The problem is one of the whole way society works at a global level - if you decide that (quite rightfully so) phones are as good as they ever need to be and no further progress is needed, and that they'd be built to last and only would be needing replacement every 20 years then hundreds of millions of people involved either directly or indirectly in the development and manufacturing of the tech around them and the products themselves are now out of a job. People who'd be interested in working in that field can't. Society currently can't deal with people doing nothing, so what else would they do? So much of the work done today is already basically pointless, good luck finding something that wouldn't be.

So that'd be the first step, transforming society in a way to actually realise the early 19th century prediction that by now everyone would only need to work 1 day a week that could technically be true, but with the big problem that then people don't know what to do, and that can have pretty disastrous consequences.

Then you better get used to paying out the nose on the order of thousands of dollars (likely a year or monthly) at the consumer level for software if you want companies to dedicate resources and time to fixing vulnerabilities and issues in legacy software in perpetuity.

Make it pump some water in a bucket before you get too excited, it's likely going to be extremely loud.

I'll get some but pretty much only if I manually click the update button after I'm done with most of those I had. It really doesn't want to give anything in advance

Also on (of course) my main machine it gets the estimate grossly wrong and that seems to only give a fraction of the credit, and can't seem to fix it... unless it's that it doesn't like you not giving it all of your resources, hmm

There are very few LGA1700 boards with x8/x8 support on the main CPU x16, but it seems ASRock Z790 Taichi is one.

Kilrah got a reaction from Fasauceome in Enough PCIE lanes for multi-gpu plus PCIE NVME drives?
16 lanes go to the primary PCIe slot, the other 4 go to an m.2 slot, and all the other slots go through the chipset and share the CPU-chipset bandwidth (PCie4 x8). How/what/how many lanes per device will depend on the mobo.

While adding a popup would be nice, I'd imagine there would then be requests to add "popup reminders" for every piece of content linked to from an external domain name. This applies to content hosted on Discord, Imgur, DeviantArt, or anywhere, really.

The reality is if you don't upload the content to a source / server you control, expect it to disappear from the internet at some point in the future. Sucks, but not really something any forum board operator can really be responsible for. Just my 2 bits. 🙂

If you look at the rest of the url the images are actually hosted on discord, and discord has switched a few months ago to making external links expire after 24h.
So posters need to actually reupload things instead of hotlinking if they don't want them to die after 24h when they come from discord.

Kilrah reacted to BobVonBob in Hardware acceleration for compilation?
It turns out a hardware accelerator for compiling would look almost exactly like a CPU. It would need to perform large, varied, sequential tasks as fast as possible, and that happens to be what CPUs are already good at.

The way we write programs makes them unfriendly to parallelism. Consider the following:
int a = 5; int b = a + 2; int c = a + b; Each line changes the state of the program, and the following lines depend on that change, so how would you break this up to compile in parallel?

GPUs are great at performing tons of small, highly repetitive, independent computations, and it turns out a lot of what we do on computers can be split up into small, highly repetitive, independent computations, but compiling is not one of those things.

Earlier ones no, but Windows 11 wants at least an 8th gen on the Intel side, and all boards that can run an 8th gen do.

Ditch the AMD card, there's a reason Nvidia is taking the whole AI market...

More seriously, get yourself a $20 256GB SATA SSD to install linux on. Usually on mobos you can choose separately for NVMe and SATA drives whether they should go through the RAID controller or not, so you could keep the NVMes there but disable it for SATA drives.

Check if it's the case on your board, it is on Intel but I don't know how it is with the AMD version.

If not then ditch the RAID altogether, RAID's not beneficial performance-wise on NVMe anyway, usually the opposite. If you want to group drives to avoid separate volumes take the middle option, keep the boot drive alone (can have both Windows and Linux on it), then group the other 2 in storage spaces.
