Hey everyone, problem solved! The associate at Micro Center told me to buy the Crucial Ballistix DDR4-2400 RAM and after swapping that out with the Team Dark one, it works fine. So the problem was not the Motherboard, CPU, or PSU, and the wild-goose-chase of replacing the motherboard was all for naught. Thankfully, it worked out in the end.
This is kind of concerning though, because the Team Dark RAM I bought was listed in the Memory QVL on ASUS's website for that board. But I guess that doesn't automatically mean that it's supported?
Anyway, thanks everyone for your suggestions! I'll edit my top post with the solution.

Check the R5 1500X, it is better than the R5 1400 as it has more cache(16MB L3 Cache instead of 8MB on R5 1400), higher base clock and includes a cooler that doesn't suck and you can actually OC on it as the chip is 65W TDP and the cooler is for up to 95W TDP unlike the R5 1400 cooler which is only up to 65W TDP.
It is only $20 difference and in this case, it is worth it.

Yes, a separate /boot stems from the era, when BIOSes and/or bootloaders could not address the whole disk. They needed the stage2 (or 3, don't remember / it depends of the details and terminology of any certain bootloader) of the bootloader remain below certain address. Currently, a separate /boot is mostly useless.

Also, if you think you do not need to back up data in /home or want to manage it yourself (move it elsewhere if a reinstall is required) you might want to not make a separate /home. That way the free space is easier to manage (since you do not need free space separately for both / and /home).

the only partition you need to separate is /home because then you can reinstall and not loose your data.
If you have your own applications not from the repos like oracle's java, android studio etc. then you can also benefit from a separate partition for /opt or where ever you choose to install them.
I no longer use a swap partition, I think the next ubuntu will be switching to swap file. swap files are easier to manage.
I dont see any reason to put /boot on a seperate partition unless you install / on a mdadm RAID0 array.

While making a feature-rich OS like Windows, Linux, or macOS is way beyond the scope of one person, there are other things you could look at, depending on what you're looking for.

For example, I've worked with a software development framework known as QP (http://www.state-machine.com/). This I would argue contains the most basic facilities of an OS to be considered, for all intents and purposes, an OS. Albeit on a very basic level. It does provide very basic memory management, interprocess communication, and pre-emptive scheduling.

If you want a more featured OS that was built as a teaching aid, MINIX 3 is a good one for that (http://www.minix3.org/). It's a UNIX-like OS similar to Linux, though it has a different design philosophy that separates it from Linux. That is, the source is meant to be as minimal as possible.

And if you want to look at something used in the real-world, you can have a look at the XNU kernel, which is the basis of macOS, iOS, and all that (https://github.com/opensource-apple/xnu)

If properly designed, most of the assembly stuff in any of the OSes have to deal with high performance or very low level stuff. So you can get away with not touching assembly, but you should be familiar with it any way in case you have to look at it.

Though it might be better to just get a book. Modern Operating Systems by Andrew Tanenbaum is a good one.

realisticly you're not going to one man a kernel then the rest of the OS. I would start on the Linux kernel then build on that.

One of my friends has had a lot of problems with his phone, and he's looking for a new one, but is restricted to a budget. The Oneplus One would be perfect for him.

I won't personally have any use for it, but I know he would really appreciate an invite to buy it. But I suggest you give it to someone else unless I'm the last resort .

What he is probably trying to say is that it is absolutely stupid that say a gamer has to pay for Windows in the first place.

What do they get? Notepad, a calculator,a crappy internet browser, a crappy movie maker and ms paint, far from the most secure OS, just so they can play games because of the DirectX monopoly, all while playing on an OS that is full of bloat?

Mobile, PS4, Linux, Steam OS all OpenGL.

    http://www.extremetech.com/gaming/133824-valve-opengl-is-faster-than-directx-even-on-windows

If the DirectX monopoly dies, many people will have zero reason to run anything besides linux, or Mac OS if they want to go Hackintosh which costs a whole $19.99 and is leaps and bounds better for most users. Yes many people will still have to run Windows for some programs, but others will abandon it all together. I would keep a Win 7 partition for legacy support/games, but I wouldn't bother upgrading to a MS OS ever again.

The only reason I have Windows on my system atm is DirectX, and a few programs that require Windows, which is stupid to begin with anyways. The hell with MS and Direct X.

MS is scum. From the article I linked. "Microsoft has relentlessly marketed DirectX, too — and who can forget the release of Windows Vista and Microsoft’s OpenGL smear campaign? Vista’s bundled version of OpenGL was completely crippled, forcing many devs to switch to DirectX.
Microsoft has good reason to hamper the progress of OpenGL, of course: While DirectX is proprietary and only runs on Windows, Xbox and Windows Phone, OpenGL is completely cross-platform. There are solid OpenGL implementations for Mac, Linux, PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, and just about every modern smartphone (OpenGL ES). It obviously in Microsoft’s best interests to ensure that the best gaming experiences are exclusive to its platforms."

It seems as though these free messaging applications (such as this and BBM) are becoming really, really popular because of the exorbitant cellular charges. I personally have friends in India, a majority of whom use What'sApp because sending a text message is so darn expensive. I think they talked about this subject at length on The Tek too.

they market it as a 4k editing machine but only sell it with a 256GB ssd.... that's like a few mins of RAW 4K video AND it uses HDMI that can only support 4K at like 30fps or something silly. why do they use this and have to pay a fee when they could use DisplayPort that can blast 8K out and have no fees to pay baffles me.
