17yo, am attending my local career center/academy (in fact I am by far the most intelligent in IT for my school's class of 2021) for PC repair, IT, and networking. My forte is 100% PC hardware. Despite the fact that I have only built 2 PCs in my life (my first was a piece of trash looking back), I have been studying hardware in depth for around a year and a half now. (Steve Burke from GN, Moore's law is dead, and AHOC are very helpful ) and with the exception of PSU cables, I could prob build a rig blind just from my knowledge of PCs. My knowledge of PC hardware is much more depth than breadth. (As in I haven't taken a complete Comp Sci course, nor do I understand programming one bit, but I am trying my best to learn the low level complications of motherboards, RAM, GPUs, etc.) However, I am kinda poor and just working with high parts is still a dream. This is going to be a problem, right? I came here looking for advice on what kind of jobs I should look for in the future (after a low level IT or PC technician job) and what kind of certifications I should get to get there. (I have heard that in IT, for the first couple rungs up the "ladder," certifications are worth a lot more than a college degree in CS. Correct me if I'm wrong.) A lifetime job as a PC technician would be great, but it won't pay well after long and while not a dead end, could feel like it because I don't know of similar jobs that are better paying. Anyone that actually builds PCs all day, creates parts lists, etc. for a living, please join this conversation. Advice here could actually make a big difference in my life, so genuine knowledge and advice is greatly appreciated.

One of my teachers recently has started recording videos on his phone pointed at the screen, he says he can't do google meet or zoom due to a slow Internet connection and he is also on a low end chromebook. I offered him to do a custom OBS install on his Chromebook but he says he cant because the video files would be too big and the storage is to small. I can't think of a solution myself however I am trying to find some sort of education subsided wifi in the UK, please, please can we all do something because I honestly feel bad for him and I don't know what I can do to help. Thanks for reading

I am in need of guidance, fellow Sea/b/ass/tian/s Sebastians. I am on a long, long journey, and this is only the beginning. To start, my long term goal is to be a cutting edge genius beyond what even Elon or his child could hope to become(shoot for the moon, and all that). Short term goal is to become at least as knowledgeable as the most knowledgeable sys admin(and as wise). Shorter-term goal is to gain at least 3 tech certifications in the next 2 years, begin an entry-level IT job, and rise to at least a $70,000 annual pay rate within, at most, 2 years, due to my level of value. No need to worry about the time frame; I use SuperMemo(super-memo.com, NOT supermemo.com. I used to use Anki, but switched due to superior algorithm and much better long-term application.). Good ol' Musk said it best: And so I must master the complete fundamentals before mastering the advanced. There are so many different things to learn, I frankly just can't figure out what I need to learn first. I guess everything CompTIA+ is obvious- oh, I do need to say, I'm not meaning to come off as arrogant or pretentious, if I am coming off that way. But, well, where do I start? What educational path do I follow? And I would like to thank @LinusTech for inspiring me to pursue technology, as he has many others. ... I know I'm not the best at speech or writing, but... Thank you for your help, in advance.

I will be giving a speech about online education and what the means for the future. Any Ideas on good points I should cover. I am trying to keep the politics to a minimum. I though about talking about free education through Wikipedia and YouTube. Does that sound Good? Thanks

Hey guys, i got a PC for gaming at home, but i need something mobile. I got a Macbook Pro 13" (Late 2016, without Touchbar) and i think about switching over to a Dell XPS 13. I study computer science and really like the Macbook, but the Keyboard fucks me up every time I use it. The feel is okay, but it's way too loud. I also think windows could be better for everything i have to do in my during my studies. Does anyone have recommendations or mabye experiences with the Dell XPS 13? Would you recommend the XPS 9370 over the 9360?

A BBC Trending investigation has unveiled 1400 videos, accounting for more than 700 million views that has advertising for Edubirdie, which is a Ukranian based service that sells essay writing services. According to the report, while essay writing services are not illegal, students that submit work they have paid someone else to write may suffer severe penalties. It is a bit harder for YouTube to monitor for these videos in that they are not ads paid to be played on YouTube directly, but more content creator ad spots contained within videos. YouTube's response so far has been to say that: and that: As for Edubirdie, they state: BBC Article: http://www.bbc.com/news/education-43956001 What is really disturbing to me on this is that there appear to be YouTube channels run be minors who are promoting this service and some of the YouTuber's are promoting the service as a way to Of course, the one funny thing is that the BBC ordered two essays through this service, opting for the written from scratch: Still, I find the advertising of these kind of services disturbing and am not really sure on the best way for YouTube to address this as an issue... If YouTube takes a heavy handed approach, they might revise their guidelines to begin banning third party ads within videos as the 'easiest solution'. My personal preference would be to give these content creators who post videos with these ads a three strike policy, where if they receive three warnings on these kind of ads being within their videos, then they're banned. I have a feeling that this is a bit more complicated though, considering that, for minors at least, the parents should be paying more attention to what their kids are doing online, especially if they are paying for a service...

I got into the world of reproduction video games. I make SNES games. I really went down the rabbit hole here and to sum up I've got the cost down from $30 if I just buy everything and assemble it but I'm at $11 if I go straight to the manufacturer and buy from them. The problem I've run into is the one piece I'm not getting straight from the manufacturer is the PCB and the pcb makes up for $5 of that $11 for an SNES reproduction cartridge with package. It is really making me angry because the joy of bringing down costs is amazing. For example the biggest expense before the PCB was ink but I found a chinese company that sells ink refills for my printer that brought down my ink costs 18 times from 0.90c/ml to 0.05c/ml. Now my biggest cost after the pcb is paper. The problem with the pcb is if you buy it yourself there are 3 different options and they all have different components. One has less capacitors and chips than the other, is 50% the size, and is 25% less expensive. But the reason why I want to go to school for this is I want to solve a problem in the market and design and sell my own pcbs. The problem right now is if a game has a special processing chip it cannot be put on any of the existing SNES pcbs on the market. To get one of these games on a reproduction cart is you either have to buy an expensive flashable PCB for $23 or get a donor cart by finding a crappy sports game that has the special processing chip and same pcb layout and rewrite the desired ROM over the crappy sports game and print up a new label. There aren't many games that have these special processing chips but the most desirable games like the Squaresoft RPGs and late games from 1995 on pretty much all use some kind of special processing chip. There are good games that use no special processing chips though... the biggest example is Super Metroid but FF3, Chrono Triger, Super Mario RPG, the Megaman's all use special chips... just to name a few. I want to basically emulate these old proprietary processing chips from the 90's on a cheaper and better chip made from the present time. I want to learn if it is possible to write these special processing chips onto one chip and to determine which chip it emulates by soldering jumpers on the back of the pcb. If I can learn how to do this I can make one pcb that can accommodate every type of SNES game. I know it is possible to emulate these chips because all ROMS work on emulators and these emulators have to emulate these processing chips... I just don't know if its possible to program a chip with multiple chips and switching between the layout with jumpers. So as it stands right now I'm trying to learn the science behind pcbs and electronics so I can learn to make my own. I bought the DIY Electronics book bundle from Hunblebundle yesterday for $15 and I'm currently reading Electronics for dummies. I have a friend who had a degree in the field I'm considering going down... electronics engineering. He dropped out in his 2nd year but he's giving me all of his text books. I'm going through Khan Academy to reteach myself mathematics... I've amassed 1.7 million energy points... I started at pre K math telling how many cows are in a picture and the time on clocks and as I type this I'm up to grade 11 in Algebra 2... I'm learning binomial theorem at the moment. School starts in September so I need to be ready. Here is the degree I'm taking: https://www.cbu.ca/academic-programs/program/electronics-and-controls/ I am a Canadian First Nations so this is all free. But part of the problem is I am half white and the grandparents on the white side set me up with something called an educational IRA which pays for my tuition, school supplies, and all that stuff related to my education... I'm basically covered for university two times. The problem with this IRA though is when I went to university the first time I could never get any of this money because to get it I need receipts and I send in for reimbursement but my First Nation's status was paying for everything so I could never use this money. Since I'm getting a degree in Electronics Engineering could I buy a bunch of electronics like TV's, Computers, and Smartphones and write them off as an educational need since I am technically in electronics engineering? The reason I want this degree is so if I fail in my dreams in the video reproduction world I can be 'well that sucks, at least I'm a certified electronics engineer.', and I can open up a repair shop and follow the path laid down by the likes of Louis Rossmann. But what kind of jobs can be gotten with a degree in Electronics. Also... this may sound weird but is it unethical to use my minority status to better my chances at employment in the tech sector? I'm sure Native American is a pretty desirable check box on the diversity list... would I be wrong to abuse this or should I just say fuck it and lean into it? As I said I'm half white but I look first nations. I was raised in an affluent white neighborhood in the united states and didn't find out I was actually first nations until I was 7 years old when my mom, who was adopted as a child, hired a private investigator to find her biological parents and it turns out they were both full blooded First Nations from Canada. What I'm getting at is biologically I am a first nations but culturally I am anything but and actually have a hard time fitting in with my new (real) family. If I'm being perfectly honest I didn't move here to get closer to my roots... I moved here to cut costs. I'm in a quandary here and could use some advice.

Hi all! I have an idea that id like some advice on form the technical perspective. Though im decent with desktop hardware, im more familiar with gaming, coding is completely knew to me. I want to take basic technology to a few villages in Africa and basically start a coding school. Reason being, i feel it would allow people to develop skills that a r necessary for the future of humanity and give them a skill they can perhaps earn some money with either in the city or by selling their services over the internet (think Fiverr) The basic idea is we set up a room with free wifi and basic computers where students can be taught the basics of coding and then can explore computers and programming themselves. There are many challenges with this idea, least of which i the funding (seeing as im a student money isnt exactly easy) My questions are thus What is the cheapest type of computer that can be used? Would something like a raspberry pi work for this kind of basic activity? Do i need any special programme or environments for coding? Thanks for any help and advice guys, like i say this idea is very early in the making so let me know if you think its stupid, but also let me know why lol.

Hello, what I am trying to discover is if their is an alternative to what Adafruit IO does that could be hosted locally on a server. My instructor is wanting to setup a server here at the college to allow for additional testing and more long term projects that could be performed. I have taken a look at Node-RED but I would like to hear other opinions on the matter. Thanks, SgtKilgore406

I'm looking for a laptop for a computer teacher. They do basic programming, web development, and most importantly, light video editing, as well as being an all-around above average user. They are often hooked up to a projector as well. If possible, triple display support would be cool, so they could work on their laptop with an external display, while running the projector simultaneously. Something along the lines of the Acer Aspire E 15 maybe. Requierments are: LAN port HDMI port (additional vga would be nice, but not necessary) 8 GB of ram Portable (they are carying it back and forth to school every day) around 15 inch screen long battery life Looks decent (aka, not an obviously gaming laptop or ugly brick) Under 600 USD Any recommendations? Any advice for or against the Aspire E 15?

Can you study electrical engineering? Computer science? Nuclear science? Chemistry? Physics? At certified US colleges/universities, that is? I heard that some majors were restricted because of US-Iran relations.

So im looking for a cheap laptop for school. My hp pavillion laptop with a 5400rpm hdd isnt cutting it, it takes almost a whole minute to boot and for school work that needs to be done quick and snappy it wont cut it. Iv been screwing around with a single core (yes you heard it right) amd si-semphron toshiba sattelite from 2009 that my mom had, iv put atleast 5 diffrent os on this machine and it absolutely sucks. I loaded chromium os on it and it worked, sort of. It did general stuff fairly okay but The battery life is crap, and the hdd is REALLY slow. But i knew i had to get something new when it OVERHEATED in class. No joke, i was using google docs on multiple tabs (which probably murdered the network card) and it started to become hot to the touch. I thought it would be okay but then it shut off due to a "thermal event". It still works but it still gets hot, bad battery life ect. So now i need a new laptop So im looking for a "Very" cheap laptop. Im saving for a desktop that im building by christmas so i dont want to spend anymore than 50$ on a laptop. I want atleast a dual core processer (think celeron) with atleast 2 gb ram, and an ssd. Im ok with used stuff. I dont care what os it has because i can put chromium on it or load it with ubuntu or some other linux distro. Please dont give me any ebay links or anything i just want a product not a sale. Any advice is welcome

So I have been getting into networking more and studying for the comptia networking exam, but I something keeps bothering me. It comes down to 2 rules of networking below. - So I understand that a segment for a network can only be 100 meters long (~300 ft), however when you go to leave the network and go to communicate with anything on the "internet" does that rule still apply? Is their repeaters on every couple of telephone poles? -I understand that Cat 1 is classified as standard telephone wire, so is that true for the wires hanging off of telephone poles? if so how does it not bottleneck all the time? or is that classification for the wiring that runs through out a building, that eventually terminates at the network termination device/box on the back of my house (a gray box). In quick summary of what I am asking is, do network standards change when it comes to telecommunications and sending signals from my network to servers? The only thing I can logically conclude is that these networking standards laid out by TIA/EIA apply to anything within the NBN on the client side. However Their are different standards of wiring that are strong enough to carry my signal and all the other local signals from the neighborhood to the closest servers that they get me to where each signal goes. I would appreciate someone with the knowledge to verify/dismiss my theory and explain how it all actually works when It goes from my home network to the telephone lines.

Whilst every once in a while universities are releasing studies, this study has me interested, as there hasn't been a related study for maybe about 2 years. Australian university RMIT says that playing video games enhances cognitive abilities as long as the games themselves aren't violent, the professor has said that teachers should incorporate them into how they teach. I at the moment do not really have an opinion, and this doesn't affect me much, but it would be interesting to see what might come out of this. Whilst the study says that using social media is a detriment to learning and might indicate that they are having trouble understanding the material and go on social media to socialise and ignore the more pressing issue. Now that might have an impact and we might see parents nagging teens to get off of facebook/twitter/etc and study. EDIT: Journal: http://ijoc.org/index.php/ijoc/article/view/5586/1742 I will attempt to get a copy of that study from the journal that it is being published in. Hello guys, I have one doubt and questions related to the servers and the situation in which I find myself. I want to start the project for training people. The goal is to educate people the basics of programming. I want to have a classroom for 20 people. My goal is to have main server in the room and that server will have installed 20 Virtual PC-running Windows or Linux-basedOS (not yet decided). Long before I was in such a classroom, but I didn't then look at how it was done. In the classroom there is a central server and 20 monitors, keyboards and mice together with the speakers. I want to replicate the same. Peripherals were connected directly into the wall in this existing slots (USB ports and VGA.) Can you help me and recommend server spec for those purposes (best buy server), which OS to use and how to connect monitors and peripherals (mouse, keyboard and sound card) for 20 people). ty

So, I've been doing architecture for about 3 years now, and it would take me another 3 to graduate (5.5 year degree), but i dont think i love it, and its really stressful, and reportedly the 2nd most difficult major at osu besides veterinarian. i could change my major to computer science, which is something i already do for money and really enjoy and get it done with in the same amount of time. im just not sure which route to take, and dont really have anyone to talk to about it, so id appreciate any advice.

Hey Gang, Here's the scoop. I am just now 26 years old, I am married happily and struggling deeply. I have not gotten a degree yet -- I have roughly 24-30 credits, one year of school basically, and a 3.93 GPA in the courses I have taken. But I am struggling. The local CS/CSE programs (which are about an hour drive from home one way) have high entry requirements, with certain courses necessary for entry. Sadly for me, I haven't taken those courses (I was unaware until recently.) This means it'll be another year of pure Maths/Sciences until I can get into the four year program. This has me graduating college at 31... I've managed businesses (I use to manage two restaurants as a sort of regional manager), and while I have a complicated background and am understanding of unique histories, most companies get a stack of resumes and I assume some HR person would look at my age (31), my lack of experience (none) and my degree acquisition date (five years from now) and probably toss my stuff off the desk, regardless of my (likely) 3.9x GPA. There's also the matter of caring for my wife. If something should happen to her, I need to be able to provide to care for her. I currently could never do that a million years. So I feel the pressure to act swiftly. I just don't know what to do. There are no junior colleges or two year programs in my area that deal with anything other than IT, and from my understanding, IT jobs are slowly being dried up and/or require more training/experience. I was wondering if self-teaching, or programs like Udacity are viable options? I don't have the 20k to drop on a bootcamp, and we're not keen on moving to SF to do so either. Do you think it's possible to self teach? Could I jump into Freelance or remote work, if I do so? Or do you think companies would be interested in a self-taught, older junior developer? Any advice? (Not opposed to negative feedback - the truth is the truth regardless of how it makes me feel. ) Cheers

Hi. I am looking at buying a decent Windows 10 laptop with 8GB RAM, 500GB-1TB Hard Drive (Preferably an SSD), 15" screen, an i5/i7 from like 2.5GHz+ and a proper GPU (we don't need any of that Intel HD Graphics sh!t here). Ideally, I would like for it to cost anywhere from $800AUD under. I am still a student and am therefore stuck for cash. I want to abandon my current MacBook. Look at my previous post in this subthread for that post. Thanks again, Alpha.

I'm posting this here in hopes that they talk about this in the next WAN show (BTW great show). A channel I watch a bit on advance technology how-to is Eli The Computer Guy. He posted a video 3 or so years ago on how to "hack" a html box to tell you the passwords. It's basically you do a inspect, and change the HTML to not hide the password. Below is a video that someone copy and put on their channel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uo6ws-h9pvA Anyways, on the 22 YouTube took down that video and gave him a strike. He has a screenshot of what they sent, and it's stupid. It basically says they are taking down the video and giving him a strike because it "encourages or provides instruction for technologically malicious activity." The problem with this is it was an educational videos. This means stuff on my channel, nearly all channels that Linus is apart of, and most others are apart of can be hit for having a 100% educational video. This also forces people who actually know how to prevent others from hacking or modding from actually telling others how to protect their systems. UPDATE: He just put out a new video. This is why I wanted to have the big tech channels actually talk about it. Again, this abusive relationship with YouTube is going to keep happening if this isn't talked about.

Alright so, I'm in a pickle here, I'm currently a University student, studying in the UAE, I'm in my first year of computer engineering but the teaching here isn't at the level that I expected it to be, anyways I'm looking to study CE in the US, what university/college do you guys recommend? I really need a lot of input on this topic so I can finalize my decision. Thanks a lot

So I am a band director, and the young guy on staff so all the tech stuff gets left to me. We have a great thing using a program called Smart Music to help evaluate our kids. Basically they check out an Ipad and and with this program they can play there music and get feedback right away if they played it correctly. We now have these special clips that attach to the kids instruments that pick up the vibrations right off the instrument. This is great because we can have multiple kids playing test at the same time and it only picks up them. The major downside is that they can no longer hear the click track that goes with it. With out the click track it makes it very difficult to play in time. My solution is to get a 3.5mm splitter but I am concerned that if I purchase a splitter it will not work with the mic input. Any feedback on what I need to be looking for in a 3.5mm splitter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for y'all s help!
