Honestly, at some point, the products they were showing were real jokes!
Ok, you want to test real equipment, in real test scenario, but this none-sense?... It does not deserve to be taken seriously!

As I said previously, the trend in "audiophile" speaker cables is to use flat, parallel cables "to eliminate interference and distortion"... That is stupid! You just created 12 foot long antennas! Of course you will ear a difference when they are not touching the ground... because they were bad (super expensive) speaker cables to begin with and were creating capacitance with the ground!

I am talking about those stupid Wires... These would be worthy of a real test IMO to prove that they are freaking antennas and catch all the RF noise in the room!

At my workplace, the Devs use both Linux and Windows... Depends on the target OS... When working on desktop apps for Windows, in C# and dot.net... Windows is used.

Pretty much everything else is done on Linux... Since most of our dev efforts are deployed in docker, on webservers and on Linux Servers, it makes no sense to use Windows!
(And don't talk to me about docker on Windows, or running it in WSL... The experience is utter trash when compared to running it in native Linux!)

    We are setup as follow:
Pop!_OS Linux machines with 32GB of RAM and 6 cores CPUs... We run Windows in a VM through Virt-Manager when programming on Windows is needed (and we use Windows server in the VM for it's lightness and non-bloated nature!)

My role is mostly sys-OP, so 99% on Linux... I use my Windows VM only when I need to run Powershell scripts against the Azure infrastructure the other part of the business is using or for some occasionnal Excel or PowerBI stuff

Not a programmer, and I think you've nailed the reason for me. BASH scripting is very accessible, with a zillion examples out there, and all the tools are free. All of the work I've done on hardware probing tools couldn't have been done without all the free tools available on Linux/*BSD. Being able to pipe commands together, cut, redirect output - just sweet! I'm just a hack, but what I'm scripting is helping us automate some of our processes in a way we couldn't before without spending.

I was a DevOps / SRE consultant and have worked with people who use macOS, Linux, and Windows to make web and mobile apps. So no gaming, desktop GUI, or other types of develop. So my experience is going to be different from other people. For example, I know a guy who works on hardware that's used in broadcasting opera live to movie theatres. He uses Ubuntu, but his reasons aren't really the same as mine. I also have a friend who works on in flight entertainment and while her and I both use macOS, it's not 1:1 for the same reasons.

Personally, I use macOS with Ubuntu VMs that I manage using multipass (https://multipass.run), and some cloud VMs I use for dev work too. I always use Linux in my development flow because it "just works". Code I write is typically in Python, Go, Javascript, or Java and the Linux toolchain for all of those languages are absolutely first class.

Since I started my career as "programmer" in "operations" and the industry moved into "DevOps" one of the big moves has been towards reproducibility. Linux is a huge part of how we gained so much reproducibility. In the old days you'd have your windows devs running some janky WAMP stack the Linux guys have never heard of, the Mac devs would be using a stack closer to prod, but not exactly the same, and the few desktop Linux devs there were would be spending a lot of their day debugging hardware issues on their workstations.

Nowadays desktop Linux is way better, and an actual viable option. Also things Docker, and build pipeline tools such as Jenkins ensure that not only are you getting what you expect to be getting deployed on PROD, but you reproduce it on your localhost too. It's amazing.

The distinctly early 2000s pain of some dev running Windows XP trying to find out why this Python script written on a Mac is throwing errors in our Windows Server 2003 server is gone. And it's mostly because of changes to modern Linux. Improvements in Linux and open source software are why a GitHub project can just give you build instructions and know that they'll work. Modern Linux and it's core tools "just work".

What I dislike the most of this transition, is the way EA forces you to move to their broken EA App.

Your origin launcher working fine? Here is an ad for our new app that you cannot close or skip, that prevents you from interacting with settings or your games. Reinstalling origin or trying to use an older version? Nope, EA has hidden a flag/program that splashes the same ad on your screen.

I can understand depreciating old software and not providing support, but surely making a working program non-functional is a dick move.

Don't get me wrong, I looooove Linux, and I think Windows has stopped being good after Win7...
But making regular people switch to Linux is not simple... People don't like to change their habits because someone else wants them to... It has to come from themselves.
I have seen a lot more Mac users switch to Linux than Windows users... And I think it is because of the similarities between the two platforms (file structure, interactions with hardware, etc).. Habits!

There are posts popping everywhere, from Reddit, to Twitter, to EA's own help forums, about user that can't play their games with the trash launcher that is EA App.
Now, this launcher was enforced and the older (and working) Origin Launcher cannot be used anymore.

Symptoms range from: Not being able to connect, getting stuck in boot loops, getting auto-banned for no reason (and not being able to appeal), loosing entire games catalog.

People are complaining and inquiring on the subject everywhere, but EA ignores or bans them. They refuse to step back and let users use the Origin Launcher until the EA App gets fixed.
Users don't want the EA App for other reasons: Offline mode is impossible now with the EA App... You can't play EA games unless you are online.

There are users starting to prepare legal actions against EA (class-action suit), and they are still ignoring everyone! (or sending support request to the EA Help forum, where they don't respond and let requests die-off)

When I heard Linus talking about Notepad ++ I immediatly was convinced that he did not get it at all! Notepad ++ is a solution for the atrocious options available in Windows, but on linux, any included text editor beats it instantly! Gedit is one good example... I have been coding more in gedit than I have been on a real code editors... Hell even nano beats notepad ++ easily!

Linus wants to do Windows stuff in Linux... He is not interested in the alternative workflow... It is not a winning recipe... If you want to do things the windows way, use Windows! If you try Linux, or Mac, or anything else, you need to learn the OS's workflow!
Would you try to use an Android phone the Windows way?

But yeah. We need to spread the info about TeamOS. For VM usage, they really saved my sanity. But I'll never install Windows on any of my physical devices again. I got my entire household using Linux. So I am keeping it that way. 😋

I also started with Linux Mint except I chose the Cinnamon desktop based on recommendations I had read and seen in videos addressed to Windows refugees like me. Linux Mint also has an excellent user forum where newbies can get help (they have saved my bacon more times than I can remember).

I steered clear of POP!_OS, even though it is free, since it is proprietary and support for it would end if System 76 ever went belly up. After buying a System 76 laptop, I learned that their support is "less than stellar" so I lucked out there. I also steered away from Zorin for similar reasons plus I read somewhere that their kernel updates tend to be a bit behind.

When one is switching to Linux, one has to understand that LINUX IS NOT WINDOWS!, something Linus has not grasped yet and will continue to have grief until he does. The purpose of this challenge was unrealistic because there is an initial learning curve that has to be surmounted before tackling the more advanced stuff. In other words, Linus needs to learn to crawl before he learns to walk and needs to learn to walk before learning to run. Running headlong into more advanced tasks before becoming familiar with the basics is a recipe for disaster, which is the primary reason Linus is having one disaster after another.

I also read somewhere that the more proficient someone is in another OS, the harder the switch to Linux will be since so much has to be unlearned. While in no way do I consider myself to be a Windows expert, I still was amazed by the amount of "unlearning" I had to do, even though I was fully expecting it.

After seeing that Linus installed Notepad++ via Wine, I just stopped watching it since Linus still hasn't received the memo that Linux is NOT Windows. There are plenty of native Linux applications that can do what Notepad++ can do, mayhap even do more. Linus needs to learn that Windows programs do not port well into Linux, if at all, even with Wine, Crossover, etc. Instead of thinking in terms of using Windows programs or finding exact replacements, he needs to be thinking about the result he wants to achieve, then see what Linux programs will give the same result. It may even be necessary to adopt a completely different work flow to get the desired results. Then he needs to accept he has to "forget" how he did things in Windows and that there will be a learning curve for the new programs and/or workflows. Until then, Linus, and anyone else making the same mistakes, is doomed to dismal failure.

So far, I've found acceptable, sometimes even superior, native Linux replacements for programs and/or workflows I used in Windows with only one exception (DVDFab and I've found a replacement program that has been meeting my needs much of the time ) so, if a rank noob with learning disabilities like me can do it, someone with an equal or better grasp of computers as me, such as Linus (he could run circles around me) can do it.

Another valuable piece of advice for Linux newbies is to first install Linux on a separate computer and take time to fool around with it instead of just diving in. The first thing to learn after installing Linux is how to backup the installation so one can quickly restore it after borking it (and there will be many, many times the installation will become borked during the learning process; just accept it and not start distro hopping the first time it happens). Diving in and expecting it to immediately work the way you want will result in serious disappointment.

I've been using Linux Mint Cinnamon as my daily driver (heck, my only driver) for close to two years now and I still consider myself to be a beginner. I'm nowhere nearly as knowledgeable on Linux as I was on Win 7 (the last good OS Windows had despite MS degrading it toward the end) and I didn't consider me to be an expert on Win 7, but I'm still learning and have been happy with Mint, happier than I was with steadily declining Windows' OSes.

Best thing you can do is keep Windows isolated in a VM. But I take it a step further. I use a lite mod of Windows from Team OS with all the crap removed. So it's very light/clean. And just so MS has no hope in contaminating my Windows VM, I keep it isolated from all network activity.

Also, I have no Idea why people would suggest a KDE desktop to a newcomer... I've seen that in this thread and many others.

KDE looks nice and is customisable... But it is not a newbee desktop environment !!!
Just the poor visual consistency of menus should be enough to dissuade anyone trying Linux for the first time!

gnome3, cinnamon, etc are a lot more suitable for beginners...

For me, I guess it is just the age of the board (2011) and the aging filtering capacitors that don't do as good of a job to filter noise in the DAC stage...
I tried a ground lifter and it changed nothing... I was hearing the mouse move as he describes, disc activity even !
The external audio interface fixed the issue immediately.

    EDIT:
That being said, a ground lifter on the audio amplifier can sometimes help... Or a line filter.
I have seen apartments where the ground and the neutral were (illegally) connected together and that was terrible for interference in electronic equipment.

There is a learning curve when switching OS, anyways... But some distros are steeper than others. Manjaro is one such distro!
