HTPC record to NAS

HTPC up and running and have a SSD as the OS drive. Have a Thecus N550 and have mapped the drive but Windows 8.1 is not allowing me to choose it as a record drive. I've read it is because the problems of recording over lan/connectivity problems. Would it be better to attach using usb cables or is there a work around via registry. Any help would be.... helpful. I appreciate it.
