  1. OP, people here keep insisting that a 960 is no longer a 1080p card (even a 970) and that you need more vram than required and that if you use anything lower than a 1060 6GB for 1080p games will not run fine. And you expect them to know about ram adaptors? As far as working goes, its good that it does and there is no reason it shouldn't other than different voltages if the ram was LP. If it didn't work it would mean that the interface would be different which in practice means that DDR3 wouldn't be a standard.
  2. Oh my... You just won the internet RReally, really well put. I was thinking about a way to explain to them in a serious(ish) way why pirn is not sex ed but you sir, you took thre cake. Really funny mental image. This law is stupid and completely nonesense. Wanna stop small children watching porn? How about they get proper sexual education and involve parents on the issue? Fucking conservative prudes. Maybe having kids watch porn would be a good way to stop young moms. "Doctor I can't get pregnant." "Are you having sex?" "Yes. About 3x a week my boyfriend screws me then pulls out and comes on my tits." (Paraphrasing a Ricky Gervai's joke)
  3. Yeah. My favourite from that list is Personal computing because it gives a closeness feeling but not necessarily expensive. I was aiming for the fact that his shop will be advising customers on what to build giving you the best bang for your buck. Also, OP could consider doing some second hand builds for cheap to attract more customers where he charges for the labour and searching fee. Maybe give some sort of hardware guarantee if he can check if all components are in good shape (like refurbished).

  5. Unpopular opinion: Dash Lambda and IAEInferno should just have sex and get it over with
  6. And the good versions of the 480 already close the gap to the 1060 on dx11. With further driver improvements, we could see the RX 480 surpass the 1060 in a not so distant future.
  7. Its easy dude. Just ask your friend to take you to an empty field where you can practice. Get a G27 anyway and get into sim racing but that is a different thing altogether. Seriously, learn how to shift in an actual car.
  8. The USB type A port is here to stay for a while. Apple removing it will only annoy people. This decision is ridiculous if true. Its like making your life that little bit extra hard. No wonder that people who want to do actual work get a PC. Heck, my work laptop (an old lenovo w510) is still going solid. I recently had to replace the HDD and that was it. 12GB of Ram an i7-something (45nm architecture) and a quadro 880M that still plays Dota 2 and war thunder on minimum and Dragon Ball Xenoverse... And it has a 900p screen so it is good for productivity. And the best laptop keyboard short of a mechanical one... I would never replace it with a Mac.
  9. Well, logically, I would say grab the fury since the performance per price is better. But, I know how these things are so grab whatever will give you more pleasure. That Fury is in a really good price point though... Another piece of advice, if you think about the 1070, really look into the reference PCB in lieu of custom PCBs. The difference in price is not worth it unless you are really into heavy over clocking. And even then, silicon lottery is going to be the main factor on how well the card will behave. Seriously, custom coolers but reference PCB is the way to go for single card configs.
  10. The tech is not old just because of Regulations. It also has to be able to withstand higher levels of radiation. In space, the first quad core was developed recently which went from a 192 nm single core architecture to 68nm quad core. Needless to say, everyone is excited
  11. There are pioneers and there is the rest. At this moment, VR is being sold to pioneers which are basically early adopters who are getting money into VR which allows for further development and cost reduction. In a couple of years, the price of VR headsets will be dramatically lower and more people will afford it. I see VR not as 3D TV but has full HD TVs and 4K TVs. Eventually they will become ubiquitous. Proof is in the pudding though. And this generation of GPUs saw a major price decrease for VR able GPUs with AMD's RX 480 and Nvidia's 1060 allowing for a decent VR experience at a much lower cost. Strap in an i3 6100 with some decent amount of ram and one of these cards and you can get a VR able computer for less than $800. How is that for affordability? Mind you this list was made in less than 2 min. I am sure you can lower the costs of some parts. 12. I would like to see some bike tech reviewed such as the SRAM red etap wireless shifters or the shimano Di2 system.
  13. Neither of the things you listed were based off of science fiction. The first recorded submarine or submersible comes from ancient Rome and the more modern rendition with in situ reporting comes from the 17th century England with drawings dating back to the 16th century. Nuclear reactors come from physics. Actually, the first concept comes from ancient phoenecia where a philosopher said (paraphrasing) that if you split the atom the amount of energy released would level an entire city or something of the sort. The first helicopter or rather, vertical flight machine was a chinese toy from around 400 BC followed by the drawing from Leonardo Vinci and the first operational vertical flying machine was developed in Russia in the 18th century. It wasn't meant to carry humans and was spring operated but there you go. Sorry for the post but it "irks" me when the work of countless scientists and engineers is beliteled and someone claims science fiction though of any human developmeny first. Sure they have a job of spreading the message around but they get their inspiration from real life. Be it reading Russian textbooks on vertical flight or obscure references on the Greek's usage of submersible ships. The point is, they get their material from somewhere. Even star wars can be said to be using ideas from science like hyperspace jumps being travel through paths that light does not use or lightsabers being an evolution of plasma technology already existent in plasma cutters and things like that. They need inspiration from somewhere no?
  14. This. Really good advice here. For productivity work, I would try and get a larger ssd where your wife can keep her current project since it will increase speeds in photo editing somewhat. BTW, for editing, mo ram is mo better. Sizes can get really.big really quick and if you go into the HDD, you will notice a drop in speed. As for the HDD in question, worst case scenario, you will have to format them and reinstall is if you mess up. You can't damage other components so go Rambo on it.
  15. I think the general build is good enough. I would upgrade to 32 GB of memory, and maybe consider getting a Xeon if they are cheaper. Those programs use cuda for rendering and computing but not sure if AMD has come forward with cuda implementation yet so I would stay with nvidia. What you are looking for is cuda cores and memory so try a 980 ti or a Titan X (maxwell) either in clearance or second hand. The titan x especially will perform better than the 1070 in computing heavy tasks due to higher memory bandwidth and size and a lot more cuda cores.
  16. For computing tasks this is irrelevant. If the program can use two GPUs (has to be programmed that way) then all the cuda cores will be used. No scaling of any sort. An example of this is computing ffts in parallel. So, if your code allows for it, dual GPUs will be better.
  17. You will always need to upgrade GPU. Maybe not next year or in two years time but next year a 1170 (or whatever its going to becalled) will have titan xp performance and the year after, a 1260 will be better (if the performance gains are as they are now). Buy something for what you need and upgrade more often is the best way to go. A 1080 will last you as long as a Titan xp for the games your friend plays and with the 600 bucks saved, you can take a vacation, buy a vr headset, buy a bike, get a lot of weed... All better uses for your money.
  18. It is not a flop. Prices on computers that can run vr are coming down and it is a matter of time until vr headsets do too. VR and AR are here to stay. It is different than 3D monitors since more people are intrigued and understand that it is a different experience. 3D monitors, you are still looking at a flat screen. Just give it time and the adopters will increase.
  19. You can run FH3 on a PC if you bought it on XBone and vice versa. If you look it up in the windows store, it says that right in the discription.
  20. Actually, afrermarket 980 tis are usually able to beat the Titan X in games due to higher core clocks possible. My 980 ti clocks at 1405 Mhz that beats a reference titan x at every game. The 780 ti also beat the Titan black at pretty much everything. I probably will skip this generation and maybe get a second 980ti but it should be a mighty card.
  21. Though this graph is good news, 70% of the market share is still a damn near monopoly.
  22. Do some troubleshooting first. First, turn down grass from ultra to high. Second use msaa x4 max!!! MSAA is very taxing on the system in gta V (not as much as mwo but still...) If you don't get over 60 fps like this then lower your settings to the minimum without vsync and see the framerates you are getting. Also run some benchmarks and compare it to other isers. Also, uninstall all drivers and let windows automatically install the base drivers and see if performance increases. I had a similar problem when I got my 980 ti and it was a certain driver version that slashed performance in half. When nvidia updated the drivers, I could install those again. That might be the issue.
  23. I can verify this as I have a similar setup. I can run wicher 3 maxed without hairworks at about 80 fps average. My card has a boost of 1405 Mhz and a small 100 Mhz OC to the memory. Edit: my 6700k is stock btw. Never really felt the need to OC it.
