  1. And this is why I classify it as driver assistance rather than autopilot. The human driver should always be aware of what's going on and be ready to take over in these edge case circumstances. It's great that these problems are being found and the systems are being improved, but ultimately if a car is going 50mph over the limit it's the fault of the squishy thing behind the wheel, and nothing else, no matter how fancy the driver aids are.
  2. This is exactly why I don't subscribe to any kind of game pass, only have one TV streaming service active at once (backing up what I watch as I do), and will never ever take cloud gaming seriously. I still buy music on CD's, movies on Blu-ray and games individually. If there isn't a copy of the data in my house then as far as I'm concerned I don't own it. I'm not paying for 10+ different subscriptions, which will total far more than I pay per month for what I want individually. Not to mention once I've bought stuff there's no chance it will become unavailable due to changing distribution agreements. They can't come and take my discs or hard-drive away. Should the time come when streaming is the only way to consume modern media, then I'll just become a retro-hermit.
  3. So you despise exclusives but refuse to use anything but Steam? I'm sorry but that makes no sense at all. Wanting no exclusives I get, I don't like exclusives either. Part of that means I have to support multiple storefronts; I go to where the game is cheapest. If people were to only do business with one storefront, and only use the "best" one then no other storefront could exist, nobody would use it. Everything would by nature be exclusive to the one storefront that everyone used. This is how monopolies are made, and they're nothing but bad news for consumers. Like I said, I can't defend EGS exclusivity practices, but refusing to use anything other than Steam is just as bad.
  4. I can't defend EGS, but this "Steam only" attitude is just as shortsighted.
  5. Thanks for answering that one. I also very much get the impression that both versions of the game and the Microsoft Store are gearing up for for a re-structuring: Currently you can only buy the game as part the "Digital Bundle" on the Microsoft Store, but it only has one component, the base Xbox One game which includes all the games except ODST and Reach. The Xbox version of the game has been structured to allow you to install individual components. The PC version will be released, and charged for, on a game by game basis. I'm expecting that the "Digital Bundle" will have multiple components that can also be bought individually for the PC release with current Xbox owners being upgraded to own all the base game modules. Current owners of ODST will get that module too. After the PC release the pricing structure of the Xbox version could match the PC one, with Xbox owners being able to pay for and install all the games from the start, while PC players have to wait until each game is ready.
  6. They are releasing on the Microsoft Store AND Steam. If Xbox Play Anywhere is anything to go by then owning a digital copy of the game on Xbox will become a Play Anywhere version on the Microsoft Store, and thus be available on PC once it's released. I doubt you'll be able to transfer a current digital copy to Steam though. Still, I'm happy. I own a hard copy of the game for Xbox, therefore already have DLC purchases on the Microsoft Store. I bought the digital version this morning on the Microsoft Store feeling very confident I'll be able to play it on my PC when the time comes.
  7. Fair enough. I probably should have said "for the end user" as I don't know much about the practicalities of using these API's in development. Thank you for explaining some of the intricacies that I wasn't aware of.
  8. Forgetting the fact that DX12 already supports RayTracing for a minute I actually think it's a good thing to push more developers and publishers into using Vulkan. It's just as good as DX12 and is platform agnostic, which actually makes it better than DX12 in every way.
  9. This is one of the reasons I didn't bother upgrading my Xperia Z5 Compact when the contract ended. I don't like the fact that replaceable batteries are no longer a thing (for built in obsolescence). Removing the ability to just plug in a cheap pair of headphones when I want to go for a walk or run is just stupid. If they can make USB-C as universal as the 3.5mm jack was, as well making the headphones just as cheap as current ones then sure (no way am I buying an adapter for my future phone, it should just work), but until then it seems to be a feature that nobody asked for, that doesn't actually help anyone and is designed for no reason at all but to frustrate the customer.
  10. I can imagine the demand for DRAM is dropping... because nobody is buying at at these insane prices. The inflated prices of the last few years becoming normal was always my worry. Now they're saying that there's no demand so they won't ramp up production which kills any hope of the price ever dropping. Something is going to have to give out here, time will tell whether consumers give in to the pricing or the manufacturers price everybody out of the market.
  11. I think you misunderstood me. I loved the Xperia Play, hence modding it and using it even after I replaced my daily driver. Even back then I thought the idea of gaming phone was a good one, hence I supported it. It was still a flop in the market so convincing Sony to have another go, even with recent market changes, would be difficult. I'd like to see it happen as it would probably replace my Xperia Z5 Compact, I just can't see it happening.
  12. Has everyone forgotten the Xperia Play? That was effectively the first attempt at a Playstation phone, and it flopped. I had one, it was a great little device with the slide out game pad, but it was underspecced for what it was marketed for. Still have it knocking around somewhere. I loaded a custom ROM and Kernel onto it and used as a dedicated handheld emulator for a while.
  13. Hardware: Ryzen 5 1600, RX Vega 56 Software: Ubuntu 18.04. Latest Mesa drivers, latest Vulkan patches. DOOM (2016): Runs at 60FPS locked; 1440p, max settings, Vulkan API. No option to select 2160p even though I have a 2160p monitor. Elite Dangerous: Wouldn't start. No error, no hang. Project CARS: Starts. Cannot save the game, error boxes presented whenever the game tries to autosave. Extremely poor performance; I didn't properly analyse but it was choppy as hell at default settings.
  14. Yeah, I go that too. I had to update my Mesa drivers which got me to boot the game in OpenGL. I got errors again when switching to Vulkan so I updated Vulkan too. Now I'm running the game smooth as silk. Max settings, 1440p 60FPS locked on my Ryzen 1600 and Vega 56. The only weird thing is that I can't bump the resolution up to 2160p.
  15. I'm installing DOOM (2016) now. I'll update this post once I've run a few tests.
