scottiegfftv reacted to Hanoverfist in Electric Orange [Completed with Final Photo's]
Hello to the Build Logs,
About a year ago I had an Idea for an Orange and Black Build. I started thinking about different shades of Orange, what parts to have color and what would remain black.
I had an old Antec DF-85 that was Empty and collecting dust, and so it began. I few ideas and many hours later "Electric Orange" was Born.
Lets start at the Beginning. There is Definitely some potential here with this case. At this stage I really don't know how much yet.
I don't do Sketch work or Create Renders for Mods. Everything with this Project is off the Hip and very spontaneous..
Windows Paint is about as High tech as it gets for me.
Well, That looks good, lets rip it apart..
Now that its in Pieces, I needed a Color. Searches for Electric Orange Paint really didn't lead to the right shade for me. So, I decided on a shade of Orange called Omaha.
This Shot of a 69 Mopar in Omaha Orange Inspired me.
A Quick trip to my friends at Napa and Presto.. Omaha Custom Mixed to Aerosol..
So I Started spraying panels and fans and You name it. But in the End, I just wasn't happy with the Final Product. Lots of Orange Peel..
There has to Be a Better Way to paint this.. At this point in the Project is it too late to start over? Nope.
Quick Trip to the Acid Tanks at my Powdercoater and Wah-La.. All Better.. Oh,, Why not Build a Paint Booth in my Basement and get a Full Blown HVLP set up and teach myself how to paint Professionally while I'm at it..
So I Did.
Now that I set myself up with Pro Hardware. Lets Paint.
Much Smoother and controlled Surface Now. Rattle cans are a thing of the Past for me.
Here is an Example of the Surface top Coat I can Produce now with my HVLP Gun. Color is "Burma Black Pearl" and "Omaha Orange" Front Panel Shot here.
Enough about the Painting.. Lets talk some Hardware.
Instead of listing all this Out.. Lets take a Picture Tour .. More Fun than Reading..
Gtx 360's and Gt's.. Bought Rads Third hand for great price . Stripped and painted

This is where the Build stands today. Still Working on it, Would have been nice to have it done today , being Halloween
Still Bending the Acrylic.. which has proven to be more challenging than Expected..
Still running Electrical, but have wrapped up the PSU for the most part.
Working on an Idea for a cover for that top area to conceal the backside of top panel. Forgive some of my Wrinkle Backdrop shots,
Still working on my photo Studio
To Be Continued...
Complete....

scottiegfftv reacted to ALXAndy in A rig for my lady, that she doesn't want....
Quick thanks list...
Craig - we owe this one to you mate.
Gary - for the cheaps cooler.
So I started off by unpacking some parts. We've just moved into our new flat.
And got out the motherboard.
And the CPU
Nekkid !
Kewlar !
Shiny.
In goes the CPU
Time for some TIM. I wanted something cheap. I was poking around the OCUK classifieds and saw some one selling some Cool labs Liquid Pro for £5 delivered. I was a bit worried about it given it sort of sets and ruins the warranty, but this rig is for my lady so will be staying as is.
One small blob, one big step for cooling.
And after a lot of trying to spread it with a Q tip...
The megabitch squashed my head ! the bitch !
Thanks for the memories.
In she goes.
And on with the fan.
The door bell goes, a gift from my lady..
The SSD.
The exhaust.
35 hernia causing kilos of case. I tested the power supply a couple of days back and it seems to be OK. Phew.
Time to remove the mask.
Bit more..
And done.
It's rocking the new plexi window I put in. It's UV reactive neon pink.
Duct fans.
IO
Uh O.
Interlude.. Basically the front panel header was not wired correctly for the board. This caused me a two hour pause and tons of stress. Basically the header is critical to the running of the case. If it's not wired correctly not only can you not turn the PC on, but nothing works as the HD LED is wired to the control board. In the end I had to get the manual for my old Asrock board, draw out a plan, figure out the colours (they're like an OEM car stereo, all weird and nonsensical) and then break them out and shrink wrap them before fitting them individually..
Back on with the build...
GPUs.
And done..
It..Is...Alive...
And time for some fun
Sadly the Ninja isn't good enough to LinX at 4.4ghz, though the board was fine with it. In the end I settled for the obligatory 4.2ghz and temps remained in check
I did benchmark it but I can't get to the scores right now.. Will add them later. What I did finally get was 30 mins alone with my rig and managed to fit the GPU. -
scottiegfftv reacted to flibberdipper in Apparently I have 4 Dimm slots?
lol Did that with my friend's old computer. We upgraded it to a P4 Extreme Edition and 4GB of RAM, with a 9800GT, and it came with a 2.8GHz Prescott, 512MB of RAM, and integrated graphics.

UPDATE4
So it turns out school is using most of my free time and I dont have much free time left to work on my pc..
I made some custom case feet from some thick tube I found. I think it they did work just fine.
second sets of feet was made by using some washers and some rubber things. I didnt liked them
I also found some foam sheets that I would be use to cover the PSU cover. got 2 pieces for 1€
Started planning and gluing it on the psu cover. toooooo much glue!
Testing and it looks good

scottiegfftv reacted to XionEternum in Radeon R9 270X will use revised version of Tahiti LE GPU
I've been looking at this from my own personal situation: I'm getting the R9-290X
When I first built my custom PC back in 2007, I went all-out AMD. It was the perfect time to do it too since AMD's market share was rising quickly due to Phenom's evolution. ATI/AMD cards at the time were awesome and competitive. Nvidia cards seemed generally more expensive for the same relative performance at the time, and still tend to be to this day. Albeit, about 18 months ago I caught the EVGA GTX580 Ultra Classified on a supersale for $250 and immediately jumped ship from my HD5770 to that. Huge performance gain, I will not deny. However, I've noticed since I got it, and configured it, and with every Nvidia graphics card I've used in every client build; there is a somewhat noticeable difference in overall image quality between Nvidia and AMD. I've had a slight buyer's remorse since then, and felt I should've just got the HD7870 I saw on sale for the same price. Sure it wasn't as high a performer, but I do miss that image quality. Frankly, I find Nvidia's focus on FXAA and TXAA rather insulting. Both look like poo compared to MSAA or SSAA, especially with AMD's edge-detection. In truth, TXAA is pretty much the same proported quality as AMD's MSAA with edge-detection. It's just lower quality since it's using a post-process effect. I have every reason to leave Nvidia behind because of these key image quality points from my personal experience. I will never deny their performance, but I'ld gladly sacrifice a few FPS for a sharper image. Yes, I've also configured the Nvidia control panel to not use FXAA, but the difference in quality is still very much noticeable for me. I've even swapped in the occasional client-build AMD card just to affirm I'm not imagining it.
I've been watching AMD's product line, and wanted an HD7970GE to replace it for some time now. However, I haven't had the means to replace my current with something better, and won't until soon in the next few months. So it's rather perfect timing considering. I will admit, I was expecting the HD8000-series. Every freaking rumor-mill was expecting the HD9000-series, just like they had with every prior generation (5000-series predicted, 4000-series launched, 6000-series predicted, 5000-series launched, etc). I'm glad to see the rumor-mill was wrong yet again, and wish people would take notice and stop giving these parasites free hits and ad revenue for reporting lies. If they really knew, they'ld have been breaking NDA and lost their partnership for reviews. Anyway, the rebranding is no different from what Nvidia has done, so it's not a big deal in hindsight. If you've been involved in PC tech for 5+ years, you'ld know Intel and Nvidia were workstation-centric and came with a premium for that purpose while AMD/ATI was gaming-centric. Not sure when that concept changed among the general PC community, but it's really always been true with exceptions and caveats along the way of course. Consider for a moment my GTX580. Guess what it scores in Firestrike. Just over 6000. Know where the GTX680 is? Just over 7000. And Nvidia was saying the GTX680 alone could do the same framerates as 3-way SLI GTX580s. Top this off with significantly reduced double-precision CUDA-core counts in the GTX600 series compared to not only the GTX500 series, but also the GTX400 series. They were made solely for gaming with single-precision CUDA-cores, and left all notion of budget 3D rendering behind. Now OpenCL is also a thing and performs best on AMD. Yeah, I've completely lost interest in supporting Nvidia. What exactly are they doing right now? Pushing their precious Shield and GTX600/700 series cards in tandem with eachother. How is that helping move PC gaming forward? AMD is doing that now and always has been.
Sorry for the long-winded response to this, just wanted to point out all my reasons and rational behind this. Just eager to get back on an AMD GPU.

scottiegfftv reacted to Jumper118 in Retro OC Rig with some case modding *9 new cpu's*
Ok the corsair ram has come finally :D the rig is pretty much complete and fully benched for now. I have put it back in the case but these are the last few pics of the benchmarks with the new ram and back in the case at last.
2X512MB of the finest, corsair XMS platinum ddr ram. it matches the paint on the outside of the case B) .
The new scores with the xms ram which can overclocks to a massive 260+mhz (520mhz). It got a extra 0.02 points because of the faster ram when doing multi-threaded rendering.
it also improved the single threaded score.
i did manage to get the cpu to boot at 3.81ghz, but with 1.8v going though the cpu and the ram bottleneck gone, it still wasn't stable enough to cinebench and the heatsink was getting rather warm as you can imagine, so i didn't want to push to any higher voltage. the highest i manage to cinebench the cpu was 3.76ghz but it seemed to perform better at 3.72ghz because the screen was flickering at 3.76ghz.
It is now back in the case ready to be used for gaming. i am keeping the cpu at 3.6ghz in the case because its not very practical to keep the cpu at 1.7v when gaming because there is a lot of heat being dumped out with not much performance increase.
finally i overclocked the gpu back to some sensible clock speeds and i'm currently playing through gta san andreas with all the settings at the max. the gpu is running well and hasn't missed a beat.
I have also been doing some more case modding so that the case can 1) get more air flowing through it and 2) put some positive prussure in the case to prevent the collection of dust, to reduce temperatures and maintenance.
first i took the front i/o and switches off and separated the front panel because it can be split into 2 pieces.
i then drilled a few rough holes around where i was going to be mounting the new 120mm bitfinix case fan from my shinobi, which now has a corsair af 140mm instead.
i then screwed the new fan in with 2 screws, in opposite corners.
This is what the fan looks like on the back of the front panel.
I then replaced the front i/o and restart switch, but not the power button because the new fan sits in the way. I am planning on installing the switch in a different location at a later date.
Finally i tied down the front i/o wires that go off to the motherboard, so that they did not obstruct the airflow or get court up in the fan.
I may change the set up at the front in future to make the case look nicer by replacing the drilled plastic with some steel mesh as well as spraying the inside of the case and maybe putting a window in.
This may be the last on this pc for a while though because i'm already starting and gathering parts for the next 2 builds: a socket 462 athlon xp rig in the next few weeks and a socket 775 rig which i am hoping to start well before christmas.
