Make sure you don't have it muted on the in-line control.

Check your connection, check your sound control panel for default device, etc.

Plug it into another device and see if it works. If it does, then you know it's something on your system. If not, then you know it's the headphones.

the only device i can easily get to only has a headphone port

Is it a mac? Macs do not have audio jack power. (You need an amp)
