I am in a bit of a dilemma

So today I returned my Zenbook and got a refund because the touch-screen was acting up (it was the second time I had returned it FYI) so I have around $1600 to spend on a laptop for school (overkill I know, but it has to last), now $300 of that money is mine, the rest is my parents. So here are my options.

 

Get a 15.6 inch laptop with decent enough specs (Quad core i7, 820-840m, 8gbs ram, 750-1tb hdd) for under $1K and get the $300 of my own money back to spend on other things (e.g. a new monitor)

 

or get a 13.3 inch laptop with better specs then the 15.6 inch laptop (quad core i7, 860m, 16gbs ram, 128 gb ssd + 1tb hdd, http://www.kongcomputers.com/product-detail/gamers/metabox-prime-w230ss-ctg03.aspx) for $1600 and still not have the $300 of my own money.

 

My uses would be school work, web browsing, autodesk inventor, maybe some editing and occasional games like cod WaW and other basic games

 

It NEEDS to last me until grade 12 which is in 3 years

 

EDIT - the other option is to go half way, with a 15.6 inch gaming laptop from msi, it is half way in the middle for prices (http://www.kongcomputers.com/product-detail/gamers/msi-ge60-apache-2pl-660au.aspx)

ok, I will keep that in mind, I have found my 13.3 inch zenbook was a great size for school before I returned it, but everyone else pretty much takes a 15.6 inch laptop to school just fine, the price difference is quite a lot.

This comes from experience. Your back will appreciate the much more book size 13.3 incher to the humongous 15.6 inches. I went and bought a Surface 10.6 inch sized, laptop because all it does is write word documents. I used to have a 15.6 inch laptop. The extra space on the desk is definitely worth it. BTW I shoved the extra money into my WC loop.

I'm like 6'5" and it was still uncomfortable. The Surface is sized pretty much like a sheet of A4. Pleas don't get a gaming laptop. It'll just be heavier, and more enjoyable after school. I support the 13.3 inch one because of convenience.

I meant the 15.6 inch one. The 13.3 can be a supercomputer one and still nor be as heavy.

get something decent that has a extra m.2 slot or extra sata slot, and get a  ssd afterwards.

 

for what you are doing, slightly better graphics and 16gb of ram is not worth it, yo u can upgrade ram and you have a desktop, so you dont need to game hardcore

yes, because the ssd will matter for every day usage but you dont need much gpu if you are not gaming on it. I would go as far as to say gett the cheapest shit with a ssd or the ability to put a ssd into it

I can vouch for the W230SS being a good machine. It has two mSATA SSD slots and one HDD slot, and the 860M is about a 750Ti which is fine for the light gaming you'd want to do.

 

Good luck with it! It gets my vote. I'm really sorry you need to pay so much for those things in AUS.

I think I will go for the 13.3 inch beast. It could provably replace my desktop for most things

Thanks, I think that is what I will go for, I think $300 of my own money is worth it, considering that I could sell my main rig and use this if I needed. The configuration that I am going for has a 128gb msata SSD and a 1tb hdd. That should be plenty. And if I feel I need it, I could get another msata SSDwhen they come down in price
