RAID: onboard Z97 controller or PCIe raid card?

Gdourado

Hello, how are you?

I am wondering if the onboard raid of the Z97 chipset is comparable to a stand alone raid card like a high point 2720 SGL.

What is the difference between running a raid0 SSD config from the board or from the high point?

Any big performance differences?

Thanks.

Cheers!

Well, I have no experience with the 2720 SGL. However, why not just try using the Z97 because it will be better to not spend A LOT of money on it. (They are about £100/$148)

Quick question, RAID 0 on SSD's? The performance is not noticeable that much.

While the RAID card is the better option in terms of reliability, options and performance...It's not worth the price unless you're putting a load of drives in RAID.

The performance difference between 1 SSD and 2 in RAID 0 is not noticeable.

For your intended purpose the only difference you would notice would be cost.  I doubt you would be able to tell, and you may not be able to boot from the highpoint card.
