legacytp reacted to Zmax in OS for Engineering Student
I would go with a cheap Windows laptop. Get some free software. Just buy something that only need to last the time in school .
You may drop it, lose it, or have it stolen . Dropping a 1200.00$ Mac is hard on the wallet .
Make sure to do lot's of backup.

You dont have steer away from Macs since bootcamp works ok, but you are getting inferior hardware for the money so in demanding projects, it will be slower than equally priced laptops with other OS (or even without an OS from the factory).

What programs do you need to use?
If you want macs, you should be able to do almost everything with a vm or bootcamp on a macbook.
You can always use a school computer or buy a windows laptop if its really needed, but id just try bootcamp on your macbook.

(3) let the mainboards integrated fan controller take care of the case fans.
the R9 390 will handle its own fans - no need to fiddle with anything and no need to have software running in the background.

(1) Official AMD/ATI drivers from an official site
(2) Intel's website for said board

legacytp got a reaction from TomatoSenpai in PC for RoboSub Competition
There is a competition called RoboSub and our submarine needs a PC that is powerful enough to 3D model some parts on Solidworks (preferably 4 cores 8 threads) but small enough to fit into very tight space (Mini ITX board with no case). I've been using PCPartPicker to make some samples, but I'd like outside opinions.
Requirements:
- Low TDP (Under 100 Watts preferably but flexible with this)
- Mini ITX (or smaller if possible)
- 4 core 8 thread CPU w/ min speed of 2.5Ghz (flexible with this)
- Modular PSU (smallest consumer size possible)
- Under $500 (no peripherals needed and flexible with this)
- 8 GB of ram
- SSE2 support (if possible)
- Able to run 64-bit operating system
- Around 100-150 GB M.2 SSD

Try some of the VR benchmarks, like VR Mark Orange room, and there's also one for Steam VR.
My suspicion is the system is close to the absolute minimum... might get away with it, might not. Note the Rift has lower requirements than the Vive.
