 4GB GDDR5 Dual-link DVI HDMI PCI-E Grpahics Card £118.20 Corsair Vengeance LPX 8GB (2x4GB) DDR4 DRAM 2133MHz C13 Memory Kit - Red65.97 Samsung 850 EVO 250GB 2.5inch SSD £88.18 Corsair Carbide 300R Case with Window £72.98 Corsair VS Series 550 Watt VS550 Power Supply £38.49 Edimax Gigabit PCIe Network Card £9.68 LG Super Multi Blue Internal 14x Blu-ray Disc Rewriter WH14NS40 £58.22 Total: £778.82 ALL PRICES / PARTS SOURCED FROM EBUYER.COM - this is just a guide for now, parts need changing in places - Im wanting to get the build cost under 600 Including 2 monitors. Now the under £600 MIGHT BE A CHALLENGE.... BUT I LOVE A CHALLENGE!! And Im not going to get the parts right on first go
  13. Well, I'm finally gaming on my Ryzen 1800x build. It's not completely done yet, as I'm still waiting on Corsair to ship me my bracket for the H115i (literally, I've been waiting a month now), so I'm stuck on air cooling until then. Here's some pictures of the cabling in the back. The back side The inside (with the temporary stock FX heatsink) and my borrowed R9 390 from my FX build (will be replacing with Vega when it comes out) A view of some of the LEDs My SSD is just temporarily unmounted, as I needed to get a SATA power extension cable. The ever important case badges. Completed with side panels on (I forgot to take the plastic off before taking the picture) Specs are as follows: CPU - AMD Ryzen 7 1800x MoBo - Gigabyte GA-AX370-Gaming K7 Cooler - Corsair H115i (not currently mounted) RAM - 2 x 8GB Corsair Vengeance LPX 300MHz CMK16GX4M2B3000C15W (only able to get 2666MHz stable, currently) Case - Cooler Master Storm Trooper PSU - 650WT SeaSonic Prime Titanium Video - XFX R9 390 8GB (to be replaced with Vega) SSD - 240GB Sandisk Extreme Pro HDD - 1TB Hitachi, 2TB Hitachi, 3TB HGST, 5TB HGST (basically, all Hitachi drives, which have served me extremely well over the years). Optical - LG Blu-Ray burner/HD-DVD player OS - Windows 10 Pro OEM x64 So far as the optical drive goes, I realize that HD-DVD is deader than Betamax. I just like the thought of having one that can actually play it, even if I don't own a single disc.
  14. It is finally time for me to start my first modding project, feels very exciting. I have spent many months reading forums and reviews trying to decide on what case to base my build on. That case decision outlines all other hardware, specially my custom water loop components as the case defines the dimensions available. To make the project even more exciting and challenging I decided to not only do my first mod, but also to build my very first water cooled computer and go all in with full loop and hard lines. I hope I can inspire someone with this build, but happy as I finally found my passion – building and modding computers. Basic concept I wanted to create a computer that could pass only for a piece of furniture. First idea was to convert a 300mm wide kitchen cabinet that is part of my location built gaming desk, but abandoned that idea early. Instead the concept of a Scandinavian inspired design theme that would work as a design piece inspired by a furniture was born. Black, white and grey quickly formed the colour theme and strict and clean lines with light surfaces formed around the Scandinavian theme. Light wood was out of the loop from start This foundation has formed all my choices when picking components as well. Keep true to the theme, colours and concept. This theme also made it easy not to jump on the RGB train. This is an unsponsored project, except from my amazing girlfriend, that is my biggest sponsor. 17. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/PKM2nn This build was meant to be up-gradable. I have bought my GPU my Motherboard and My case. I am certain I want a mini itx. I cant deicide between this cpu or a pentium g4560. I believe this CPU is good enough for me since I don't play that many games anymore. I want some recommendations on what I could change. I wanted this to be a $550 build and I think I hit it, I also have a spare m.2 ssd from my gaming laptop

I did my best i could with my phone
  20. Soooooo not sure what goes and what doesn't, I kind of read the rules thing, definitely didn't lurk and learn but instead just jumping in. I mean what's the worst that happens I use a comma in a thread instead of a semi-colon and the punctuation Nazis storm my house; insult my life's work, and I'm forced to watch my thread be deleted and cry myself to sleep. Not like that hasn't happened before so nothing to lose. No regerts. So lets start off with a dream. about 7 years ago, before I had kids and the state showed me some paperwork that appeared to have my signature saying I was married, there was this dream. A dream of building a computer, modding that computer, and playing hardcore graphics intensive games like... Age of Empires III and Diablo and do so with so much hardware that whenever anyone sees what I have under the hood they say crazy things like "You're an Idiot you can run those games on a smart phone why did you spend enough money to buy a car on your computer?!". I don't have a good answer to that question, probably never will. The first iteration before I went broke and the dream was halted included a Phenom Black 9750 if my memory serves me correct, a 9800 GT in a Massive full tower windowless NZXT Phantom. No photo since well. It was a windowless case with a brown motherboard, stock cooler, and enough LED fans to hold a LED addicts anonymous meeting. One thing was learned, Full tower cases are not for me, and you do not have to fill every fan mount with a fan to make a computer run. Second iteration when I was no longer broke but my hardware was useless to mod by this time. Based off the I5 2550k cause that .1ghz guys! a 4x4 kit of blue Corsair Vengence DDR3 1600 Ram to match with my Asus P8Z68-V Pro in this sexy XION Predator Gaming Series Mid tower and a H100 corsair AIO cooler cause stock coolers are for squares. Photo of what my build would have looked like if I took a photo of it. Hopefully that formatting worked... Not the actual stress test but some minor proof for when my brother asked why I was dumb enough to pay for a unlocked CPU. I don't know what really happened after that but somehow I ended up with a white windowed Phantom 630.... a full tower..... yeah I know I said they are not for me and they are not.... but they are just so Damn Pretty! Either way here is a photo of internals since you probably know what a white phantom 630 looks like. mmmmm hot sauce. Now at this point you probably are like "PartyLeader uhhhh those are definitely not a EVGA 550 ti". I know time lines are hard. Previous to this there would have been a 680 Classified upgrade to that 550ti cause well Skyrim ENBs. Then later my brother was building a computer and me being a good human being donated that 680 to his build and suffered through installing dual 970s. Your second question is like hey dude is that a 1000w power supply. And yes, we both can read, otherwise this thread would be kind of awkward for you to be on, especially if my images don't work...... All I have to say to you is Newegg sale and don't you remember my dream? Either way the Phantom 630 didn't last long and with it went the I5-2550k as I learned again. I don't want a huge case. So I picked up the current iteration an I5 6600k a 2x8 kit if Crucial Ballistix Tactical, and a glorious MATX board that supports SLI the ASRock Z170m Extreme4. There was only like 2 boards at the time that did this and the other looked like a race car vomited on it. Then the coup de grâce the case of my dreams a full tower Phantom the Phanteks Enthoo Evolv MATX. Either way I drew up a bunch of pretty pictures trying to figure out what I wanted to do to this gorgeous case. I then ignored them all and started randomly spray painting it Fluorescent Green and White. The Room Rebuilding Now that the dream has started. Hopefully it comes into reality. Not sure where it is going as over the years as you probably..... maybe not have read I just been kinda flying by the seat of my pants and will continue to do so as next is motherboard and component painting. Then after taxes in 2017 water cooling. O Yeah Glam.... Unknown to you I have not looked at my work under the proper light until just before writing this very line. So here it is with a jury rigged Cable mods UV LED strip. Hopefully someone enjoyed this as I enjoyed making it and reflecting on my little hobby I squeeze in between work, wife, kids, pets, and Game of Thrones. Thank You for your time. I will hopefully be back soon with updates as this project evolvs but being in retail and it being the time it is I may not have a day off for a month or so. Wish me luck. Update Installed system and did a little quick detail work with some fluorescent gel pen. Also updated keyboard to a Masterkeys Pro S. Color and photo quality kinda suck do to my phone camera
  21. HI again! So that time has come where me and the better half have come to realise that living with a Thermaltake X9 is fantastic if you live in a mansion!. However, living in a normal home it really is annoying. As much as I love the build, the case, the looks and the time I put into it, I just get annoyed at the fact I can't sit against my desk properly, can't get my knees beneath it either. It also restricts what desk we buy so to that end its gonna be getting stripped out and one of the loops is going into my new build! Step aside Thermaltake X9: and into the ring the INWIN 303! I've been thinking of doing this for a while now and I was going to use the Thermaltake View 21, but they aren't planning a white edition and I really don't want to spray another PC case in November/December (in the house, white speckles everywhere!). The case is obviously much much smaller than the X9 so I will be dropping down to one loop for the GPU, CPU and Mobo VRMS. The basic stuff in the PC is getting transferred over, however I can only fit one of the Mayhems Havocs in the case, which will be in the bottom (very snug!). So my new shopping list (all ordered tonight) is: INWIN 303 White Edition - https://www.scan.co.uk/products/in-win-303-mid-tower-computer-chassis-tempered-glass-window-mitx-matx-atx-usb-30-white Crucial MX300 525GB - https://www.scan.co.uk/products/525gb-crucial-mx300-25-ssd-sata-iii-6gb-s-read-530mb-s-write-510mb-s-92k-83k-iops-retail Alphacool XT45 360mm Crossflow (cosmetic reasons) - https://www.scan.co.uk/products/alphacool-nexxxos-xt45-full-copper-x-flow-360mm-copper-chambers-brass-threads-m3-thread-black Braided Sata Cable - https://www.scan.co.uk/products/cablemod-sata-3-cable-30cm-red EKWB 204mm Res tube - https://www.overclockers.co.uk/ek-water-blocks-ek-res-x3-tube-250-204mm-wc-9am-ek.html EKWB White res cap - https://www.overclockers.co.uk/ek-water-blocks-ek-res-x3-top-white-wc-835-ek.html So that lot will be added to the current: Intel i7 4790k 32gb Kingston Hyper Fury X Asus RoG Z97 Ranger Samsung 256GB XP941 m.2 SSD Seagate Barracuda 1TB HDD Palit 1080 Gamerock Premium with EK Block and Backplate Fractal Design Newton R3 1000w (overkill, but it was white for the X9 build and I had SLI) EK Supremecy 1x Mayhems 360mm Havoc (the other + the Alphacool UT 60 240mm will remain in the X9) 1x EK DDC 140 X-res/pump combo - will spray the bottom housing white Now my last point to ponder is whether to go white or red coolant for the loop.....
  22. A couple of months ago I put together a test bench that I could use for testing old hardware from my eBay business. It consisted of a Pentium 4@2.66Ghz, 2GB of DDR RAM and an Nvida FX 5200 graphics card. It was pretty crap, but all the parts came in a joblot so I just had to slot everything in and I was good to go. Here's a picture of it if you're interested (WinXP ftw): However last month I decided to give it an upgrade, so I bought a cheap 775 motherboard off eBay that came with a dual core CPU (It was nothing special, just a cheap foxconn board and a pentium dual core). When I bought that motherboard I remembered watching a video about a 771 to 775 mod that allowed you to use some of the older Xeon CPUs in consumer 775 motherboards, and I had the intention of replacing the pentium with a quad core Xeon later down the line. In the end though I ended up buying the Xeon (an X5450) and the converter sticker on the same day. When all the parts arrived it didn't take long to put it all together. The most nerve-racking part was cutting the tabs on the CPU socket so that the Xeon would fit. It took me a couple of tries but eventually I cut enough off (A quick tip if you plan on doing this mod is to buy a cheap 775 CPU (I just used the pentium dual core) to use as a guide, so if you do screw up all you risk losing it a cheap CPU). After putting the converter sticker on the CPU (The mod requires a sticker to short some pins on the CPU for it to work), I slotted it in the motherboard, put on the cooler and... it didn't boot. I proceeded to waste several hours wondering why (I even brought in a projector from the other room and had that set up as it was the only other portable display I had that had VGA), but eventually I found out that it was my own stupidity. I had put the sticker on upside down - *facepalm*. So after putting on a new sticker the right way round (Thank god I bought two), the system booted up! (Yay). Currently It's still just sitting on a motherboard box, but I plan to get/make a test-bench case at some point in the future. Here's the full spec list if you're interested: CPU: Intel Xeon X5450 GPU: Whatever's lying around, currently an Nvidia 6200LE RAM: 1.5GB of DDR2 (I desperately need to buy more RAM) Motherboard: Foxconn G31MXP 775 Motherboard PSU: Generic Dell 250W Power Supply HDD: 80GB IDE Maxtor Hard drive (I'm gonna get an SSD at some point, this was just the only drive I had at the time) OS: Windows 7 Other: There's a sound blaster card in there at the moment, but I was just testing that out. And here's some pictures: So yeah, that's my testbench. It's pretty bad, and the cabling is a mess (Not much I can really do about that atm, and the PSU has really short cables so it's hard to manage them at all), but it does what I need it to do. The main things I want to do to it next are: Buy an SSD Get more RAM Change the GPU Buy a new power supply Change the motherboard Anyway, if you read this far, then thanks for taking a look! I'd love hear your feedback and also to see your test-benches (I'm sure they're better than mine)
  23. Hello Everyone, I wanted to tell you guys a little bit about my build, as i am looking to make some upgrades soon and I am always open to feedback! So here we go! Intel i5-3570k 3.4 Ghz (4 Cores) 16 GB of G.Skill Ram Gigabyte GTX 980Ti 6Gb Ram Windows 10 64 Bit 3 TB HDD (can only use 2Tb) 512 GB SSD (OS) 3 BenQ 24in 1MS Gaming Monitors (Currently running 2 because i moved and lacking space) Razer Blackwidow Chroma Keyboard Razer Deathadder Chroma Mouse Any idea on what you think I should upgrade first would be much appreciated. I am currently debating about either going with the Intel X series of KabbyLake or the AMD Threadripper. I have always gone with Intel. So it is really a hard debate for me!!! Can't wait to see what your thoughts are!
  24. *LONG THREAD WARNING* So let me start of by saying, gosh darn has it taking me waaaay too long to finally join these forums! It's good to be here finally Like many on here, I've been watching Linus from the very early days on NCIX and oh boy is it awesome to see him grow and form LMG. So a bit of background info. I started building PCs around 10 years ago, when those crappy IDE cables were the fastest connection and black case interiors weren't a thing. My first build was terrible... molex adaptors everywhere, cable management wasn't in my vocabulary and the case... my god. Even though it looked terrible by today's standards, I was really proud of it. AMD Phenom X3 build circa 2009 (yeah.. I'm still not sure why I didn't get an X4 chip) It's amusing to look back and see the severe lack of effort by manufacturers to have complimenting colours schemes at the time. The modding scene from what I remember was pretty huge though! I even had a HD3450 in that system for quite a while, I still have it somewhere.. Over the years and a few PC builds later, I was still always having to just botch together systems as I could never afford a complete full new build. I'd always have to pull an old drive from my last PC or make do with my current case, skimp on a power supply and buy a dodgy '700W' one with ketchup and mustard cables I'm sure many can relate to this, but I was still happy. My main system for around 7 years was my trusty AMD Phenom II 955 black edition and a HD4890 (upgraded to a HIS 6970 at a later point) This was built not long after owning the Phenom X3 system. However, Intel was about to hit AMD hard with their announcement of their soon to be game changing i7 line of CPUs. As soon as the i7s came out I wanted one. The 960. That was the CPU to have, however like today, they were really expensive and I could not afford one, nor the motherboards - heck I couldn't even afford a proper PSU! (above) A rather unsightly interior on one of those awful huge turbine cases with a piano gloss finish. Honestly the worst case ever made. I highly recommend to new builders to never ever go cheap on a case! (below) My efforts for a black interior in an Antec 300 case (legendary case!) For some reason, I decided to go crossfire...If only the PCI slots had that much clearance nowadays haha! I did love these reference coolers for the ATi cards around the 3000 - 4000 series cards. ------------------------- Over the years I flirted with upgrading my system to the i7 I really wanted. The 4th gen i7s was when I almost pulled the trigger initially, but never did. Then the 7th gen approached... During a CSGO game my power supply blew up. My PC was out of action for around 8 months while I was in between work. I also use Mac for my work so a replacement PSU wasn't urgent (although I did completely drank to silver... *shudder*..) I ended up picking up a Corsair CX series PSU to replace my noname cheapo Chinese version. ------------------------- Thanks to the HTC Vive (and lots of video editing) I ended up picking myself up a Strix 1070 to make my system VR ready (still running the Phenom II amazingly and this was my first new card since the 6970) However, due to my own stupidity I thought GPUs wouldn't be bigger than the huge HIS 6970 cooler, but I was wrong. The Strix 1070 was literally about .5cm too long for my Antec 300 case ... sigh. So a quick trip online and a Corsair 450D later, I was up and running. I was rocking some 'baller' (as described by Luke in one of the scrapyard wars episodes) OCZ Gold RAM. Ah.. OCZ. I had all my 4 slots taken up with only 8GB of RAM and wanted MOAR!! So I ordered a 2X16GB kit of RAM from Corsair. ONLY TO REALISE MY BOARD WAS SO OLD IT COULD ONLY TAKE 4GB STICKS MAX. *RAGEQUIT* This was the point I just said f*ck it. This was the time to build a new system... I wanted this to be an accumulation of all the things I learnt over the years. The patience and desire to create some I've wanted to build. As a creative and artist, I wanted something that wasn't only a workhorse, but a piece of art in it's own right. and here it is. Progress -> Near Completion You can never have too many photos of these Dominator sticks. Man are they sexy. This was the 'completed' build. A system that worked but wasn't a finished build in terms of aesthetics. Upgrades below included: - Swapping out the CX series for the AX860i (I am and was aware of the problems people had with this model) - Getting aftermarket / custom sleeved cables for the PSU - Replacing all the fans with Maglev series ones The updated build. Looking cleaner, however the cables weren't making me smile.. so I checked out CableMod for some cables. To my surprise they didn't float my boat for what I wanted, amazingly Corsair had pretty much the exact cables I wanted and at a lower price than what CableMod were offering. I went with the Metallic Graphite set, which was exactly the look I wanted I took quite some time picking out components that would compliment each other. I didn't just want to match up blacks and whites, but match metals, finishes and show a class of engineering. I absolutely love the turn companies have made this year with muted and monotone colours schemes. This allows the builder to be more creative in then filling out the build with whatever secondary colour they want. I love how there is only a splash of red from the AX860i. It was important for me on this build to not have anything in this system that would detract from this overall aesthetics when it was off *cough* mustard and ketchup cables haha! The cables were looking a little crazy. I totally forgot to order cable combs with these which actually ended up being the best thing that happened. I discovered these gorgeous billet aluminium ones over at MNPCtech. It was so strange finally ordering something from Bill as it was him that first ignited the PC building passion in me 10 years ago. I remember watching all his crazy almost MTV mod videos, featuring PC cases with airbrushing effects... ahh.. Good times! A little tidier... Added some Corsair RGB goodness - and yes, that really is the keyboard I still use. PS2 2001 baby *disclaimer the 24 pin is wonky because the back panel isn't on. Long story...* (I did also check out the CableMod ones of these too, but got increasingly annoyed with not being able to find a video or photo showing the white. In nearly every shot the camera's white balance was set wrong and wasn't showing an accurate colour... sigh. I finally found a video featuring these Corsair ones showing it was a cool white which sealed the sale and ended up also being cheaper!) The monotone look of this build comes to life with a splash of colour from the RGB. It really changes the feel of the build. Some colour experimentation. I have a whole colour pallet and ideas exploration on my Instagram for those who're interested. Being a photographer, aesthetics and colour are important to me. Have a look up of the colour wheel that has been around for literally centuries, it'll give you a basic breakdown of complimenting and contrasting colours. --------------------------- SO This was my 10 years in the making. I always wanted that core i7 and a rig that I could be proud of. I always wanted that neat system with tidy cables and overkill written on it. So here is my system, Purple Reign (albeit more magenta, but f*ck it) *DISCLAIMER* The thing that I know people will love to point out and ask, is the strange GPU combination. I know, it's not the conventional setup, but from the initial VR upgrade I ended up having a 'spare' 1070. The matching aesthetics (disregarding the difference of cables) was too tempting not to try. The 1070 will probably go in a build for my other half for her own VR rig and I'll go SLI 1080Tis and a custom water loop HOWEVER, the current issues with SLI and VR put me off. This is also not just a gaming machine. I do heavy editing workloads in both Photoshop and various motion graphics and video editing suites. So, as much as this would be overkill for just gaming, I'm also a full time working professional ;-) Many thanks for checking out this super long post and reading through my journey <3 Current Specs - 7700K @ 5Ghz - Corsair 450D case - Corsair 32GB Dominator Platinum LE Chrome RAM - Corsair H115i AIO cooler - Corsair Maglev fans - Corsair AX850i PSU - Corsair Metallic Graphite cables - Samsung 850 Pro 500GB SSD - Asus Strix 270E motherboard - Asus Strix 1070 - Asus Strix 1080Ti - MNPCtech billet aluminium cable combs
  25. Greetings, Before I state the specs of my PC I think it is important to outline the motivation and purpose of the build. I am building this PC so that I can experience gaming on something other than a laptop that struggles to play at 900p. In addition to the gaming aspect, the build is focused on productivity as well as longevity. Here is the part list: CPU: Intel Core i3 8100 GPU: GTX 750 ti 2GB OC Edition Mobo: Asrock Z370 Pro 4 Micro ATX PSU: EVGA 400W Memory: 4GB G.Skill NT 2400 HDD: 1x Western Digital Laptop 1TB HDD (salvaged) Case: Rosewill SRM-01 In the future I will buy these parts: GPU: GTX 1060 Memory: 16-32GB This parts list is tentative as I have only purchased the case,PSU and a extra fan so far
