f*ck this shit.

I went out of my way to go to an aasp today to try to get my Mac’s battery fixed, and the guy there was just like well, it wasn’t purchased here, so bye. That’s basically what happened.

then, I got in touch with the person I bought it from and was like hey, where did you buy it. Got the place, called them, and they said that it would cost me €250 for the battery and €500 or more for the battery and keyboard. what. the. f*ck.

So I’m done. This was a final strike. I still love apple’s software, and I will miss it, but I’m today gonna put all of my Mac’s up for sale and my iPhone when my mom gives it back to me. I’m actually f*cking done.

I have an elitebook sitting here, a new battery for it is like €40 if not less. How the f*ck do you get away with charging 250 for a goddamn battery swap!!!

So I’m putting this out there now. I will no longer use anything apple, since I just cannot afford the repairs.

I’m a reformed apple zombie for now.

That suck honestly!!! Don't you have a good 3rd party repair shop in your area? Pretty sure Rossmann isn't the only honest one out there and you'd be better served at a better price, no?

Or, I'm sure if you ask for help about this, you get lots of replies on how to get this fixed.

You gonna list it for sale on the forums or just eBay?

@wkdpaul they were honest. I checked and that's about the price you pay for a new top case and battery. I can't fix it myself since the battery is GLUED TO THE FUCKING TOP CASE

    AAAAAA

@Theguywhobea marktplaats, which is dutch eBay. international shopping is annoying so I'm just gonna sell it in the country I live in.

How else did you think they were going to push Applecare to everybody? Jack the prices up for repairs for the people who don't have it.

@imreloadin if the product costs a premium, then the repair will cost a premium as well.*

*May vary when talking about companies that let you fix your own devices.

Yeah this is why I don't own anything Apple. If their prices were cost competitive for equal strength hardware I wouldn't dislike them the way I do but the fact they charge such a premium for the right to use their software, not allowing you to upgrade hardware in their newer macbooks, telling you to get f***ed when you don't have Apple Care, having horribly strict rules for Certified 3rd party Service Centers (last I checked Louis Rossman still isn't), using non-standard hardware to make 3rd party repair more difficult, charging outlandish prices for cheap replacement parts, among a plethora of other things is kind of deplorable IMO.

They could also learn to use more efficient machining methods to turn out chassis, stands, and enclosures faster instead of machining them from solid billits of metal and passing the cost down onto the users. Most people wouldn't care so long as it felt solid.

Honestly GNU/Linux has some nice desktops that can give you the Mac desktop feel for free. If you can find non-proprietary applications to replace the Apple ones you use there's no reason to stay in their overpriced eco-system.

He doesn't want to be in that program cause of some of the rules and whatnot that you have to agree to, iirc.

This is one of the reasons why hackintoshing is still a thing; if you really want/need their proprietary software, but want to have the ability to upgrade and fix your machine at will as well as having hardware combinations that Apple doesn't offer on their latest devices.

The better question is how your AASP is even allowed to be open given the current covid-19 crisis.

Mind shooting me the listing for your macbook? 😛

Sucks you have some shitty AASP's around where you live :/

@Windows7ge Windows is still the best compromise for me. Linux is cool, but until i have the funds to purchase a decent modern laptop i have to use laptops from 2010 to 2012. that's not a problem, but the wireless cards in them have poor support on linux, so running Windows is better.

@AluminiumTech not all countries are on as tough of a lockdown as others. in The Netherlands where i am, all businesses are open except restaurants and cinema's etc. you are allowed to open your business if you can maintain 1.5m distance between yourself and the customer, and many businesses including the one my dad runs allow a limited amount of people inside etc, but you can have a business open here just fine.

@SenKa i'll DM you 2 listings since i have 2 macbooks to sell. once i put them up i'll share them.

@lewdicrous A handful of months ago IIRC Apple revised their 3rd party Apple certified repair contract and Louis commented on it saying (in a nutshell) that it's better than the old one but still a pile of crap. He said a long time ago that he was willing to get the cert but the rules to abide by and what resources it gave him wernt worth it. After the revision I believe he said it still wasn't worth it.

    ok, so an update.

i was like what laptop do i use now, and i spotted my Folio 9470m in the corner of my eye under a pile of stuff... when i grabbed it it was missing a battery, 2 back panels and it was covered in dust. i found the missing parts in my room, dusted it off and to my surprise it still works totally fine.

now, it's from 2012 and heavily used by the previous owner, and i mean absolutely abused, when i got it it was covered in scratches, that was in 2018, and being my backup computer for 2 years didn't do it any favors, but hey, it will work.

i need to buy a new battery for it which is fine, the one it has now has a whole heck of cycles on it and lasts about 1.5 hours, which is workable but just not ideal, and the battery for this is like €40, not f*cking €250.

also it needs a new back panel, since it's held in my plastic clips and one of them is snapped (it was like that when i got it) which is like €20. so all in all not too bad.
