  1. I've owned so many drives over the years that no brand is free from failure for me... except Samsung... 2x 1.5TB drives I bought way back in 2010 are still in use to this day and installed in my mum's system. They've only ever been used for video storage on my mediaserver, and are now doing the same on hers... But 10yrs is pretty damn good. I think there's a 2TB WD that's gotta be at least 7 or 8yrs old too, and I've got a 500GB Hitachi on my desk right now that's about the same (it was in an external enclosure and was recently swapped for a 1TB I had going spare)
  2. I don't think it's the little things that bother people. Nothing is perfect and people are surprisingly willing to compromise... But companies that intentionally shit on their customers, who flout local consumer laws and have the attitude... so what, tough shit, we've got your money so fuck off. Those are the ones that deserve to have bad things happen to their stock price... because that's all the care about. If ubisoft had taken the issue seriously, and attempted to resolve it... I'd have been happy (at least until I actually played the game and found out the major issues)... instead they've lost a customer and in it's place created a person who will bad mouth them any time their name is mentioned... and will probably actively seek ways to acquire their products without directly giving them any money.
  3. I've got the Aorus B450 Pro with the dual bios that keeps falling over to the back for no reason what so ever... and it cannot run the Corsair Vengeance 3200mhz ram at 3200mhz at all. I have to run it at 3000mhz and of course everytime the bios falls over it resets everything back to defaults. It will probably be the last gigabyte board I ever buy for a long time.
  4. I've never understood that... I've seen some of their cases and they really don't do anything for me... BNut then I am one of those who still likes to have an optical drive installed (I still watch blurays from time to time and like to burn discs for the car still (my car has bluetooth but only for phone, no music streaming.. it's an older model)
  5. I was one of the Windows 7 holdouts... only got 10 12 months ago when I built my new system. Didn't pay full price for it off course, just bought a license for 20... I wanted Pro not the crappy version you can still get for free. I've locked it down as best I can to get rid of the crap, blocked telemetry and the MS store, removed cortana and added windows classic shell to revert the start menu to something more palatable. Also added back the windows 7 games. My media server is still on W7 Pro too, which is EOL next week... But I'm kinda leaning towards 'fuck it' on the upgrade side as it's literally a mediaserver, I don't use it for gaming, browsing or anything else really... even though it's got 16GB ram and an RX580 installed... it's still on the AMD FX platform with a budget ASUS M5 board and an FX8350. I keep meaning to get myself a Pi and mess around with it... but I've kinda let my IT skills wane over the years, so I'm way behind the curve in some areas now... I never learned HTML5 after all those years learning 4... and leaving the industry for 6yrs to help care for my late father. So coming back into it.. I've ended up in more consulting/management type roles than actual hands on like I used to.
  6. Does anyone else have a grudge against a company related to tech/gaming that nothing could ever convince you to reconsider? I'm not just talking about 'never buying an EA game because they're evil' kind of thing... But a company that has directly caused you a problem that you struggle to forget and/or forgive. I've got a couple... the first is nVidia. I've been PC gaming for long enough to have witnessed the first wave of 3D graphics cards and my first card was a 3DFX Voodoo II... sadly I never got to SLI a pair of them... But boy were they great. I then had an nVidia something or other from around 98 and as soon as 3DFX released the Voodoo 3 I grabbed one of them, and when they released the VooDoo 5 5500... I had one of them too.... sadly that was also the time of their demise and nVidia swooped in and bought up all of their IP... along with the promise of supporting Voodoo cards and customers... They lied... they hung everyone out to dry and never lifted a finger. All they wanted was the SLI patents. So I never really forgave them and it's one of the reasons I kinda heavily lean towards AMD GPU's... But I do own a couple of nVidia Shield TV boxes (2017 & 2019 models) and my tablet is the rather nice Shield K1... So I am being worn down a little... now if only they'd get of their high horse and actually price stuff competitively... I might consider a GPU at some point, but chances of that are slim. The next one is more recent... 2019.. and it's Ubisoft this time. I tried to buy the last Assassin's Creed game during a sale and for some unknown reason the version I bought wasn't the one I wanted (it was missing all the DLC)... I reached out to them and asked for them to adjust the sale and that I'd pay the difference. I even accepted that it's possibly my error and I clicked the wrong verion and wasn't paying enough attention at the checkout... We've all done it. They ignored me for weeks... I'd never actually played the game, all I'd done was launch it for less than 2 mins as I immediately saw stuff was missing. It was uninstalled immediately. When they eventually respond it's to basically say 'tough shit' you've played the game... I wasn't happy and told them so, pointed out that we have decent consumer laws in the UK and what they were doing wasn't acceptable... again they ignore it for weeks and then respond with the same canned statement telling me 'tough shit'. This is why I pay via paypal... so I open a dispute and they ignore that too... paypal refunds me my money. I update my complaint with them and ask them to remove the game from me because I have my refund. This is where they get a little shitty with me... the response is kinda pathetic and threatening with the suggestion that they will ban my entire account for daring to enforce my consumer rights. What ever drone I'm talking to hasn't a clue about those consumer rights/laws in the UK. They still don;t remove the game so a few weeks later, I update the compliant once more and say thank you for letting me keep the game after all... a few days later.. it's removed. I think no more of it... and about 6 months later, the game is on sale once more... this time even cheaper and with all the DLC. So I buy it... except it's not added to my games list... So I raise a ticket for it and am basically ignored for weeks again. It gets passed around and each time they fail to understand the issue... I've paid for it, you've taken my money... you've failed to give me the game... As the days/weeks go on, I start to get annoyed as they're doing bugger all to resolve it... So I escalate it to a complaint... it's ignored... so I send a letter to the CEO of Ubisoft UK and get one back promising to look into it, but all they do is pass it some useless drone in CS who weeks later responds with the same crap they parroted before. So back to paypal, get my money back.. Ubisoft have failed to resolve anything yet again and are nothing short of obnoxious arseholes in my book... As a result I will never spend another penny with them again. I have played the AC game though... and it's not actually worth it, so I count myself lucky I didn't waste my money... the levelling system is so stupid, you can't go back to an area you struggled with after levelling up a little more because all of the enemies auto level up to the same as you... making the act of increasing weapons/armour utterly pointless... It's like a grind that grinds for grindings sake. Even when the eventually reacted to the player backlash, they just added an option to set the auto levelling to be a couple lower than before... worthless still. So if nVidia is anything to go buy... it's gonna be 15 or more years before I ever consider buying anything from them... legitimately... not that I'd ever suggest anyone actually do anything like that of course... it's wrong... so, very, very wrong. Also... f*ck EA... they are evil.
  7. Double check the airflow in the case, and strip the card and apply new thermal paste... My old RX580 was hitting 81ºC until I reapplied new paste and it dropped 11ºC
  8. I said it could appear to be... not that it was. Including those details on a resume is a mistake for that reason... You can't dictate how another person will interpret the facts being presented. A resume is supposed to present the absolute best side of you and your experience... So including anything that could be interpreted otherwise is foolish. This is from a person who's had extensive training on how to teach people to write their CV (as it's called here in the UK)
  9. I can understand the reluctance to include it because it could have seemed like nepotism, but a job is a job and you can word your resume in such a way as to avoid mentioning you only got it because of a family member. You resume is part fact, part fiction anyway... you include only stuff that is relevant to the job you are applying for. You should have several versions of it stored that emphasise different strengths.
  10. Bought this a few days ago I'd had a price alert set up on camelcamelcamel for when it dropped below £60 and it did just that at £57... I've since received price drop alerts each day as it goes down further... it's now sitting at just £50 It turned up today, so this evening I got it out.. plugged it in... and it's DOA. So back it goes... and by the time I get a refund and order a replacement... I'm betting the price will have rocketed back up again. Typical of my luck.... I ordered two pairs of moccasins last week (I wear them around the house and for driving)... they showed up Friday, went to wear a pair today and on one a lace snapped (crappy leather one, not a proper lace and I recalled I had to swap them out on an old pair too) and the second pair were the wrong colour.... navy blue instead of black. So tomorrow I have to arrange to send back two items... and order some new laces. Not a great start to the year... but at least I got an extra Toblerone, which is nice. (It's a tradition, my mum buys me a toblerone every xmas, this year a friend of the family also got me one)
  11. I haven't played a GT game since the PS2... can't remember which one. But I do remember entering a GT tournament for the original PSX game and coming second... the only races I lost were to the guy who went on to win. We both exclusively used the green Mitsi FTO you could win.
  12. Haven't read every post, but I do follow a lot of science stuff and read articles and watch docs and so forth... so basically no expert, more enthusiastic observer. I've read and heard many times that evolution is just as unpredictable as anything else... It can take a slow, long meandering path as things adapt to surroundings and can certainly be a survival of the fittest type of thing. But there's also evidence to suggest that there can be sudden evolutionary leaps that can happen within a few generations and that give that subset of a species a massive advantage over others. As for us humans... chances are very high that we'll simply wipe ourselves out through abusing the natural world and causing our extinction... and that's before we even consider wars, weapons of mass destruction, bio weapons and mutations of diseases we can't cure. We're not going to be around to see what happens either way... unless it's a world war or something... we'll all be long gone before there's a proper self sustainable colony on Mars and I can't see humans leaving our solar system without a massive leap in technology to allow much faster travel as well as some kind of suspended animation. the nearest star is Alpha Centauri which is about 4.6 light years... and would take hundreds of years to reach even if we could increase travel speeds 100 fold... So either some form of suspended animation, or generation ships where your great, great, great, great, grandkid's reach the destination... then you've gotta hope there's a habitable place there. The problem with sending out probes on those kinds of distances isn't the time it takes to get there... but that technology increases in a way that means the probe is defunct as soon as it leaves. If you sent a probe to AC now and for arguments sake it arrives in 250 yrs.... technology increases in such a way that 50yrs from now, you'd be able to send a probe that arrives at AC in 150yrs... 50yrs before the previous one, with better tech onboard. Of course.. that's assuming that they can figure out a way to actually traverse the space between solar systems... we barely know what's outside our own... and there's still debate over where exactly the helisphere ends and there's disagreement over where and when the Voyager probe actually passed through it. I wish I could be around to see things like that... the only thing I really have left on my bucket list from my childhood is to go into space.... well, actually it's to become Han Solo and go on adventures in space... but ya know... close enough. :)
  13. I was given this desk way back in about 2008, it's a simple pine one but it's HUGE!!! can easily fit 3x27" monitors and the leg gap alone is around 4ft wide and the drawers are so deep that it's hard to find stuff in them. It's starting to look a little tired now... the whole thing could do with a sand & a stain in a lighter colour to match my other white oak style units in my home office, and some new handles. So don't knock a freebie if you can find it... things like this people struggle to sell due to the style and will often give away for free... All you need to do is collect it. So it's worth taking a look at local ads. You may even find something more suitable within your budget.
  14. You think reddit is social media? It's barely a step above 4chan.
  15. I left school in the June, was on a training course for vocational skills within a couple of weeks and had an apprenticeship and college lined up from Sept. I left the apprenticeship/college just over 3yrs later as I found a better paying job... Then I got laid off from that and spent the next 3yrs working dead end temp jobs as I could find them... and partying a lot... I was in my early 20's by the this point, so don't judge me... it was fun. After that I kinda fell into youth and social work due to some volunteer work I'd been doing... which led to me running a children's centre and being a residential social worker for around 6yrs or so... Towards the end of that I was also doing stand up comedy and trying to break into that... getting myself into debt after I quit work to pursue it full time... Ended up getting a full time job as debts and health issues took their toll... Ended up in the IT industry for the next 10yrs which is where I truly found my niche. So.. a few weeks to find a job after school... but around just over a decade to find my calling.
  16. I just use USB cables with magnetic tips... the cables can't be strained as they simply disconnect.
  17. I know I'm a little late to the party, but I finally got around to buying Skyrim... I never used to like RPG's but the Witcher 3 cured me of that... and this is according to some as good as or better. Now I just need to know what mods to install. Already added 'Enderal Forgotten Stories' which is more than twice the size of the original base game.... So what do I need folks?
  18. Definitions can vary from country to country... here in the UK downloading and infringing copyright is a civil offence and not a criminal one. It only becomes a criminal act if you upload and/or profit from that infringement. So downloading, burning to a dvd/bluray and selling them... criminal, downloading and watching it... civil. I clearly stated that I was referring to the UK, so applying a US definition to my comment is disingenuous.
  19. Built a new gaming rig in Jan 19 after years of suffering on the AMD FX platform and exhausting all possible avenues of upgrades. So new rig was R5 2600X, Gigabyte Aorus B450 Pro, 32GB 3200mhz Corsair Vengeance, Corsair 115 AIO (280mm, no RGB fans), WD Black 250GB NVME, 2x Crucial MX500 1TB drives. Sharkoon BW9000 case and some extra Corsair ML fans 140/120mm. I salvaged my Sapphire RX580 and a couple of 3TB HDD's from my old rig and reused my mouse/keyboard/monitors. Then in late spring, I got a corsair glaive gaming mouse to replace my old teknet one... a couple of months later a corsair straife mechanical keyboard, in Sept a Sapphire RX5700 XT Pulse card... and in Nov a new 27" AOC 144hz Curved gaming monitor to go with my 2 Acer 27" 75hz monitors and dropped the old BenQ 22" 60hz I was using in portrait mode. My old Sapphire RX580 was giving me issues too... I stripped of the cooler, cleaned it up and reapplied thermal paste and temps dropped about 11ºC and no more issues. That card now sits in my mediaserver.
  20. Imagine having to burn compressed carbon, to heat water, to create steam, to move a piston through a series of valves to rotate a wheel to power a machine. This post was made by the Water Wheel Gang.
  21. Downloading content is not an illegal act in most western countries, it's a civil act of copyright infringement that can only be punished with fines and not a criminal conviction... Uploading content on the other hand 'is' a criminal act. Here in the UK as far as I am aware, no one has really been pursued or found guilty of downloading some music/movies/games... only uploading them and profiting from those actions. Same can be said for those selling android type tv boxes preloaded with apps to access infringing content. Notice that I have not used the 'piracy' word once (until now) to describe the act of copyright infringement... this is because the term is one invented entirely by the media industry to make out that the act is worse than it is... it's not stealing anything, because that requires you to take a physical copy of something and deprive the owner of it... All you are doing is creating a digital copy of some one else's copyrighted work. So.. not a criminal act, a civil one... and as others have mentioned... you should not do such a thing, it would make you a very naughty boy and you'd not be allowed out to play... and even if you did, I'm sure you'd ensure you used protection such as a VPN that didn't log anything... Because you people are SMRT... I mean S M A R T. Bonus points if you get all of the pop culture references... the prize is a lower level of sarcastic response for 24hrs.
  22. I can't put the games to a specific year as I tend to buy them later on sale at around 75% off inc all DLC. So apologies if some of these are from the same year, or prior to 2010... they're in no particular order. The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt Cities Skylines Elite Dangerous Tomb Raider (reboot) Batman: Arkham City Burnout Paradise Deus Ex (Mankind Divided or Human Revolution) Just Cause 2 Kerbal Space Program Civ 5 Other games that come close to the list, but didn't make the cut include Planet Coaster, Mass Effect 3, Assassins Creed IV Black Flag, Age of Empires II Definitive Edition, Alien Isolation, Batman Arkham Origins, Crysis 2, GTA V (single player mode only), Metal Gear Solid V Phantom Pain, Portal 2 Rise/Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and any of the WRC rally games.
  23. One of the silly little gifts I got for xmas this year... Currently starting to build a collection of movei/tv cars/ships to display on a wall unit halfway up the stairs. So far I have a Delorean from BttF, Dark Knight Batmobile and and now the Planet Express Ship. I was going to buy the Ghostbusters car too (I'm doing either 1:24 or 1:32 scale only (aside from this PE ship obviously)... but had a HDD starting to fail and now need to replace it. Currently trying to move 3TB of movies onto my other drives as I have no backup for my media (it's very hard to backup almost 28TB of data) and looking at replacing the 4TB HDD with an 8TB one... So there goes the planned upgrade to my mediaserver in Jan (it's still on AMD FX hardware and Windows 7). So suggestions for movie/tv cars I can add to the list... decent ones only please... Not any of that fast and furious crap you see everywhere... things like the Bond Lotus Submarine (that I actually had as a kid and lost/gave away at some point) and the DB5 from Goldfinger.... let me have you ideas. The display shelf unit has room for about 20-25 items on it.
  24. Can we post silly stuff we got for xmas.
