Just because they "work" doesn't mean they're 6,000mAh.

Last I checked, the highest capacity anyone's managed in an 18650 form factor was around 3,500mAh, and its very expensive.

If you still don't believe me, I'll buy them all for 10 bucks and do a capacity test on my 18650 tester.

Folding on a laptop will kill it pretty quick. The power delivery and cooling on them isnt designed to run at full load 24/7.

iamdarkyoshi got a reaction from DrMacintosh in HP's "Landfiller" Desktop PC
I recently built a PC to replace one of my friends' slow machines.

I've seen these before, but now that I have gotten a hold of one, figured I'd make a detailed post about it.

HP's typical basic tower is an mATX case with one optical drive, space for one or two HDDs, four expansion slots, and a standard ATX PSU.

This machine is pretty normal from all views...

...Except the back of the unit. Almost nothing has been punched out! And yes, they only used three screws on the fan. Four would have been far too much.

There are no expansion slots punched out, not even space for a PSU. The machine is instead powered by a typical 65w HP laptop charger.

If we open it up, things get even more absurd.

What a remarkable waste of space!! And in traditional HP fashion, one wifi antenna on a card that clearly can do two.

Taking everything out of the machine, its pretty clear that the same PC could be achieved in a massively smaller space. Obviously exact component placement would be a bit different than just "on top of each other" but still, this general layout would be totally doable, especially if they had switched the 5.25in optical drive for a laptop optical drive.

Powering this monster is an AMD A4-5000 APU.

...yes, a 15w 1.5ghz laptop CPU. I'd like to point out that a basic e8400 core 2 duo released 5 years before this one will beat this CPU in both single and multithreaded tasks, even though it has half the core count.

While I'm sure it would be fine for VERY basic web browsing at a low cost, its still sad to see all of this steel being wasted when a machine 1/4 the volume would have been totally possible. My 1080Ti/8086K PC is less than half the size of this machine.

Thoughts on HP's design choices here?

iamdarkyoshi got a reaction from Juck3n in 1,000 Post! DIY Fan Power Hub Tutorial!
Since this is my 1,000th post, I have decided to put together a useful tutorial for everyone.
I will teach everyone an easy way to connect PC fans and watercooler pumps to a power supply without modding cables or buying any expensive fan controllers. The downside is that the motherboard cannot read or control the fans. They just go at a set speed. Even though the lower speeds work on most pumps, my swiftech ones run extremely slow to the point of being nearly useless on the lowest speed.
All you will need is a paperclip, a pliers, and a power supply with a floppy drive connector.
You need to understand the pinouts and color code of PC fans:

The 4 pin fans are the same as 3 pin fans in this scenario but without the PWM (blue) wire.
This can be configured for three different speeds:
    Low speed:
    Medium speed:
    Full speed:
Only have one floppy drive connector? Not a problem.
Make sure to put some tape over this as the paperclips can touch things if the fan gets pulled out.
If you have any questions or see that I missed something, just post below!

iamdarkyoshi got a reaction from Juular in Corsair Grey Label CX750M Burning Smell [Fault Finding And Repair]
I got a CX750M Grey Label PSU (Model 75-002019) for free from a friend's friend. I was told it was making hot smells, so of course I had to test this myself.

And it sure as heck did, I connected it to some old hardware to put a load on it, and it STANK. It did actually stay running, however.

It was making an awful burning smell, but it didn't smell like burning semiconductor. I asked Corsair if I could RMA it without a proof of purchase, and to make a long story short... No.

So that meant I could do my favourite thing:

    Void that pesky warranty sticker

Once I was inside, I looked around on the board for things that look like they got hot.

I instantly noticed that this inductor looked a bit... burnt. Its supposed to be copper coloured like the shield behind it.

The capacitor next to it also looks like the radiant heat from the inductor discoloured the outer shell

Lets get those capacitors out of the way for a better look:

Something is clearly wrong here. I removed the shield as well, which had a skidmark on it

Lets remove that inductor as well, to see what the heck happened to it.

That certainly explains what was making the heat and smells...

But why did it fail? I took a closer look, and next to where the skidmark on the shield was, there appeared to be a short where two windings touched.

I unwrapped the inductor, and the insulation just flaked off the wire, and that suspect area was really burnt. I measured a short between the two windings, which confirmed my suspicions.

Here's what it looks like with the thick winding removed.

These windings sure got hot. I definitely cannot reuse this wire, the insulation is literally flaking off.

This inductor had twelve windings with the single conductor, which was 1mm thick. In the same direction was the four paralleled windings of 1.25mm wires, also twelve windings.

I've bought some replacement wire of the same gauge, so I can rewind this inductor. I have also cleaned and painted the ferrite ring with engine enamel to re-insulate it since the original paint had been burned off.

I should have a result this week documenting the repair.

What I'm hoping was that this was a manufacturing defect causing the windings to short, perhaps due to being wound too tightly, not a failure somewhere else on the power supply.

I'd be interested to see Corsair's response, I know we have quite a few reps on the forum now!
