The memory size is the mass of water trying to get through the tunnel. The bus is the width of the tunnel. The memory clock is the speed of the flow... or could call it water pressure I guess.

xDLGx got a reaction from Kuzma in 256bit Vs. 384bit GDDR5 for BF4
As a rule of thumb you need 128bit per gig when running game-type applications. So a 3 GB card should have a 384 bit bus. This is why 4 GB cards with 256bit bus have got a hard time using much more than their normal 2 GB in games. It's also why the 6 GB Titan won't make use of 6 GB in games, it will hover around 3 GB.

Question is if BF4 will make use of 3 GB of memory at 1920x1080. I've got no idea. Most games don't, but they did put 3 GB in the recommended specs. Usually 3 GB and the 384bit bus starts to shine in resolutions above 1080p.... or in heavily texture modded games.

Just use a wrist band.... placed around your ankle. When placed on your wrist it just gets in the way.

The highest end PSUs are effective regardless of load. When I idle with my 1200i and the PC draws around 100 watts the reported watt in corsair link (where the psu claims to be 99% effective) and my measurement at the wall is only off by 2%

xDLGx got a reaction from leipero in Can someone explain to me 30fps vs 60fps?
In games with very fast movement, such as some action games, first person shooters and driving games, 30 fps is not enough to give a smooth experience. Until you've done gaming in 60 fps and you try to go back to the console 30 fps you won't fully understand it no matter how it's explained.

It also depends on the game engine, some engines handle lower fps a lot better than others.

I wouldn't call the 770 an upgrade at all... other than getting rid of the graphical errors, which of course shouldn't be there regardless of which card you've got.

You can't compare cards like that. 780 replaces the 680 and is better in every way. The number of CUDA cores is more important than the clock speed, they are the workhorses on Nvidia cards. With your way of comparing things the GTX 680 has better stats than the GTX Titan too.

The GTX 780 also has wider memory bus and more memory than the GTX 680, makes a huge difference in higher resolution or in a heavy texture modded Skyrim for example.

If you can't afford the GTX 780 I'd go for a 7970 rather than a 680, since the 7970 also has wider memory bus and more memory.

That was the original plan for the "return to res" tube, I meant to take that out via the 8-pin cpu hole and behind the motherboard. Turns it it was just too tight. The hole is not perfect and you had to do several tight bends. I also didn't have all the angled fittings I'd needed to just experiment and try things out. Due to the sound padding on the side panel it's a bit cramped back there, you can't cross any of the thicker cables and the tubing, not enough room for that.

I have plans to try again, when I have to do maintainance and take it apart anyway. With sleeved cables the thick cables will be more flattened. I'll also have purchased a lot more angled fittings to experiment with.

With future water cooled GPU(s) the loop will also be better with a second thick 240 radiator in the front, filling up that empty void.

xDLGx got a reaction from Anubikai in Is it worth buying a 7970 now?
7970 is still a very solid card and at high resolutions it does better than many newer cards thanks to the memory amount and memory bus. For high resolution you'd need a GTX 780 to really beat it and that's just not nearly in the same price range.

You can always wait... some people wait forever and never buy anything. I was thinking about waiting with my new build but I decided that I wanted to do some gaming now, not later, plus sell my old hardware while it was still possible to sell it.

I'm sitting on a 7970 Matrix Platinum now, went from GTX 580 SLI. I'm getting better performance in high resolutions (1600p monitor).

I've never made a build log before and it's been 10+ years since I put together a PC from start to finish. Also I've never used watercooling before. Figured I might as well make a log and possibly get some tips along the way.

I started today as most of the hardware has arrived.

    Case: Lian Li PC-2120X
    CPU: i7 4770K
    PSU: Corsair AX1200i
    Motherboard: MSI Z87-GD65 Gaming
RAM: 16gb (2x8) Corsair Vengeance pro 2400 MHz
GPU: Asus HD 7970 Matrix Platinum 3GB
This might be temporary as I'm selling my two GTX 580 and need something now while waiting to see what the HD 9000 series will bring. This card also came with a small discount and 8 games :D
    HDD: 2 x Intel 520 240GB SSDs + 1 x WD Black 2TB
Optical: Janking the DVD or Blu-ray from the old PC later...
Cooling: XSPC D5 Dual Bay Reservoir/Pump Combo, XSPC Raystorm CPU block, XSPC EX360 rad, black chrome fittings, 3X Corsair SP120 Quiet Series
Misc: Bitspower Aluminium Mesh Radgard II 360

    Up in the air hardware:
Soundcard: Not decided if I should get one yet... Xonar Phebus looks interesting.
Misc: Thinking about temperature gauges in the front panel and lights inside but we'll see about that. Also want to sleeve some cables but that'll happen later. I want to use this machine before my vacation is over.

As my first watercooled PC ever I'm starting with just the CPU but if all goes well I'll expand to cooling the GPU(s) later, maybe once it's time for loop maintenance.

For now it will be a simple loop with the 360 rad in the roof of the case and the outlet of the rad going out via the 8-pin hole in the backplate and back to the bay res while hidden by the motherboard trey. I also plan that this will be the lowest point of the loop and place some drainage option there in the back.

Anyway, only things I've really done today is a quick test boot to see that the hardware isn't already broken and started sorting through all hardware and planning the build.... and screwed some stuff together.

    Problems I've run into:
    1. The turn from the radiator to the 8-pin hole is very tight so I'll need to get a 90 degrees angled fitting.
    2. I didn't buy enough stupid tubing.
    3. The radguard mesh and the radiator long screws are not compatible. Making me go from pull to push on the fans and I'll need to come up with a bit of a custom solution to cover the top vent holes with the mesh.

xDLGx got a reaction from Paulandpedro in Opinions on Windows vs OSX
I switched to using Mac for work a few years ago and I don't see myself ever going back to Windows.

OS X just feels faster and more stable. It doesn't seem to grow in size and degrade over time. There is no registry, applications keep more to themselves (easier and faster to install/uninstall). No defragmentation or trim to worry about... everything just works.

There are so many little things in OS X that made working it in both easier and faster for me. It does everything Windows does and more. The basic included apps in OS X I also feel are of higher quality than their counterparts in Windows.

The only annoying things I had to get used to is that Mac and Windows uses the ctrl key differently, and Mac has the cmd key. OS X used to have poor mouse support and missing some PC-like keyboard features (all fixed with free third party apps) but they seem to have changed all that with Mountain Lion.

I just have to add that it's a complete joke that you're meant to first pay for the blu-ray player and then pay for some crap software before you're able to play blu-rays on it. PowerDVD is horrible, some edition of that came included with my player, but of course it didn't work anyway (except with normal DVDs).

GTX 580 might not support blu-ray playback their support said, they told me to get a modern graphics card (and this was nearly two years ago).

It just makes people want to go the illegal way and just rip or use various crack methods instead.

xDLGx got a reaction from Vitalius in First new PC build in 10+ years
My guess is that the budget might end up around 4000 USD (keep in mind that you get more PC for 4000 USD in the US or Canada compared to here). The parts I've more or less already selected lands at ~2550 USD.

The 4000 USD includes a new GPU whichever it ends up being (plan to get a strong single GPU and expand later when needed). Also includes all parts for at least CPU watercooling as I plan to start with that and I'll probably get a kit. It should cover a stand alone soundcard if I end up getting one later.

I'm getting 8 gb ram sticks for sure.

I was planning for a 360 radiator with high quality fans as that should fit very well at the top of the case (3 x 120mm cutouts there). It should be enough for both CPU and future GPUs but if it's not I'll just have to get another radiator in there somehow... or fit one externally out back. This is why I'll just do a simple loop for the CPU first.

The PSU is a difficult choice. I wish the Corsair AX digital series had a 1000w option but it jumps from 860w to 1200w. In a future SLI setup with high end GPUs there won't be much overhead with 860w, especially if I end up with AMD cards. I doubt they'll get their act together with the power consumption.

    Thanks for the input guys!
