  1. As others have said, mint is not a bad start. It feels like your more want recommindations on what UI to use. Main Linux mint is ubuntu based (as others have said) so anything ubuntu should be easy to test out. It would be the desktop swap to choose. KDE desktop looks good and current at the time looks to be very windows like and fimilar. I have not used this much but feels good. Cosmic from POP OS! is a good choice for me. A variant of Gnome, with some tweeks. They also have the cosmic desktop coming out next year (looks to have a whole bunch of features the I have never seen impliment in linux) but unless you like the gnome/mac like desktop then that may not be what your looking for. If you want to get away from Ubuntu (and the snap etc) debian or Arch should be the go. Both are slightly more advanced than Ubuntu with installing and setup but nothing that cannot be done if following the guide (Debian is way easier in this instance). Also there are plenty of Youtube guides on this.
  2. almost sounds like fan noise, have you ruled that out? Does it stop once in windows? I would make sure speakers are disconnected to rule out the groud noise suggested I woulk also see if stopping any of the fans stops the noise, this will help narrow it down.
  3. Having a 5800X myself I can see the appleal esp witht the price going down But as others have said, there would be not much bennifet over what you have already. I would only switch the mb if it died or you really need the PCI Gen 4 slots. Otherwise that system should be awesome for a while longer.
  4. I have not used mine since the brand name change announcement but I dont see there being to much change apart from the name. I am not even sure they will highlight the name change on the device it self. Even if it did it would have a little annimation to do it. The casual users prob would not care to much, as long as you still get to use the apps you have purchased it should be ok. I myself am looking forwared to un linking my FB account from it. I have not once used any of the FB connections on it and will not miss it.
  5. I have recently used this software to swap ssd's my self. It does work well. I went from a nvme 950 pro to a nvme 980 pro.
  6. your CPU and ram speed would play the biggest factor here but I have a few questions. Is it every game? what settings are you running in these games that are affected? have you tried changing the settings? What connection are you running to the display? (I am assuming DP but want to check) This monitor is only 1080p from what I can find. The cpu would show its limitation... another thing to check if for a bios updated (that supports your CPU)
  7. found something that could help. Alt+F12 removed the counter on icue for me https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/forums/geforce-experience/14/207809/turn-off-fps-counter-on-applications/
  8. depending on the model used, you could also monitor power draw.
  9. hmm the only thing that comes to mind is the power profile. There was issues with intel gpu drivers that would do something like that but on a system level if the power state was not set to high performance. Also maybe try turning off GPU acceleration in the browser to see if that makes a deference
  10. this! if you have no plans on using it for gaming, you could use them to load up something like PF sense and use it to power your home network. I am looking at doing this myself with some old AMD hardware.
  11. wow they look awesome myself i use a K70 RGB and a M65 RGB but this would be more for a friend of mine that is still using a Microsoft intellimouse and only just got a thermaltake mech keyboard recently.
  12. this would be a nice bump up from the 960 i am running
  13. as the guys above have stated, probably no. From the motherboard you listed it should be a decent on board sound card. If you are getting static you may have to look at how it is connected and what your listing though it with. Are you connecting though the front panel headers or from the back? are you using a headset or speakers (or both) and what brand/ model are you using? and the other fact is what is the £30 sound card? (it is very likely that your on board would be better)
  14. yeah it will work, you would just need to look at the software to config the speaker setup. if it is the same motherboard in your sig then it should be ok sound. You may hear a difference if you go a dedicated sound card (PCI/E or USB ). I have not trusted onboard sound for a while now (bought first decent sound card in 2008). sound-blaster-x-fi-xtreme-audio-pci-express this was my first experience with better sound and i have not looked back. To be honest this was me and for some people they would not hear the difference. But if you have the budget i would suggest at lest trying a sound card of some sort.
  15. from my experience it would depend more on the sound card and the config more than the speakers (at this lvl) When I was using Z906 5.1 speakers most of the time it came out as 2.1. it does not look like there is any processing done in the speakers so it may actually be what you set on the sound card.
  16. Mine depends on what it runs Gaming PC: Alucard Lan Laptop : Seras net laptop: Walter Linux Laptop: Zangetsu Nas : Tardis Jr (use to have a server called Tardis but things happened and have not changed this) Windows PC's are named after Hellsing. Any Linux PC i run gets named after Bleach swords and well the NAS has always been the TARDIS, i really should get around to painting it blue one day.
  17. From my experience (mostly windows and Mac) the more on the desktop (that being large in file size or large in number of files) reduces the performance of the OS itself. From what I understand the items on the desktop tend to be the most active and ready to be used. The more items on the desktop tend to put a strain on the OS to keep those files active. In windows 7 (what i mostly support now) depending on the HW config I have seen a Pc that would take 10 min to log in and open up the normal startup apps (lync; Symantec etc.) to logging in about 3 min after the clean up. On the Mac OS (10.7.x when i last used it properly) it can be the same as windows. From memory i had one user accidentally drop over 10,000 files on the desktop and watch it grind to a halt as it tried to process everything. I had to get them to login as Root and move the files from the desktop in there user to a folder on the OS drive before they could log in again. I have never made the mistake on Linux (nor do i plan to test this) so i don't know but i have a feeling that it would behave similar to the mac os, this is depending if the desktop is actively set to show folders as well.
  18. some of the most highly educated people are some of the most technological inept. I don't know how many times I have to quote IT Crowd's "have you tried turning it off and on again" One of the most common things I have to repeat is "please don't save all your work on your desktop" they are always surprised how much better a PC works when there is not 20GB sitting on the desktop.
  19. this would make an awesome steam os box. if not that it would be an awesome lan box as well!!
  20. ram and gpu would the the biggest thing as others have said. win 8 i have found enjoys the extra legroom with the ram. 8 GB seems to be the sweet spot for a lot of things now days. a gpu update every couple of years is a good way to go.
