DarthVader61425 reacted to tomoki in Does keeping my laptop off for a few days harm it?
Battery degradation occurs with heat. Heat causes wear and tear. If you don't fully charge the battery, you can keep it lasting longer in terms of longevity (overall lifespan). That's just a note but anyways, leave the computer turned off if you aren't using it for a couple days. It's not like a car battery where you'll have to get the car running every once in a while just to get the fluids running through the pipes. Good question though.

It only makes a difference when your CPU/GPU gets too hot so that it throttles when it doesn't receive additional cooling.
Nvidia gpu boost 3.0 does work that way but it doesn't care too much. So it makes no difference if your gpu is 60°C or 30°C under load.

Disable service via msconfig, that works for me

That's an AMD graphics card though, honestly Nvidia is usually better.

Actually isn't the 980 usually compared to the 1060 in terms of performance? The 980 ti to the 1070 and the previous Titan x is compared to the nowadays Gtx 1080?

Undervolting doesn't affect performance - Undervolting and Underclocking are two different things. Most laptops come with a stock bios setting that is assembled to make sure that ALL laptops work stable, no matter what the silicon lottery has to say. Sometimes that is sending an overly generous amount of voltage to the CPU - My Alienware 13 R3, for instance, is stable on a -120mV undervolt. This is the stock clock.
In fact, when I undervolted performance INCREASED because I now had more thermal headroom to bump up the turbo boost time.

1. my 120mV undervolt took my computer from 82C at load to 67C at load
2. Intel XTU will automatically reset your settings to default on the next boot. Dial back your undervolt by 10mV and try again.
3. I am only familiar with undervolting CPUs. Can't help you all that much on the GPU front right now.

So far so good. Temps are excellent IMO
You can go for other laptops with GTX 1060 GPU inside. Make sure to check their reviews before buying.

Yea, the 1070 is better than the 980 for sure. the 980ti is comparable to the 1070(might be a bit better?)

They both run hot. The 'quality' in the GL502VM is build quality I believe - just how solid it feels and holds together. I keep specifying GL502VM because I've been told (by @Pendragon among many others) that the GL502VM is great but the GL502VS is a turd. He would probably be more familiar with the GL702 quality vs. the GL502.

Intel XTU (the app you will need to undervolt it anyway) has a built in stress test. Just use that.

Since you're traveling a lot, it's better to get a laptop. Plus budget gaming laptops (like Dell's Inspiron 15 7000) are getting a little hard to beat to get a matching desktop.
If you set your expectations too high, it won't last two years. Even for the desktop version.
I can't take the desktop out at an airport/airplane and start using it.

Laptop bro, if you travel that much for that long.

First, could a msi gtx 1060 fit into that.
Second, the customs in the airport really aren't that knowledgeable and the amount of security checks is really high so if they take the mini ITX desktop there's a 90% chance I probably won't get it back.
Third, wouldn't it be damaged even if I got it through the customs if I put it with the cargo won't there be a high chance for it to get damaged?

i honestly have no idea, i cant see into the future lol. for all we know some new magical tech can come out that makes both desktops and laptops useless.

On a lot of games you can get 60 FPS. I'm just saying with every game you won't.

If airport security lets you take a PC on board, I would just get a mini itx PC. You can carry it around with your peripherals and just use whatever monitor/TV you have where ever you stay.

They will go back down, in a a few weeks. Cards are low on stock everywhere.
-
DarthVader61425 reacted to pcshme33 in GTX 970 how long will it last?
I can't tell you what games are going to be like in 3 years. No one can. But what I can tell you, is that you should get a 10 series card as it has more vram, which games are starting to use more of. The 10 series is also faster. If you are getting a 1080p 60hz monitor, it SHOULD be able to.

DarthVader61425 reacted to pcshme33 in GTX 970 how long will it last?
Well if you are going to be planing on playing high end games, a 970 isn't going to cut it for 3 years, considering that it came out in 2014 and has 3.5 gigs of vram.

DarthVader61425 got a reaction from ThatOneCykaBlyat in 1st Gaming PC, but I don't know if parts work with each other.
you can check out these parts on here the website should tell you if they're compatible or not.
However, I would strongly recommend if you're gonna be using your pc for gaming pay less on the cpu that on the gpu, I'd suggest get the 1070 or 1080 if you can and you can edit your build as you like.
