You might want to bump that up a tad bit...there aren't very many cheap gaming laptops. Either you pay a good amount or nothing

NEVER GIVE UP. NEVER STOP LEARNING. DONT LET THE PAST HURT YOU. YOU CAN DOOOOO IT

You need strong CPU horsepower for that.

I'd go with something like this:

CPU: Intel Core i3-4160 3.6GHz Dual-Core Processor  ($108.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-B85M-GAMING 3 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($51.98 @ Newegg)
Memory: Kingston Fury Black Series 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory  ($51.99 @ Newegg)

Video Card: PowerColor Radeon R9 270 2GB TurboDuo Video Card  ($148.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Case: Fractal Design Core 1100 MicroATX Mini Tower Case  ($34.99 @ Newegg)

The new i3s pack a real punch when it comes to single threaded performance. Any 1150 socket mobo will do, this is cheap and has most features you could need. Min 8GB ram (you don't really loose performance by going with a single stick instead of dual channel, this way you can upgrade later) + 1TB HDD, no less than that.

Good enough case and PSU (these can vary, there are different options at this price).

The best GPU at this price ($150) is the R9 270 2GB.

All he needs is Windows 7. When Windows 10 is released everyone with Windows 7/8 will get to upgrade to 10 for free
