Weird clicky noises

So as per the recommendations I got, I changed my HDD after it became really slow and started making noises. Thank you. :3

But recently one of my ram gave out, I was running 4gbs and one of them just decided to burn up and give off a smell, so I took it out. Now when I play league of Legends or do anything, my hdd (the new one) makes weird clicky noises, and every time it does that my game hangs for 2 seconds or so and starts again. Is it because I don't have enough ram? Or something?

I'm running a i3(530), motherboard dh55pj and gtx 550ti and running Windows 8.1.

Cheers.

:D

I assume you only have 2GB now? Your system is likely flushing some data to the page file and therefore are hitting your RAM limit.

It sounds like you might be running out of ram and its writing to the hard drive as virtual memory.

Thanks, and yes I currently have only 2GBs of ram. So basically if increase my ram, I should be fine?

And I'm not really understanding all the technical terms, could you guys elaborate a bit? Noob here.

The page file is a section of the drive that is dedicated to RAM. If the system runs out of it, Windows will look for content in memory that hasn't been used in a while. It'll then take that content and flush it to that section of the drive. Yes, if you increase your memory to at least 4GB, you should be fine.

I think you will be, I cant be 100% on the matter but im fairly confident.

A computer needs ram, ram is random access memory, its used when a program needs to save something quick but on a temporary basis.

When you run out of ram windows will start using your hard drive in place of it as "virtual memory" it will temporarily save to the HDD and wipe that data as needed, the issue is hard drives are a hell of alot slower then RAM, so it keeps your system working/probably prevents blue screens its hardly great to use it

To minimize the effect when you try and game shut down as much as you can to the least amount of ram is being used, or even do a full reboot before gaming to make sure all memory you can use is available.

This is of course just a temp solution to make it less obnoxious til you get your 4gb back

Side note if you wanna be sure this is the issue download MSI afterburner (other things will do this but this is probably one of the more simple ways/what I thought of off the top of my head.

http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/msi-afterburner-beta-download.html (you dont need MSI hardware for it)

Run afterburner then your game and play for a bit til you get that whole click slow down thing, then tab out and check afterburner. if you look though the line graphs you will see a ram useage one, and you can easily tell if you are hitting your 2gb limit.

Noted, I'm fairly new to PC tech. I only built my 1st system in 09 and used hand me downs before that. There are plenty more on here who know a ton more then me. While I have learned...book loads since building that comp ya there is still much to learn :)

If you can, try to avoid using the RAM slot that the unfortunate stick got burnt in.

Could have died to power related issue. Might want to check that your RAM is operating at its specified voltage (never more than 1.65V for DDR3. Many models are built for 1.5V or lower)

Avoiding mixing sticks of different model. Different manufacturer is worse. Different operating speed and voltage is asking for disaster.

Well, I have used my other ram stick in the place of the burnt stick slot. Worked fine, and both the rams are running equal speeds although of different manufacturers. TwinMos and Team Elite (Don't judge, it's a third world country with lots of strikes and all can't get other manufacturers here. xD). And how do I check the voltages?

I have MSI afterburner, but isn't that for GPUs?

Btw I haven't really tinkered alot with that software.

You can check alot on MSI afterburner, its ment for overclocking GPUS but comes with monitoring software called rivatuner

Rivatuner moniters everything from GPU temps, GPU use VRam use to CPU temps, CPU Use Ram use and some stuff I dont even know what it is.

All of this should be viewable on the MSI afterburner program if you look though those line graphs enough.

In the bios. To enter your bios, mash the Delete button when the computer is booting up.

The voltage that your sticks should be running at can be found on its original packaging and manual. Otherwise you'll have to search for it online.

Don't change random stuff if you don't know what they are. If you observe any oddities, best ask people here before trying to do something about it.

Oh and one more thing, I also have a laptop with 2GBs of ram and 320gbs of HDD. When I play League, there is no clicky noise but there is the overall slowing down, is it also due to insufficient ram?

Most likely, various drives have different noises I cant hear mine at all even though I have 3 of them in my system.

The only thing that perplexs me is that I used to run into this issue ALOT, like daily on this old ass win 98, upgraded to xp machine that I was using til mid 2009. And when I ran into this issue a popup would come up stating the system ran out of memory and was going to use virtual memory so it was very clear that you had run into the problem.

Maybe win8 (I think thats what you said you were on) gets rid of that warning though for some reason.

I think so too.

I've been running this rig for the past 5/6 years, using it only for league and media consumption. Never ran into this issue, unit now.

But thanks though.
