I have an old HP LaserJet P4015 that I got for free at my previous job.

The printer was in the warehouse, it started acting up, but was used daily, so my boss called our HP maintenance provider. They quoted $800 to fix it ... and a new one was $600, so we got a new one.

I asked if I could take it, you know, in case I could fix it on my own and my boss said yes ; it was going in the trash anyway. Brought it home, fixed the plastic part that was broken for the paper pickup, got a few "empty" toners from work (warehouse workers would throw out the toner when prints started looking dim, but you could shake the toner and get another 600-1000 prints out of it), and haven't looked back since.

My previous printer was an Epson 3-in1 inkjet printer / scanner / fax, that would refuse to print or scan if it had an empty ink cartridge ... yes, it wouldn't even SCAN if it was empty on ink ... SCAN ... fuck you Epson.

    People: get a laser printer

Me: since when did laser printers exist?

Honestly didn't know that laser printers existed but probably won't get one as a print maybe 10 pages in a semester.

Little bit of a real story for those interested:

    Spoiler

My father who runs his own business had been using the same HP Inkjet printer for years. Every other week it was complaining that it was out of one color or another. We eventually learned that the cleaning cycle the printer would go through prior to each printing session was done so using it's own ink. That and the fact they mix in color with black/white prints because their claim is it makes for a better color black. Yeah, that's absolute BS.

Finally we're at Office Max and he's trying to find the ink cartridges for the InkJet which are a bigger scam than US healthcare or big farma. I just looked at him and said "Hey, I think you should put the money down on a laser printer." It took some convincing and persuasion but I got him to look at some basic laser/toner printers with price tags not that much higher than the ink based printer. He caved and took my investment advice (I picked a model for him that came with wired Ethernet 🤤. Screw that wireless crap).

Took a little while to setup on the network but once it was up and running he loved how fast it popped out documents. It has now been installed for several months or more (I've actually forgotten exactly how long ago we bought it so much time has passed) and we STILL haven't gone through the small toner cartridge it came with in the box.

I asked him if he was happy with the investment and he said very.

Funny enough he tried to offhand the old InkJet and I told him nobody would want it. It's more plastic than anything else. It eventually went it the trash as I expected.
