  1. I've heard the 5800X runs hot, but just how hot is to be expected? I have one under a Be Quiet Pure Rock 2 in a Phanteks P300. After a 20-minute Prime95 run (yes, I know, it's not a perfect test) the CCD temps seemed quite high (max was 84.8°C). I found this especially odd given that the cores hit max temps in the mid 70s. Is the CCD always hotter than the other sensors?
  2. Yes, I know the timing is really bad. If I could wait I definitely would, but with the term already started, I need this stuff as quickly as possible. I'll give a 12700F build a try though, thanks. The 12700F is the same price when motherboard is factored in (more or less). I really like that the i7 has more cores, but I'm not sure how the power/efficiency core mix will work with virtualization.
  3. Budget (including currency): Around $1,300 CAD Country: Canada Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Virtualization, basic coding, (and some gaming). Other details: I find myself in need of a PC upgrade for my college program as one of the courses in particular will be quite virtualization-heavy. I don't have too many specific parts in mind yet, but I do have some guidelines. First and foremost I need an 8-core (or 10-core) CPU (I'm fine with either Intel or AMD) and at least 32 GB of RAM (64 GB if possible). I'm not too concerned about things like the case (I can find something basic) and I already have a GPU, so we don't need to worry about that. I've been out of the PC building space for a while so I'm not totally in tune with what the best options are these days, but I had a few things I was considering: For CPU I think the Ryzen 7 5800X could be a good option or maybe the i7-11700 (that's what is in the lab computers at my college). A 2+ TB SSD is also a must, and I'd love to try NVMe if that's in the budget. For the sake of size, I'd prefer a mATX motherboard, but ATX is fine too. Using this build I found on PCPartPicker as a jumping off point, I created my own build to go off of. It's not perfect (and a bit over ym budget), and the BIOS issue does have me a little worried, but I think it could be a good start for you lovely folks. Pretty much anything in there can be switched out if it would help. In particular I think the CPU cooler and PSU are overkill, but I may be wrong. I've also heard that the vendor "Vuugo" isn't great.
  4. Hello everyone! I've become quite interested in cars these past few months, and while I've learned a lot, I have some questions that still perplex me. I thought maybe some of you more seasoned car people would be able to answer them. As it stands, my questions are as follows: 1. Why is the firing order (in V8) engines so seemingly random? Why can't it be more symmetrical and systematic? 2 (connected to 1). Why do opposing cylinders in a V engine always share a crank pin? 3. Why do American companies almost never make V10s or V12s? 4 (connected to 3). Why are American cars, and especially their engines, seemingly so different from the rest of the world? 5. Why is any car with the engine in front of the driver always a "front engine" while the difference between rear and mid engine is down to where the axle sits under the engine (or something like that)? 6. Is engine torque (and maybe horsepower as well) affected by the configuration of the engine and the number of cylinders (in addition to displacement)? 7. How does one measure the displacement of a rotary engine (and does it transfer well to a piston-engine context)? 8. What's up with Subarus having such a cult following? What makes them so special? Who decided to call their performance division "STI"? Doesn't that stand for Sexually Transmitted Illness? Okay, I think that's enough. Feel free to answer as many or as few as you feel inclined to. Thanks in advance.
  5. "Tik Tok Tech Tips" sounds way too much like the beginning of a Dr. Seuss rhyme. Someone please write something with it. I'm begging you.
  6. Look at this thread. At least that's what I'm doing right now.
  7. I always find vegetables to be rather bland, and so I like the greater flavour density of meat. Animal products are also much more satisfying to me hunger-wise.
  8. People in my family use the word "router" to mean home Wi-Fi and use "Wi-Fi" to refer to internet (of any kind) elsewhere. It super annoying and makes no sense.
  9. I would personally add more RAM, as the conventional wisdom is that it's not good to allocate more than half your system memory to one thing. I ran a similar server and used a Core 2 Quad Q9650 with 8 GB of RAM (4 GB allocated) and it worked great. That said, it might be fine with 4 GB in the system and 2 GB allocated; Windows typically needs at least 2 GB of free memory to run well anyway, so I wouldn't recommend trying to allocate 3 GB or something to the server.
  10. Fair enough. Most of them are just about food though, and that's just a bit bland (no pun intended).
  11. My unpopular opinion: This thread would be more interesting and exciting if we were allowed to post political and/or "offensive" opinions.
  12. So, car people, I have a question: Is there a limit to how many RPM an internal combustion engine can run at? What would enforce that maximum?
  13. I've decided to go with the K552, as it's from a larger brand and I don't think I would ever take advantage of the hot-swappable key-switches on the other board.
  14. I found this other board too, what do you think? https://www.amazon.ca/MechanicalEagle-Multicolor-Mechanical-Keyboard-Tenkeyless/dp/B01DBVH16U/ref=sr_1_29?dchild=1&keywords=gmmk%2Btkl&qid=1617050683&sr=8-29&th=1
  15. I wanted to get a mechanical keyboard a while back, but didn't do my research and I guess my budget was too small because I ended up with a board that is passable, except for the fact that the key-switches kind of suck; they are "Jixian blues" which I learned is a really bad Cherry clone. I had wanted blues because I tried browns one time and didn't like them much. I wanted the tactile feedback of blues and the extra mouse space of a 10-keyless design. Anyway, I should have returned the piece of junk I got, but I didn't really understand just how sub-par it was and so I didn't. At the time, by budget was $45 CAD as that was as much as I felt I could reasonably justify spending on a keyboard. Apparently that's not enough though, so I'm now asking for good advice first and I've expanded my budget to $60 CAD. I still want 10-keyless, though if a normal board is REALLY good, then I might be able to drop that rule. As for switches, I'm still partial to blues, but if the only blues in my price-range are terrible, brown or clear switches would be okay too, I suppose. I do slightly more typing than gaming, so no reds please.
  16. I think this might be the new Blowey-Matron: https://www.tomshardware.com/news/dynatron-amd-ryzen-threadripper-epyc--cpu-cooler-jet-engine
  17. I use the name Computernaut for several things (though I also go by ThunderStar in a few places). It came from when I was picking a new name for my Minecraft profile back in 2017. I had originally intended to be "Robonaut" ("Robo" from robot, and "naut" from astronaut), but it was taken, so I opted for Computernaut instead. In the long run, this turned out better as shortly after that is when my interest in computers really got going. I still like the name and so it's my go-to whenever I need a username.
  18. It seems most people are not. As such, it seems I am in good company. I have never been a morning person, though I've found in the last few years that it's better if I try to be; getting up late, while amazing in it's own way, sets off my whole day wrong, I'm lethargic and have no motivation and sometimes feel almost sick, especially when it comes to having no appetite. I'm quite lively at night though, I can be wide awake at 1:00 am with heaps of energy, intense motivation, and a burning desire to DO THINGS! In general though, I try to get up at a reasonable time and go to bed at a similarly temperate hour. I try hard to get at least 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep every night (it rarely works, unfortunately).
  19. I currently have a GT 1030 (HDMI 2.0), but if I got a new monitor I would probably also get a GTX 1050 (DP 1.4) or similar.
  20. The Gigabyte monitor is really nice, but also costs about $500 CAD. I found this decent-looking AOC monitor: https://www.amazon.ca/AOC-CQ27G2-Computer-Gaming-Monitor/dp/B0862YHJ56/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=AOC+CQ27G2&qid=1610681042&sr=8-1 Still not sure if I'll order it, but looks good. That site you mentioned is really helpful, thanks.
  21. Resolution: 1080p or 1440p (I would much prefer the latter) Size: Nothing over 22" 1080p or 30" 1440p (I want acceptable pixel density) Input: HDMI is preferred, I can deal with Display Port. Refresh rate: 100Hz+ for 1440p or 144Hz+ for 1080p (though 120Hz would be okay if it were 21:9) Budget: $300-$350 CAD (I know that's not much, but we don't all pick our passions/interests in light of out financial situation) I currently have a 1080p 60Hz monitor (running it at 65Hz) and while it's a lot batter than what came before, I think I'm ready to upgrade to something nicer. High refresh rate caught my eye as I mostly play Minecraft and even my pinner GPU can push out 100+ FPS easily; it would be nice to take advantage of that. (I also want to upgrade said GPU at some point.)
  22. How much of that is from the government and their "incentives" to buy EVs?
  23. The start of this videos reminds me so much of what Nick said during the roast. "At least when Linus makes a 6-part video series the audience already knows it will take over a year to complete and will end with fake excitement" (paraphrased).
