Wait for Broadwell or get Devil's Canyon now?

mkil5
First of all I am not it a huge huge need to upgrade (I don't think).  I am mainly just a gamer but when I bought my motherboard it essentially came with a G3258 for free.  Well the plan all along has been to eventually upgrade to an i5.

I know this is a question that is not totally answerable at this time.  But what would be the benefits of waiting on the new Broadwell chips when they come out.  What kind of performance and features would they improve with?

Or should I just now get a Devil's Canyon.  Like I said, I believe that I can wait the 6+ months for Broadwell if it would be worth it.

Also, since I already have my Z97 board, waiting even longer on Skylake is kind of out of the questions since I don't want to have to buy an 1151 board.

Please let me know.

Thanks

It's all going to be if you want buy a new motherboard. If you don't then you have your answer. Move to something like a 4690k or 4790k. The last few cpu's have only been incrementally better, I don't suspect a huge change, maybe just a lot more power efficient

Broadwell will be about the same performance as Haswell -- the improvements are going to be with the iGPU.

So, if you don't need a cpu now, then you might as well wait for Broadwell for E-peen, if your current cpu isn't enough for you, then just go Haswell.

Hmmm if you're not really in need of an upgrade, why not wait for skylake? And by then save up some money for a new gpu, i7 and mobo

Longboarders/ skaters message me!

Broadwell is literally Haswell using more power efficient transistors.  The actual chip design is no different, except beefier integrated graphics.  There won't be any performance benefits worth mentioning.  It's honestly better not to think of Broadwell as a different product from Haswell.  They're the same thing.

Intel won't release skylake K cpus until (*June) of 2016 ,so I suggest go for broadwell K I7  instead of haswell I7.

Broadwell K will be released in June or July of 2015.

I don't think that intel will release Skylake K in 2015, but only Skylake S .

Why? Broadwell is on the same Z97 mobo´s.

Its nothing more then just a haswell refresh again with some improvements on the igpu.

Which does not matter.

Just go with DC, waiting for broadwell on the same platform is realy not worth it.

Because it only has an improvement on the igpu mainaly, which you will most likely never use.

There is really no reason to wait for Broadwell since it will yield the exact same performance as Haswell +/- a percent or two.

Indeed people should not confuse broadwell with skylake.

Broadwell will be on the same Z97 platform, and is basicly nothing more then a haswell refresh again.

Just a few improvements on the igpu mainaly, which most people never use.

Skylake will be a totaly new platform, based on socket 1151 with Z170 and H170 chipsets, with DDR4 support

I personaly dont see any reason why intel should even bother with releasing broadwell.

But yeah they "probably" do this for time winning, to get their Z170 series chipsets right.

Broadwell and skylake will be released at the same time.

However skylake will only get locked cpu´s, on which broadwell will be unlocked.

Skylake unlocked cpu´s will be there in 2016.

I agree with you that if you have a I5-I7 haswell it doesn't worth to go for a broadwell.

Skylakes will be the 5th gen of intel core CPUs right ? or it will be the 6th gen with DDR4 ? i'm i'm right about 5th gen then why intel said Z97 chipset will support Haswell/Haswell refreshers/ and 5th Gen core CPUs?

second why intel is calling boradwell a 5th gen if only igpu is better then HW or HWRs coz Board well is useless kind of relese coz if someone is buying K and 5th gen he probably will never use igpu and as i know companies and offices now using 2nd gen core for even management they only need igpus coz normally they don't use GPUs in offices . then why intel is deceiving us with just a market filler ?

Skylake will be 6th gen. It will use both DDR4 and DDR3 (it will be dependant on which motherboard you buy)

i have a Z97K Asus so i need to buy new board to mount a skylake or i can put skylake on it with bios upgard but compromise on performence ?

You'll need a new motherboard for skylake, although I really wouldn't worry about it, since it still probably won't be worth upgrading to unless you have to be running multiple top of the line GPUs, as even a Sandy Bridge i7 is perfectly good for gaming today.

So a DC i5 4690K with 16gb corsiar 1600 and R9 270OC Asus will be good for next 2-3 years of gaming ?

Go with Devil's Canyon, or wait for Skylake.  As everyone above has said - Broadwell is just better efficiency and better integrated GPU, which most people use a dedicated card anyway, so not worth the wait.  Devil's Canyon should give a few good years of solid performance and all, given that games still barely utilize more cores, so it should be poifect.

The issue will be the 270, not the 4690k; even now a Sandy Bridge i5 will handle gaming just fine when paired with something like a GTX980 -- albeit it will hold back the 980 to some extent.....Basically an i5-2500k is still perfectly fine for 60fps gaming today. And something to keep in mind is that as time goes on 1080p will start getting phased out in lieu of 4k, which will put much more stress on the gpu than the cpu anyway.
