Need to Decide on a laptop for college

Chankills

Hey so I've been really debating about what to bring to college, my old xps 15 is just to bulky for me to want to heave around campus and wanted something slimmer. I was also wondering if getting a surface pro would be worth it (however I'm going into a writing intensive major so I don't know how well it would be able to write papers with). I already have a gaming desktop that I bring to college but I wanted to upgrade the gpu if I bring it to college (its a 290 now) but if I get an expensive laptop (1K+) I probably can't afford an upgrade. So I was wondering on whether to get an ultra book or a slimmer gaming laptop ( looking at the razer blade 2014 or the msi gs60).

Any suggestions would help!

Perhaps the Dell XPS 13? It seems pretty dank. (Starting at $800, though I'd go for the $1000 model as you get an i5 5200U, 8GB of RAM, 128GB SSD, or you could go for the $900 model for 4GB of RAM instead of 8GB, or the $800 model for an i3  5010U and 4GB of RAM instead)

Specs: CPU - Intel i7 8700K @ 5GHz | GPU - Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Motherboard - ASUS Strix Z370-G WIFI AC | RAM - XPG Gammix DDR4-3000MHz 32GB (2x16GB) | Main Drive - Samsung 850 Evo 500GB M.2 | Other Drives - 7TB/3 Drives | CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i Pro | Case - Fractal Design Define C Mini TG | Power Supply - EVGA G3 850W

Plus, Linus proved that it is indeed water proof

I have looked at the 13 it just seems the storage space is really small and in order to get it to 8gb ram its 1700

Nope, you can get the i5 and 8GB of RAM for $1000, go re-read the options listed on the dell page for it.

And I'd say you don't really need an upgrade for your pc if you've got a 290 right now, at least not for a year or two.

XPS 13 would be a great choice if you want to slim down from the 15.  I also like the Asus RoG laptops, but im not sure any are smaller than the XPS 15.

I would recommend the Lenovo T450S. My specific recommendation would be:

i5-5200U

1600 * 900 (900P) Display

8GB RAM

16GB M.2 SSD
500GB HDD

Granted its a little heavy, but it still meets the ultrabook standard.

I agree with getting the Dell XPS 13. Light, compact and thin. Have been using it for months now and it has been working flawlessly. The performance ain't bad either, it van play most titles with a playable fps on low settings, 1080p. Overall a great laptop, have a think about the XPS 13. :)
