Motherboard swap without windows re-install

f3rnando97

Linus tech tip forums,

I am in need of some guidance here. As the title says I am getting a new motherboard and need to delete the drivers off my old one so that when the OS boots up on the new MOBO the drivers of the old MOBO wont cause an issue. I know it is not recommend that I do this but I'm at a crossroad with a tight budget and cannot afford an OS. My current MOBO is an N-Alvorix-RS880. I will be upgrading it to a Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 (rev. 6.0). I need to know what and which kind of drivers to delete and how to do it. I know that its risky and that it would be more time effective to just do a clean install. As i've stated i dont have that option.

Thanks!

Also i forgot to say that im on windows 7 64bit

ive used sysprep to generalize installations to install new hardware.  It works but I would recommend reinstalling after getting the new hardware booted up with windows because I always get little frustrating issues that pop up, but it allows you to get the install onto that new pc and then you should be able to reinstall without a problem.  Do you still have the activation key/is it printed on a sticker if it is a premade like HP (i think it is)

Yea it did come premade and it's HP. Where would this sticker be found. On the tower?

yeah probably, could be somewhere inside the case too.    you may be able to get it out of the registry either manually or with some sort of software.

  • 3 weeks later...

Wait... If I have a new MOBO and didn't re-install windows, will this cause a problem? Because my PC's working fine so far without it...
