So I found an Asus R9 290x Direct CU II and a Sapphire R9 290x Tri-X for $280. Which card is quieter and has better performance?

Well, I think it is one of the quietest and coolest 290x's besides the Lightning

The asus one runs hot and loud

hes not reffering to the noise, its the reliability you get from sapphire. they develop the reference pcb for amd, they know the gpu best and have great customer service

Sapphire is ATi exclusive, and the best option to go for.
