So, I'm thinking of renewing my subscription and starting a pvp character.
I've never done pvp before and was wondering, does pvp happen anywhere in the world or are there certain places you need to go so you can fight.
I worry about just getting steam rolled over and over again when trying to level my character up.

It depends on the realm type. 

If you're on a PvE realm, you won't get flagged for PvP in the world (you can still do arenas and battlegrounds or world PvP with players that are flagged for PvP)

If you're on a PvP realm you're always flagged for PvP.

Generally people won't bother killing you while you level (unless they're assholes)

PVP happens anywhere in the world if you are on a PVP server. You can do organized small scale PVP in arena, or organized large scale PVP in battlegrounds. Both require PVP gear that can be earned in a ton of different ways (or an early basic set can be crafted). I liked WoW PVP for a long time, but then I got in Mobas and kinda never looked back frankly. You can also buy a boost to level 90 and then blast to 100 and get right into organized PVP.
