1994 would have been 25 years ago and this system is more like 1998 and even then ultra high end. This is closer to what we ran in 2000.
 
Yes, this stuff existed in 1998, but even in 1998 it would be like buying a laptop today with 64Gb of ram and an 2Tb ssd. That hardly represents what people use today.

Our modern ultrabooks will all be in a landfill not functioning when they are 2-3 years old and this still functions perfectly at 20 plus years old.

Fun stuff. I would pull the board out of the way, epoxy the mount back in and let it cure for a couple days. At your own risk of course.
 
The Tim and thermal pads are rough. Might as well replace them while you're in there.

Maybe my screen isnt good enough, but I cant see where the mount is broken. If it is broken, then yes fix it. It will cause an issue. Plastic welding is ideal, if it is plastic.
 
Thermal pads and paste are cheap. Replace them at the same time.

Decent review of the model. Personally the problems it has are my pet peeves, so I wouldn't be interested.  It may fit your needs well.
 
Their model is slightly better specced, but the same chassis. It is likely as close as you'll get until mobile rtx reviews really get rolling in the next few months.

You kind of pointed the biggest problem out. There is nothing in the category you want that doesnt severely thermal throttle. Cooling stands do not help.
 
The razer and new xps have alot of qc complaints.
 
The new macbook keyboard is horrendous. Everything is soldered, and they are less friendly than ever towards professional use.
 
The gs65 would have potential, but poor thermals and no qc what so ever make it a worse option than the razer.
 
The zephyrus has good thermals, and the 10 series model can be had under budget. It is the loudest under load of anything so far, but thermals aren't terrible.

I mean even if they say you can repaste, the heat sinks really aren't designed to be removed and reused. They are super flimsy and easy to warp during the removal process. It is unlikely they would replace the heatsink and even more unlikely they would honor a warranty repair at this point.
 
All of the modifications carry a heavy risk of cracking the die. Definitely at your own risk and I would practice with older devices you dont care about.
 
You seem to have it backwards. By shimming the core you are halving the ability of the thermal paste to do its job by using two layers. You are drastically increasing mounting pressure and this is the most likely method to result in damage. Even if it works a thick layer of cheap thermal paste would be more efficient. Shimming really isnt relevant anymore.
 
Increasing mounting pressure when the heatsink is not perfectly flat WILL result in damage. It may help for a while, but uneven pressure on a fragile die never ends well.
 
Lapping at least in the case of a laptop is using coloured thermal grease and pressure paper in conjunction with sandpaper to restore a flat mounting surface. This will make the largest difference.

Judging by the processor that's either a 2016 or 2017 model, so build quality and thermals aren't quite as strong as the 2018 models.

The bios battery isnt soldered or welded. It's the little white plug on the right hand side above the battery with a red and black wire.

Depends on your region. Best course of action would be to ask a representative of company from your region.

I work at a large store which is Platinum partner with HP. For consumer (pavilion,...) and business (probook/elitebook/...) we can fully test the laptop and order the same part that broke down. Most of the time, it is a hard drive or motherboard. Any part is possible however. One thing to note, is that when someone wants to claim warranty on a faulty laptop, it has to be in "normal use condition", which basically means, no damage by either opening themselves (warranty stickers), broken screen, scratches or dents which can lead to the defect. When we send smartphones back to a repair center, we can get a price of we don't notice a crack in the screen or rear glass for example. They will point any defect to that crack in glass/screen or bit of falling damage and not repair it under warranty.
 
TL;DR warranty is very complex and the manufacturer will most likely notice damage and not fix it under warranty, if you have to send the laptop/etc back. MSI is a very tough one on that which can even say a laptop is dead with water damage for having one tiny dried up drop of sweat on a key on the keyboard (this has happened to us)
 
Edit: reasons for warranty:
Not booting, no screen, no backlight, HP diagnostics or Dell diagnostics test fails on a component, not charging, dead battery, ... Anything is possible as long as it's an internal hardware component, broken keyboard keys aren't covered under warranty for example.

It may be worth the drive.
 
If your stores are like ours, then it's either drive to microcenter, or settle for one of the 3 or 4 hp models walmart carries, or one of the 1-2 models bestbuy carries outside of the ridiculous alienware model they keep in stock.
 
Prebuilts are pretty hard to find in store around here.

1) Really sounds like you had a corrupted file/files during installation. Can you make a new install disk and reinstall again?
 
2) Seems pretty normal. Linus went into depth on the topic in his video about edge browser offering better battery life.
 
I know you figured it out, but if you have a torx screw really strip on you, you can work the torx around for a few seconds and use a hex key. I have to do this all the time on high torque bolts made of softer metal.

If you just got it, return it. If it is out of return policy Rma it. You should not have to deal with this.

Honestly upgrading it is not going to make it worth anymore. It is a 200 dollar laptop that can be picked up for 150 on sale brand new.
 
Whoever suggested turning it into a desktop you dont just buy a case. It is usually a couple weeks worth of custom work building a case around a proprietary motherboard, extending ribbon cables and making a custom thermal solution. Even after all of that it still wont be worth anything.

It would work fine. It really doesnt take much to playback content.
 
That being said look at your local market for older sff prebuilts. They dont hold their value and you can usually get a better deal. For example right now in my local market there are several hp 600 g1s with a 4th gen i7, 8gb of ram going for 60 each. Throw a low pro 1050ti in there and it's a decent all around entertainment pc.

I would honestly say 50 bucks is being generous. It might sell for 100 if the battery was good and it was in physically good shape.

Its sitting at 90c at idle? That is a major problem.
