Upgrading GPU On A Dell Optiplex 9020

LumLum

Hello I have a Dell Optiplex 9020 with a NVIDIA GeForce GT 630 and I'm looking to upgrade it, but the problem is that the Optiplex 9020 only has a custom 8 pin plug for the PSU so I can't really get a new one since all or most PSU's are 24 pin. The dude at the store recommended the GTX 750 ti 2gb GDDR5 ( not sure if those last 2 things matter but just in case ) and he said it would be safe to add it to the build since it doesn't use an external cable or something about not using the PSU and getting the power from the motherboard, so as you can see I'm quite confused on that part. I tested things out in PSU calculators and I seem to get a recommendation of 300 w. On the spec list for the GTX 750 ti a 300w PSU is recomended, BUT, on the GT 650 spec list, a 300w PSU is recommended ( and i have 290w ) and i have been having no problems ( random shutdowns, explosions, world domination ... ). Plox help me Linus mustard race  :(

Just in case here is my build:

-Intel Core i7 4790 @ 3.60GHz Haswell 22nm Technology

-32.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 798MHz   ( don't ask, it was really cheap )

-Motherboard Dell Inc. 06X1TJ (SOCKET 0)

-4095MB NVIDIA GeForce GT 630

-111GB Corsair Force LS SSD ATA Device

-931GB Western Digital WDC WD10EZRX-00L4HB0 ATA Device

-HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GHB0N ATA Device

So you want to replace the 630 with a 750ti?

As long as you get one that doesn't require a 6 pin pcie connector then it should be fine.

I'm a little confused by your post but by my interpretation I would say the PSU's 8 pin to the motherboard shouldn't matter. What does matter is if you have a connector for the graphics card, if it doesn't, if I'm not mistaken a 750 doesn't need a power connector.

Alright thanks guys!
Case closed.

Conclusion: GTX 750 ti is compatible because it doesn't need an external cable - thus it's safe to replace the GT 630. gr8 m8

Make sure you don't get an OC edition for example from Asus, it requires a 6 pin power connector.

I have the optiplex 9020 sff, so I have been searching for the best GPU that can fit in there. So the 750ti fits on the 9020 optiplex sff?if it fits, which versión of the 750 ti is the one that fits?

So I know this is old but for anyone in a similar situation you can use a 24 to 8 pin adapter and use a different power supply. This way you can have whatever video card you want. I have an optiplex 9020 and this it's what I'm doing. I have a gtx 970 installed.
