Dedicated graphics?

IreMinMon

So, I've been thinking of buying the new ThinkPad Yoga 15 when it comes out with Skylake CPUs.

Since it only comes with the 15W CPUs, I will probally get a Core i5 Skylake with Intel Iris 540 graphics.

Now tell me guys. And be honest with it.
There is also a nvidia geforce 840M dedicated graphics option. I know this card is shit. I don't need graphics performance, but I wouldn't mind some. Money is not really the problem. Just tell me, how would the dedicated graphics option affect the laptop weight and battery life. thank you in advance.

if you got a dedicated gpu (this is the 840m so it's pretty damn power efficient) then iirc nvidia's graphics switching thingy that i forget what it was called will switch to the dedicated gpu when needed or when set to.

Check out my guide on how to scan cover art here!

Weight? no difference

battery life the more powerful the GPU the greater the powerdraw, it can be considerate

but that GPU is pretty pants and honestly not much point getting it, when the intel GPU is pretty powerful these days

If you are trying to save battery get it without. Otherwise check some benchmarks on the 840m and hd 540

PC is Intel Core i5 6400, GIgabyte H170 Gaming 3, Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x4GB 2400Mhz ,Sandisk Ultra Plus 128GB, WD Blue 1TB, NZXT S340, ASUS Geforce GTX 960. Fractal Design Tesla R2 650W. http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/793XNG. Graphics card choices don't always have to be dictated on performance. If you want the game stream and power consumption of the GTX 970 get that. If you want raw performance of the R9 390 get that. In the end we are all gamers, so what if your buddy gets an extra 5 fps?

Nvidia graphics switching thingy? Shouldn't the driver be enough?

I'm pretty much entirely concerned about poewr usage when doing graphically unintensive work. Like web browsing or movie watching. As far as I know, the GPU is always running, and even when it's not calculating anything at all, the power consumption is pretty high.

What I'm interested is numbers, charts. I wonder if anyone of you guys knows how different would it be if I was, let's say, watching movies, how would a dedicated graphics scenario compare to the no dedicated graphics scenario.
