if you need a new one, get a 1440p, windows isnt ready for 4k, nor are tons of commonly used third party apps. and this is coming from a user of a high res panel.

Son of Mike got a reaction from JaydenThatcher in Editing/Gaming Build! But will it work?
With the video editing, length of video doesn't impact on system resources in the same way. So getting the fastest multi core cpu is useful regardless (six core 2011?), but RAM and GPU acceleration aren't quite the same. RAM is important for multi camera editing, while GPU is useful for rendering and effects. For example I edit hour long SD footage, and use up to 70% of my 16gb of RAM, and just use onboard graphics as I can edit in real time perfectly well - and I don't use AE.
One area you might want to look into is a SSD scratch disk, and also a fast HDD like a WD Black. HDD's have a significant impact on editing time. One of the things with editing rigs is that it's best to see what works with your workflow. For example try 2x8GB ram fist, and if you need it then upgrade with another two sticks, same with the gpu, try one first and see how much it is loaded during your exporting etc.

I don't know which editing software you use but in Adobe Premier Pro CC you can use your GPU to render video's which does significantly reduce render times.
BTW (especially when you have added a GPU ) it looks like a killer video editing setup!

They did something wrong with the installation, the wrench part need to be done outside the case. The installation is actualy pretty easy. I suspect perfomance impact from the weird installation.

First put the screw and place the ruber on it."Don't forget the backplate."

Then assemble all the other parts before the aligment."Don't put the thermal past on the cooler this is not my picture."

Then put TIM on the cpu, align the cooler with the screws already on the motherboard and tight it from the back plate.

Got this one in my case and it performs almost as good as it looks. I was going for a quiet as possible build so I went for this one even if it would result in a little bit hotter CPU. I can barely hear my computer, I don,t have any decibel measurement tools but its really quiet even under full load and gaming.
Under full load I have never seen it over 68*C and its just so damn quiet. It also looks really good (the reason I don't have a single noctua fan in my computer).
But when it comes to mounting..... holy S**** it was painful. I have a asus Formula VI motherboard and I actually had to cut of some of the foam on the back plate so it could fit under the armor. I also had to get my GF to help me with the fan connectors since its so damn big and I could not reach anything after mounting it. When I tried I ended up with cutting myself on the damn thing.
    *IMPORTANT*
What linus is saying about high profile ram is not a problem unless you want to use 4 sticks. I'm using two sticks of Corsair dominator platinum and it fits right under the fan. What I had to do tho was mounting the front fan as far up as possible on the cooler. If you do so you could fit three stick of high profile ram (but I think its a mm clearance so nothing higher than the corsair dominator platinum). But the heatsink is blocking one Ram slot.
I wont give it a top score because of the mounting pain, but everything else is solid.

You really should do test with included fans and then with aftermarket fans. Also please say something about noise levels?

For anyone who is wondering how much noise these fans make then if you are silence freak you wont be dissapointed as they are dead silent. I am runing 3x Fractal R2 fans on 5V and when my CPU is on full load (overclocked to 4GHz) Then I cant hear fans on my Dark Rock Pro 2 over those Fractal fans which are also very silent when they are runing on 5V.

    Hi everyone,

So as you may or may not know I went on an ambitious journey to watercool a SG33G5 Shuttle with a Q9550 and GTX750Ti. Long story short, I killed the motherbroad during the build process. If you want to look at that story see the build log >HERE<

I sold of what I could and began the hunt for a replacement HTPC build. Now this build wont be the most exciting, but It should give you a good base if you wanted to do something similar, I will make alternate recommendations as I go through but for the most part wanted to write in a guide for setting up XBMC, HyperSpin and such.

I priced up an i3 4150, Asus H97i Plus and 8gb or Mem and that came to $358. As I wasn't in a rush I had a look around some local forums hoping I could get something suitable a bit cheaper.

Turns out I didn't get anything cheaper, it was the same price, but much more powerful. I know power isn't normally required for a HTPC build but I run an ambient lighting system that effectively is running screen capture software constantly, I also wanted to use HyperSpin and could use the grunt for PS1/PS2 and Wii emulation, also I was unsure of what would be dependent on Steam Game Stream working well. To understand the Ambilight setup have a look at the guide I did >HERE<

So this is what I ended up with for $370.

    A 3570k
Gigabyte Z77N-Wifi (This is actually awesome with on-board Bluetooth that I will use later in the setup)
    Corsair 2x 4gb XMS Memory
    BitFenix Prodigy case
    Silverstone Strider 600w PSU.
    No GPU and NO HDD/SSD's

Pictures after picking it up. As the Case and PSU are getting changed out I will sell these off to recover some more cost.

    Oh so orange...

    Whatch'ya hiding in there!

    And quickly, stripped.

Now that's out and put aside lets take a closer look.

A tidy little board actually! Dual HDMI + DVI onboard and dual NICs plus the WiFi/Bluetooth combo mentioned earlier.

Now some new parts to go with this build.

The case! A Silverstone ML07 HTPC 'Gaming" case. There isn't a lot of info on this case around yet but I went with it because of the very slim/entertainment unit friendly form, but it still allows for a dual slot GPU.
    Box

    Front

    Back

    Insides

To be honest I really like the layout of this case, but the quality isn't the best. The plastic around the outside feels a bit nasty. Also the power on button on the front is hard to locate blindly.

I also decided to get a new CPU cooler to replace the stock item
    A Noctua L9i

    Box

Packaging - OMG best packaging i've ever seen.

Profile - Look how cute it is!

The GPU for this build is the same card that was intended for the Shuttle build, the EVGA GTX750Ti FTW. A card like this certainly isn't needed for a HTPC however for GameStream I think it will be ideal.

Now the Silverstone ML07 needs an SFX PSU. Silverstone are doing some awesome stuff in the SFX department with a 600w Gold version on the way and I think a 450w 120mm semi-passive version on the way as well. However for now I got the 450w-Gold version. Overkill for my needs.

    Hehe - Hi there!

And for size comparison to show how small it actually is.

Removed the CPU for a clean and new HSF install.

3570k, such overkill. I'll undervolt and then try up the clock a touch to see if I can get some free clocks without adding additional heat.

    And Noctua Cooler installed.

Now The PC is together and working however it will come apart for a bit of a tidy-up and maybe a time-lapse build. I'll update this post as I go.

    Thanks for stopping by!

The below posts will be a XBMC setup guide, a HyperSpin guide and a Performance comparison, Gamestream with a GTX780TI in the host or using the GTX750Ti.

Personally I prefer 1440p for desktop usage. 4k scaling is not perfect and it can make some text and icons too small to read.

And the super wide monitors I dont like the aspect ratio, I like having some height to my displays as websites and lot of content is quite vertical. Also not all games support it

WD caviar green is a terrible HDD for what you are doing is it not designed to be used as a main disk. It is a very slow HDD for write and read it is designed for storage!
    http://www.buildcomputers.net/western-digital-caviar.html
As you can see WD green has slow access times and speeds it is not meant as a main disk even budget PC's don't use it.
If you use an SSD instead you will have at least 10x faster read!!
If you are honestly using that HDD as a main disk even a 4930k@5Ghz will not fix it!

Son of Mike got a reaction from ZealousGam3r in Good Workstation Graphics Cards?
Hi @ZealousGam3r, I don't have experience with either, so I can't answer your question directly.  However, with workstations some of the decisions such as GPU will be made for you.  First and foremost the programs you're looking at using, which cards are they certified for, then the mobo that you're looking at what is that certified for.  Aside from that in regards to the monitor, I'm guessing that you already have a 10 bit monitor, but in case you don't I thought it was worth mentioning that the PB monitors you're looking at don't support 10 bit to my understanding, you'd need to go to the Asus PA series for that.

Outside of the above, with the workstation cards performance is only part of what you're paying for.  So in making your decision look at warranty, is one better than the other - for example how quickly can they sort an issue out for you.  Limiting downtime is a big part of what you're paying for, so ensure that whichever card you get will give you value for money on this aspect.

If you have the inclination, I'd love to see your build blog when it all comes together.  And read your thoughts on how its all performing for you.

Here's a comparison which might be helpful:
