Many people actually blow over their allotted storage. I know I'm having to juggle content now that I'm nearly done with 64GB. It can happen. My photos alone can go 20-30GB, and I sure as hell like having all my content with me cause I do have my phone all the time, I don't have my computer all the time.

Sometimes I use the torrent to get Tool Assisted Speedrun videos from tasvideos.org when the direct mirror doesn't work so well... which is rare.

Direct mirror is usually the least fussy, don't have to fiddle with torrent before and after the download.

Disclaimer: I didn't read more than the first pages before posting, but I felt that I had to post. I have been absent from the forums for most of 2014, mostly because I wasn't that happy with the way things evolved, and that includes in no small part what was brought up here. So I found this thread a fitting place for my 1500th post. (warning, rant like post following)

I have been thinking about a lot of what @That Norwegian Guy brought up here lately. I can understand why LTT has changed over the last year. LMG needs to stand on its own two feet, they need to be sellable to convice sponsors to give them money. I also get that before Linus could just grab whatever from NCIX and make a video about it, and now he can't. All that is fine. But that doesn't change the "facts":

Linus videos has become about visuals, not substance, like they used to be. Linus got big in the first place because people valued his opinnions and ability to talk about and show off tech, not because he made videos that looked good. Nowadays, barely a week can pass without Linus talking about some new improvements to his visuals, some new camera, a lense, anything, why? It doesn't change the content, it only makes it look prettier, but when the quality of the content is fading away, all we're left with is porn for camera geeks. Logan and crew has more than adequate production quality, they have just barely gotten to the point where they have hired an editor...

Linus also tries to turn more professional in his presentations, so he has started scripting. My thoughts: Linus' scripting abilities is far worse than his rambling abilities. It's unpersonal, it's not believable. Frankly, it could be anyone reading that script, and the video wouldn't suffer from it. The point of Linus being in front of the camera is lagely gone (at least if we ignore the fact that some people tune in just to see a Linus video, good or bad)

The live streams are about the only good thing to come out of LMG on a regular basis, and that too has taken a serious turn for the worse, starting from the time he introduced regular guests. And where's the afterparty? Where are the builds of the week? I remember Linus talking how he didn't have the afterparty in the youtube upload because he felt it was less serious, people would turn out and the video would get a worse rating... the afterparty used to be the best part. and then Slick started doing game streaming as an afterparty, only thing is, it would be a lot later, which meant that if anyone in europe wanted to see it, they would have to stay up, hoping he would start soon, and then probably go to sleep at 7 in the morning dissapointed that they wouldn't catch it.

There's a lot to talk about, and I won't go into much more, but i have to touch on "as fast as possible". The first videos he made in this series could carry that name, yes. But lately, there's absolutely noting "as fast as possible" over most of the videos he makes. When a video is supposed to be snappy and explain stuff quickly, why throw in a joke that eats up 30 seconds of the video without actually providing anything of value? And there's a lot more time wasting going on than just that.

If I were to point at the last time I think Linus really covered a product well, I would point to the launch of the original Titan. The most enjoyable video he has done lately was the april 1st joke about the Define R4... That's a little insight of my thoughts on the matter.

Speaking of the wayback machine, we have a large collection of PC Authority and PC PowerPlay mags (see the Imgur link for the full res image and go on a nostalgia trip), some odd webcomic books, albums, Sound cards, TV Tuners, and Nichijou (in Finnish), also the 'Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3 machine' and the Xbox One (the original and best... I have dear memories, the system link parties were real!) with Phantom Crash on top, its a good custom mecha game with some lovely Japanese quirks (kinda like Nichijou!) Also the glowing blue Phillips Hue Bridge.

TotemSP2 reacted to asquirrel in [Extreme Tech] Sony has developed 185TB tapes, yes, those tapes
@Fooshi: So...every large company has tape backups. Google and amazon...I'm not so sure. But Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Fidelity, Walmart, Target, JCPenny, Autozone, etc. All of these companies have tape backup. Why? Three reasons. Friction (from management and 'the way it was previously done'), cost (even at 5¢ per GB for SATA, the storage arrays you'd need, power and cooling, floor space, etc, make it prohibitively expensive), and regulations (government rules on data retention).

Most IT orgs whose heads aren't shoved so far... destage backup data to hard drives as an intermediate step. So...around 6PM at night, assuming 6pm-6am is their slower time for business, the backup jobs kick in and start writing the backup data for that night to spinning disk. There are a few companies that sell solutions for this, Data Domain is the only one I can name off the top of my head. Anyway, you destage the data to disk because it's WAY faster than writing directly to tape and then you write from those disks to tape over the next 23 hours (it shouldn't take 23 hours, but that's your window before the next day's backups start).

As for why use tape? Because it is, bar none, the most dense form of digital storage available. It's also cheap. The tape head unit (read/writer) costs $7000-15000, depending on what you are buying, and yes you have a storage array that has 12 or 24 or them, but really, 200K, and another $100-300 per tape, to get something saved that will last you at LEAST 50 years sitting on a shelf? Yes please?

Tape *is* innovative. The innovation just isn't as whiz bang as iphones or new multicore CPUs. The innovation is on the magnetic layer, how the heads write the data to the tape itself (the physical layout of bits to maximize density). New amplifier and high-gain antennae designs to read ever-fainter magnetic fields. New materials for making the tape out of that not only allow for tighter magnetic fields, but also weaker ones (the weaker the field, the more closely together you can pack the bits).

I understand *why* you think tape is a dinosaur, but you are sadly mistaken. Tape is still very much needed by corporate business. Small mom&pop shops don't need tape because tape becomes cost effective past a certain economy of scale. Once your company has a PB or more of data, tape is generally a *very* attractive backup option from a cost perspective. Possibly even sooner, depending on retention rules for the specific data you are saving.

edit: Also, yes, a fair bit of work does go into ensuring that the new tape read/write units can read the previous format or 2 of data, giving you time to migrate your data on older tapes to newer ones, just in case you need that data and the read/write units aren't made anymore.

Basically what you said. Sony isn't "bringing back" tapes, Tapes never left. They have always been used for long term backup storage, simply because it is the best option.

Enthusiasts don't often want what makes sense in reality; they want what is "cool", or "awesome" (or "wicked awesome", if you're from New England). As an example, I reference the mythical 144Hz, 2.5K IPS display with G-sync and 10-bit color, for less than $400.

Nice blog post by Cliffy B on why the facebook acquisition is a good thing. This complaining has gone on for long enough, time for all of you to get out of your hipster, entitled holes. VR will be mainstream despite what you want because it makes sense. Sure it'll be great for gaming, but it can do so much more.

As long as Oculus VR remains separate of Facebook, there shouldn't be much to worry about. In fact, it gives Oculus the financial stability it needs to get a consumer version out sooner.

If fb doesn't do anything, well, let's just stop paying, stop advertising and simply stop using it for a month - when about a million do it, Facebook will react to it, the big problem though is if it busts, then it's over....

    Good lord people, stop over-reacting.
Oculus kickstarted the race to decent Virtual Reality technology. Even if it were to fail itself it has already paved the path for others to follow - it's inevitable that we will have decent VR tech. Look at Sony's VR tech for crying out loud - the rumours currently circulating suggest that it's got a superior visual clarity and depth compared to any of the current iterations of the Rift.
I am quite sure that Oculus will continue unhindered by its acquisition by Facebook, and may in-fact benefit from it. Facebook is a very large and influential company - they would not purchase Oculus unless they were absolutely confident that its purchase would result in good PR and potentially money for their company. It is NOT in their interest to run it into the ground.

Why are you all so quick to judge? Why don't you at least wait to see what happens with this?

Facebook has a lot more money they Oculus VR ever did and therefore are able to inject a lotta money into the whole industry, bringing advancements in technology to everyone. This happened TODAY and already people are hating, you have no idea what Zuckerberg's plans are for this. They also have a lot of influence on everything that goes on socially in the world and they could tie that in with VR nicely.
