Hi guys!  Sorry for the delay before this update.  <_<  The project is not dead.  I simply didn't have the time to finish it, but I assembled it to be able to use freenas. Except that it looks not very clean. Haha!  In fact the HDD cage is not screwed/mounted, the cables management is not done, the yellow sata cables are ugly and it is now full of dust.  But regardless of that here is a picture:

Here is a bit of an update to my build, I have decided to make it an mATX (I've fallen in love with the soon to be released Phanteks Enthoo Evolv)
Any prices with 0 is what I already have and anything with a manual price is the total I will be able to get the parts for. The Swiftech H220x will be expanded to add another 240mm radiator in the front most likely.

Some one has donated 4gb of 1333 ram (two 2gb sticks*) to save me being raped with the latest ram prices, and some one has donated me one of these.

The Intel Extreme cooler that comes with the 980x. I can only use a small air cooler any way, due to the enormous NB on the Alienware board (it's because the board was only designed to take AIO). This will be perfect, given the CPU is 32nm and 60w. I reakon it'll only draw 100w even when OCed as far as I can take it, so this cooler is more than sufficient.

    * Steam OS should be fine on 4gb. I'm not really bothered about triple channel really.

Do you think I would be that naive?

For a board to support Westmere it simply needs to support the core structure. IE - the amount of cores. The only reason, for example, you needed to update your bios on X58 was to basically increase the core support count. You could run the 980x without it, but you would only see four cores.

When Dell say that their boards support any Westmere product they mean the X58 Express chipset.

    http://forums.bf2s.com/viewtopic.php?pid=2823778

Clock speed, multi and FSB are completely irrelevant. If the board supports a 980x then it will support any Westmere hex core because they're all identical.

Edit. As for the date? the Xeon hex core was not released until 2010. This means Intel were playing with it two years prior. If you run the sample ID through Google you will find information about an I9.

Hi guys and girls. With The Dark Carnival coming to a close (one more modding session will complete it) I was going to be at a loose end. Then a conversation began on another forum I frequent about Westmere Xeons and which ones work with X58 boards.

A few weeks back whilst at my brother's house I found a box that I had stashed there a couple of years back. It was a EVGA shipping carton. Inside I found this -

It's the board out of my old Alienware Aurora. It's manufactured by MSI (look at the code number's font).

Any way, the conversation continued and I decided to start looking to see what a hex cored Xeon (Westmere) might cost. I'm rather strapped for cash so I set myself a budget of £45 which to be honest was completely unrealistic. A few days passed and I continued to hawk Ebay and then I found this.

For exactly £48. It said it was a hex cored Xeon so I put the serial number into Google, as the date on the CPU didn't quite add up. It turns out (after finding a website in China and then translating it into English) that the chip was actually a prototype I9. Looking at the date and doing a bit of research it would seem Intel had hex cored CPUs planned in 2008. However, for some reason or another they never made the light of day. Maybe it was that AMD had nothing to make it worth it, or poor support from software, who knows? either way one of them is on its way to me.

So now I needed a case. I did not want to spend any more money just yet in case it won't post (though I do have confirmation from Dell that the X58 express chipset will work with any Westmere so long as you have the 980x bios on) but I decided to spend some time digging on Amazon as I was rather excited. I found this.

For £18 delivered (half price !) so I just could not resist.

Other hardware will be a GTX 670 Jetstream and numerous left over parts from Dark Carnival. I'll probably hack the living daylights out of it to be honest.

The build will be themed in blue and black..

    More soon

Been a while since the last update (I should patent that phrase!) but I've continued working on the case in the meantime
I'd planned some time to take pictures of the progress yesterday, but both my camera and my camera skills let me down. Out of 60+ pics not a single one was decent enough to show in the logs. Either the colortemp is all messed up (way too orange) or the pic is just too dark to see the details.. Problem is I don't have a decent space to photograph my build, I have a small computer room with terrible lightning for taking photo's. Tips and tricks for better photo's are very welcome (

So for now a small update with the progress, pictures are taken with an iPad, sorry for that..

The acrylic strips in the front of the case will be lit with UV leds, in the 4th strip from the left the led is visible

With power it looks like this, in reality the whole strip is lit like the bottom half, pink/purple. The camera makes it look alot more blue than it really is.

Continuing on the internals of the case, first made a small Sketchup to see the idea before building it

So I ordered 6 plates of aluminium (493x210x3mm) and started to cut and file it. First plate I finished was the midplate

After that I started on the rest of the plates, made a drawing in Sketchup, converted it to Layer and made 1on1 stencils on stickersheets. (May thanks to Waynio for explaining this to me!)

    Cutting

    Alot of filing

    And done!

I finished 4 of 6 plates, for the other 2 I need a mobo to get the correct measurements so the plates won't touch the hardware

And I've been playing around with Sketchup a bit

    Comments are welcome

    now it is

going up to 45-50° (both CPU+GPU) under game loads. (GPU at 25°C now ... CPU at about 30°C while surfing LTT)
Also it is quiet now. Under 'office' loads it is  only makes a quiet hum, which is really only hearble in an otherwise dead silent room (and probably comes from the PSU fan).
Under game loads it gets a little louder, but then I would wear a headset anyway.

No comparision to the Corsair H60 pump and EVGA GTX 650 Ti fan, which made the system quiet loud.

The first steps in any project are very important to the overall success. The primer or foundation of your House of Kolor paint project is this first step. Our products are engineered to work as a complete system. The solvent and resin systems in House of Kolor are dramatically different from regular aftermarket automotive finishes. Often described as “hotter” our products are designed to be used as a system to virtually eliminate shrinkage. House of Kolor is designed to apply numerous coats or layers to achieve a dramatic finish. This is often described as “Looks a Mile Deep”. It is critical not to intermix other manufacturer’s products in your paint project. KD3000 is a hybrid epoxy two component primer designed to be used as a DTS or Direct to Substrate High Build High Build Surfacer, Medium Build Surfacer/High Build Sealer, or silky smooth sealer. Available in 6 premixed colors which can be intermixed for a wide range of colors. KD3000 is an industry first and undisputedly the best foundation system available. KD3000 has excellent adhesion, corrosion resistance, productive dry times, and ease of sanding. These DTS surfacer/sealers emit very low amounts of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), Hazardous Air Polluting Solvents (HAPS), and contain no isocyanates. The KD3000 Series DTS surfacer/sealers may be applied to the existing OEM finish, bare steel, aluminum, fiberglass, galvanized surfaces, and various plastics. Its tenacious adhesion, hi-build, excellent durability, and water and corrosion resistance and ease of sanding makes it a superior choice for the basis of a long lasting custom paint job.  [source HOK tec]

    - change the NF-F12 on the CPU cooler to a NF-A15
    - new modular SFX PSU (probably mid 2014)

Hi guys, I wanted to make a build log for this build but I realized that I am not the type of person that would slowly build a pc. I know a lot of people order parts week by week when they get there paychecks and go all out but instead I went to microcenter and bought almost all my parts that were needed for this new rig. Was much cheaper than newegg or amazon.

This is a time lapse build, pictures are shot at 2second internvals with my camera (not a dslr so quality is not amazing).

    I bought from MC
    I7 4770k
Gigabyte Z87 UD4H (Never a fan of red pc's but i love this board, brushed red metal look!)
    Corsair Vengeance Pro 8GB 1866mhz 2x4gb
    Corsair C70 Case
    SP120 Fans for H100

Prior to that big purchase I had bought
Plextor MP5 Extreme from MC In October 2013
GTX 770 from Amazon in October 2013
    Seasonic X 750 PSU From Newegg 2012
    H100
For Christmas I recieved a few parts for this build from my family and girlfriend

Seagate Backup 1TB USB 3.0 Drive
Lamptron FC5v3 Fan Controller (love this thing, very bright display and can finally fine tune my fans.

In terms of finishing this build
I still need to get my sleeved cables, need to get some air flow case fans.. either phobya nb eloops or corsair AF120's, step up to gtx 780. Also planning on a 144hz monitor soon and custom watercooling possibly once I return to work. This build was bought with a insurance check for injuring myself and needing surgery (thanks aflac, mom & dad)

I will update the rig occassionally when I get new parts in. Thanks for viewing. I made this post because linus has helped me so much in learning about computers.

    Hi guy's,

My build is up and running, isn't finished complete but for now it will do. Some stuff needs to be changed, any input is always welcome.
I'll be putting new updates in my op every time i progres.
For now these r the speccs:

Case: Cooler Master N200 -> Corsair Carbide Air 540
    PSU: Corsair RM650
    CPU: Intel Core I5-4430 @ 3GHz -> Intel Core I5 4670 @ 3,4 GHz
    MB: Gigabyte H87M-D3H
    MEM: 16GB (4x4GB) Kingston Hyper-X blu 1333MHz -> 16GB (4x4GB) Avexir Core Series 1600MHz Blue LED
GFX: EVGA GeForce GTX 780 reference
Sound: Creative Soundblaster Z -> Changed the red LED's to blue LED's and painted the shroud with a mat blue finish.
    Storage: Samsung 840 PRO 256GB + Samsung 840 EVO 500GB
CPU cooler: Cooler Master Seidon 120M
Case cooling: 6 x Corsair AF120 blu LED
    Monitor: LG 27EA63 + LG 22EN43
    Keyboard: Steelseries APEX
    Mouse: Logitech G500
    Headset: Sennheiser PC 320
    Speakers: Logitech Z-2300

Some pics of my build. Sorry for the poor quality but i'm not a pro camera guy :-)

The first thing i'm gonna change is the red LED on my soundcard. Gonna try and change it to a blue one. And paint the shroud blue.
After that i'm planning on doing a full custom loop, but not shure i'm gonna do it in this case tbh.

    grz

    Update:

So i finaly got to the next step in my build.
Changing the LED's on the soundcard and boy that turned out nice :-) realy happy with the result.
    Enjoy.

Need to clip the wires of the led's a bit more. this was just to c if it all worked and i didn't damage the card :-) but it all turned out fine
and it's working like a charm.

That's it for today. Next week i'll be painting the shroud blue, and gonna order my liquid cooling components.

i'll keep posting pictures of my progres.

    Update:

Today i painted the shroud on my soundcard and did some more cable management.

Next up is to do some more research on the water cooling components.
Somewhere next week the order will go out.
    For now this is it.
    Until next time.

    Update:

Small update, changed the CPU and the RAM.
CPU: Intel Core I5-4670 -> i needed a cpu for my HTPC so i took out the 4430 and bought a 4670 for this build.
RAM: Avexir Core Series 1600 MHz Blue LED -> Finally got my hands on this set, very nice match with the rest of my build. Hard to take pictures of cause they flash random. :-)

Next up is the liquid loop. Somewhere next week the parts r starting to arrive. Ordered from different websites so not gonna be here all at once.
I'm going to use my current case so thats gonna be a challenge but it's gonna look so nice when it's done.
    Stay tuned

    Update:

due to some issues at work i didn't had much time to work on my rig. Now i finally have some more time again so it's time to do some work on the build.
I had a good long think where i want to go with this. I did some measuring and i came to the conclusion that the N200 is just not big enough for a nice custom loop.
So i did some research for another case. i cancelled my order for the water components. Did a new order and ...

Here it is. The first of many packages. The Corsair Carbide Air 540.
When linus did the overview of this case i just loved it. Support for 360 mm and 240 mm rad, much place for a nice ress and pump. And a butload of cable management space.
I also got some cable sleeving material.
So keep tuned guy's the updates r comming.

    Update:

For monitoring during overclocking a second screen is very helpfull.

I got a stable +165MHz on the core and a +310MHz on the memory. Running the card at core: 1123 MHz and the memory: 3314 MHz without touching the voltage.
So i'll prly get some more out of it when i liquid cool it.

The finished build. Lol makes me regret ever go with a Micro-ATX MB
Maybe next gen upgrade don't know yet. It does the trick for now.
Some nice blue sleeved cables finishes it all of real nice.

The back-side is actualy made for 140mm but untill i can start building my loop this will have to do.

Don't need extra lighting in the case at this point. 6 led fans do the trick

Also front I/O panel cables r sleeved.

Final shot of the build before i start on the loop. According to my track and trace my rads and res will comme tomorrow.
    Stay tuned

    Update:

time to do some more work.

Let's do something about the all black front

First lets take it all appart.

    Some sanding and cleaning

A bit of paint on both of them.

    And now time to dry.

Oh god that looks good :-) really happy with the result. Could be that i decide to go a bit darker. But we'll c once it's installed.

    All together again   good result.

    Until next time!!!

    Update:

This isn't an actual update, more something i wanted to try out while waiting for all my LC parts.
Something many of us would love to do but don't want to start doing it
    So here goes.

Let's change the color on the Geforce GTX 780. I love the look of the cooler but the green light doesn't fit in every theme.

Thats wat we r going to change.

Don't need to take of the entire heatsink. just the shroud of the cooler.

Thats the part we want :-)

Just pop it out, it isn't even glued in or anything. just pres it out.

Take a light grain sanding paper and sand of the paint. wat you get is a grey/white clearish rubber.
It's just a thin layer of paint you need to take of. The rubber isn't colored so it's an easy job taking it of.

Then you take some lightbulb paint and make it the color you want.

put it back in to the thingy

Assemble the cooler again and ... done :-p

Only missing my pump and tubing before i can start building my loop.
    Stay tuned :-)
