  1. You could always start with only a smaller SSD and save some money. Then you could go for a faster GPU or something.
  2. I think that's a symptom of a problem rather than people just not wanting good battery life
  3. That's basically why people don't buy i7s for simple office machines. With an SSD there's no real difference, and certainly one worth paying more for. Higher-end CPUs will only really make a difference for load-intensive tasks, as you've discovered.
  4. "We also wanted to get on board the PR train but didn't want to do the same thing as everyone else" This is stupid. Anyone reading this far into programming terms needs a reality check. All this is going to do is create more confusion about programming/computer terms, and it's not like we're short on confusion atm.
  5. Heating a card like that will release all sorts of nasties into the oven you cook your food in. Once you've cooked a card in it an oven is basically junk unless you cook graphics cards every couple weekends
  6. Don't just pull numbers out your ass. A 570 will be fine. Not everyone needs a 5GHz 8 core CPU to play a video game. You are way overestimating bottlenecks. RX 470/480/570/580 are cheap used and will almost certainly be your best bet. A 1060, as mentioned above, is also good but is usually a bit more expensive for the same performance. Maxwell 970/980 may be worth looking at if they're significantly cheaper. If you can score a 980ti/1070 for a good price they are also awesome cards
  7. Interesting. My eye doctor said VR use is fine, for as long as I want. Not that I really use it much anyway, because it feels like an intense workout for my eyes. Perhaps this user just needs to take more breaks?
  8. Try turning off V-sync and/or any adaptive sync like G-sync
  9. I was trying to lift up my 1060 Armor because it had fairly bad GPU sag. For the short term I tried to just tie some floss to it. Some gloss got stuck and I thought I'd just quickly move it with a pair of pliers. I thought it would be quick and easy so I didn't even turn off the PC. A heart-wrenching ZAP and a puff of smoke, followed by the PC shutting down. I'm sitting there with a pair of pliers, mouth agape at what must certainly have meant a dead card, or perhaps even more. To my great fortune the card still worked, though it now had a new case of coil whine. I later sold that card for more than I paid for it because of the mining craze. All in all lucked out. I wonder if that card is still running.
  10. I definitely agree frivolous lawsuits are commonplace, but you certainly don't have to be a conniving Bond villain to be held responsible for your actions. If you hit someone with your car because you weren't paying attention it doesn't mean you aren't to blame. If you make statements in an analyst call which influenced stock pricing you are responsible for those statements. Yeah people aren't perfect, but when you get paid as much as these CEOs that is what is expected of you.
  11. There is basically zero performance drop. Just plug it in and enjoy. Dual monitor is great
  12. I assume it also conveniently alleviates supply chain issues related to COVID-19. While BLM is certainly a very important movement, I reckon this was just a handy excuse to delay while 1. Supply chain is affected by a pandemic and 2. the presence of riots and looting severely dampens the excitement factor of a new console launch. I do get criticised for being too cynical, but I don't think this is just some act of good will. On the other hand, this shows that the riots are effective and impactful. Disrupting major commercial operations means that they are going to have to be taken seriously and appeased. Hopefully this finally creates positive social change in America.
  13. 1. Efficiency rating does not equal the quality of the power supply. Disregard this advice. Just do research on individual units 2. 4c/8t is on its way out. I'd rather have a CPU with more cores that will last longer and provide better performance for things besides gaming. With the tier of GPU OP is considering there won't be a bottleneck anyway 3. Depends. A 5600XT is still plenty powerful for 1080p and that money could be better spent on things like the GPU and a non-crap case or motherboard 4. Agreed 5. While an expensive case is most certainly a luxury, a shitty case dampens the whole experience. They’re loud, don’t cool well and are a nightmare to build in. Of course, there are good cheap cases. You just have to do some research 6. Many cases don’t support that, and certainly not cheap cases. 1 or 2 fans at the front and 1 or 2 fans for exhaust are just fine. 7. Ryzen 3rd gen isn’t really worth OCing with PBO. Port selection and connectivity is more important here. UserBenchmark is not accurate. Good for a very broad ballpark but useless for directly comparing GPUs in the same general tier. PSU calculators are not accurate. If you’re not sure make a post in the PSU section here and someone will be glad to help out.
  14. I'd just use Heaven. Run it for a few minutes so the fans can ramp up. That way you know if there's issues with the cooler or bad coil whine, and by the time you've done that you've also established if it's stable
  15. If it's just the screen that broke I would just get an external monitor and use it as a mini PC. Otherwise you can try get a new screen and replace it yourself. It varies from not too hard to literally impossible depending on the laptop though.
  16. I officially approve.
  17. Redragon is great. I believe Logitech also makes keyboards in that price range with mech switches. If noise still bothers you there are some simple mods, like using o-rings, to dampen sound
  18. DT770? Closed back headphones will likely perform better if bass is what your after
  19. What I'm really excited for is AI AI. Most racing games suck if they're not online, and many FPS games have awful AI that just make it a rinse-and-repeat exercise. This is an awesome demo. Imagine if you got a bunch of soldiers and had them run airsoft games where they play like they would in a combat situation. If you get enough data from them you could use that to teach an AI to think and react like them.
  20. If only there were some other form of non-passcode identification. Something quick and convenient, that didn't require the user to look at their phone. One can only dream, I suppose
  21. Seems like you've found an avenue for your own YouTube channel tbh. I don't think this is in the wheelhouse of LTT. They're not working in IT, so basic IT certs would mean nothing to them. If you have ideas for making things like you're talking about fun and interesting, go ahead and make your own channel. You could even turn it into something you do with your students.
  22. Under 60 is great. Under 70 is good. Under 80 is fine. Generally you don't really want to go above that, but many cards are rated for 90-100. Really it's the temperature cycling which damages hardware
  23. They didn't call it iGlass!? What a missed opportunity
  24. That's not too bad. Prime95 is a torture test specifically because it tortures your CPU. It's not a very realistic test of 'real' workloads, though your specific case may be different of course. Do you have very high ambient temps? Is there even pressure across the cooler? (are all the connecting points at about the same pressure) I would try taking off the front panel of the case if you haven't done so already. Then at least you know if the case is choking your airflow. Perhaps another front fan wouldn't hurt either. At very least more fans means lower rpm per fan, which then means a quieter system. I wouldn't stress too much if your temps are under 80-90C in your workload. Running high overclocking voltage is worse for your CPU than high temperatures, and it's the constant cycling of temperatures which really wears computer parts. Constant running at a stable temperature is about ideal for a CPU.
  25. Nah. The damage that mining does is really just to the fans, because they are simply a wear item. 10 days is nothing in the bigger scheme of things. Mining isn't that hard on a card (if temperatures aren't too bad) because the temperatures are constant. Constantly heating and then cooling your card is bad for it. An analogy would be engines. An engine can go very far if you're just running it at the same speed and at temperatures on the highway all day. But a car might break at 60 000km if you're doing stop/start city traffic only.
