It's not really possible to change your username by accident.  You have to navigate into account settings, then click on "Change", then type in a new name and hit the button.  For this reason I don't believe more protections are necessary, but if anything such an addition would consist of a popup saying "Your new username will be xXx_1337hax0r_xXx for the next 6 months, do you wish to proceed (Cancel/OK)" or something of that nature.  I don't believe this is strictly necessary though since given the significance of the event, it would be normal to take care and ensure everything is correct before proceeding.

A filter for bad words, as mentioned, would be ineffective as well as cause unintended side-effects.

Ryan, internet points are a hell of a drug.

Essentially, me and my friends on Discord were joking around about 'Linus (insert verb here) Tips' and i was like, "HAHA lemme do this on the forum but not actually cuz thats stoopid". After receiving my internet points, I went back to the tab, but instinctively hit the big orange button instead of closing the tab, thanks brainfart. The rest is history.

ok now I do know that Macs can get viruses.  my question is do I really need it?  I will be installing Malwarebytes on it but do I need anti virus?  I have anti virus on my main windows pc but do I need it for my Mac?  Thanks

1.) Macs CAN get viruses, it is totally a myth that they can't. Turns out, it is estimated that over 700k macs are infected by the flashback trojan, mainly because the owners think that macs can't get viruses. On top of that, Apple is pretty lazy with patching security vulnerabilities (for example, the 6 year old MySQL vulnerability which doesn't take much to fix on iphones) and studies have shown that it is quite often that they fail updating the firmware and software after the patches that do get released. As long as you aren't a complete numbnut though, you should be fine with Malwarebytes if you really want to.

TLDR: Dont be an idiot with your mac, sometimes Apple does it for you.

  3. Hey everyone!

Essentially, I want to use this to allow for people at swim meets to keep track of what event it is, as it is common place for school swim meets that you aren't in the pool area and can't see the scoreboard, making it a bit of a hassle to see what the event number is. To do this, I have come up with a good system, but i'm not sure how to actually code it.

I do have some experience with Bootstrap and Web Development, but when it comes to notifications, i get fairly lost. Basically, I want to have a user visit a website, and click a button to confirm that they want to receive notifications. Then, I want the website to send a cURL GET request to see if anything is updated, and if so, to send a notification to the user. I know on android, as long as you have the tab open in chrome (even if you aren't in the app itself) the notifications will be sent, but i wasn't sure about if it works in the safari app on ios or on ios at all.

If anybody knows how to implement a solution or how the notifications work on ios, that would be great.

NOTE: I already know how to make an API, so that isnt an option.

Hey, I'm currently looking for a computer for my little brother for around 250-300 usd for minecraft. He needs wireless networking too.

If he wants a desktop, go with a used or refurbished dell optiplex, and if you think u need more graphics, a $20 gpu from microcenter or amazon will be fine.

If he wants a laptop, i would recommend this one: link

@pierom_qwerty I do not need every aspect. Just google chrome. I can use office online

What I mean is that nothing that runs on regular windows will run on ARM windows...

That app I linked earlier will give you a fully featured android desktop, which allows for a fully featured version of word and a fully featured version of chrome. Here is a video demoing it:

Yes, windows does have an ARM version, but there is something you need to take into account. Microsoft has not supported every aspect of Windows, so not every application will run. You're better off using Sentio Desktop as multiple applications are supported by android, including word and chrome/firefox.

Can I install windows on this cheap android box ? If so, I have got my self a decent PC for watching youtube and editing word documents e.t.c. The main reason I wan it is because it is cheap, and energy efficient, so I can multiple of them to my 12V solar system. Also, 4GB of RAM isn't too bad, and it is pretty compact too

If you are able to, it would have to be the ARM version of windows. I'll look into it, but you might be better off just sticking to android, as there are desktop modes for it which make it act just like a regular pc, and then you can download the android version of word for that.

As to your second point, I doubt that they actually look at what was being ran.  If they did that for every account, they would have to employ an army of people and then you could step into various privacy issues too.

They actually do, when I was using a free account to do F@H, I got a notification that I may have been mining crypto, so I had to let them know I wasn't just making free money, so they do have systems in place to see that.

Ok, this will sound a bit thick but I've googled it and can't get a clear answer.

I'm new to android and need to do a full backup, of everything. I want to keep my full res photos and all of my app data and messages if at all possible. On iPhone it was very simple and I'm looking for an android equivalent. Can I just plug the phone into my PC, copy the data across then be able to copy it onto a replacement phone?

I have a OnePlus 7 Pro if that information helps.

This is a good article I found to do so, I would just recommend a single change:

It says to get the entire andorid SDK, but in my opinion that is just unnecessary. You can get a minimal version which only has ADB and Fastboot here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588979

free computer, free 1tb salvage drives from dead machines

    there , can't beat free

better than free, use your brain!

Most computational neuroscientists tend to estimate human storage capacity somewhere between 10 terabytes and 100 terabytes, though the full spectrum of guesses ranges from 1 terabyte to 2.5 petabytes. (One terabyte is equal to about 1,000 gigabytes or about 1 million megabytes; a petabyte is about 1,000 terabytes.)

now you are a computer and have a lot of storage!

I think if you go out of your way to change things with inspect element then all bets are off and you should expect issues, and those aren't really a bug.  To be a bug it has to happen naturally

True true, but sometimes I will intentionally try to break the forum, and then inform mortis about the problem so possibly he can fix it.

I work for an organization that is looking to roll out Minecraft to some managed chromebooks, which in theory have the ability to run it. However when I go to add Minecraft to the list of allowed Play Store apps, it will not let me. It seems to let me allow any other app except Minecraft. Does anyone know why this might be? Here is a video clip showing the issue

The only reason I can think of for this would be that Minecraft as an app costs money, and you would need to purchase it for all of the devices.

Please don't go trying to test the limits (it does cause issues), but the post size limit is quite a lot bigger than that.

remember that time where I broke the forum so every page i had posted on was suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuppppppppppppppperrrr wide??? lol me too

To be clear, it actually only has 1 GB of RAM, but chrome seems to behave itself much better than the memes would imply.  To quote my guide, "With 6 tabs open I only use about 1/3 of the RAM, so you should have plenty of room for anything you would conceivably do on such a low performance device"

    I'll take that into account!

Just looked that up quickly and I would imagine it should work fine.  Doesn't seem like it would be too resource intensive

Since it is server rendered, it isn't really, but when you go for a few months with only 4gb of ram and a dual core, you really notice when things like chrome go full memory whore.

Thanks ryan, thats probably what i'll do!

What about RPi 3?  Do you have a specific task it needs to be able to handle or just messing around?

Currently looking at running repl.it on android or chromeos, not sure yet. As the recommended specs for chrome os is a dual core and 4gb of ram and specs on the lowest end android 10 devices are quad cores with 2gb of ram

might go with the rpi3 actually, as that might work lol

  17. Hey everyone, I haven't been able to find something relatively cheap which matches this description, so I decided LTT might be a good place for it. I'm working on a super cheap computer to see how cheap I could get one which had at least 2 cores and 4gb of ram. I originally looked at the raspberry pi 4, but those were torwards the top of my price range, so I brought my attention to some tv sticks, more specifically this one. Any thoughts on it or something similar for a lower price that anyone knows of?
