Repairing bad sectors and choosing new hdd

rajh95
Hello,

about three weeks ago I scanned my PC with HD Tune Pro and it showed bad sectors. After that I did Error-check in Windows 7 at least twice and I still get errors (for example: Steam update-disc write error) so today i installed Hard Drive Sentinel and this is what i got:

HDD Sentinel

So my question is can I repair bad sectors or is my hdd destroyed? Because I want to wait till Christmas to buy a new one (hoping for discount)  :P

And which hdd should I get:

Seagate 1TB Barracuda - ST1000DM003 7200 rpm, 64 MB

WD Green 1TB WD10EZRX 7200rpm, 64 MB or

WD Blue 1 TB WD10EZEX 7200 rpm, 64 MB

The lowes price for all three of them is 56-57€ in my country.

WD green if you want less power use or WD Blue if you just want a cheaper drive

Thanks for reuploading.

I can't tell much from this, but the heath looks horrible.

I'd say the Barracuda for performance.

I am running surface test in Hard Drive Sentinel i will post results as soon as the test is done.

What about lifespan of the hdd? I read they die quickly...

Seagate drives fail something like 4x more often (over 4-5 years) than WD drives. WD drives failed 1.5-2x as often as Hitachi drives over the same period. Since you are worried about losing data, that means you didn't have any backups. Bad! Because you want a drive to last as long as possible, I'd go with WD.

The green drive will be *significantly* slower in terms of I/O performance than the blue drive will be. That said, both of them are fairly slow to begin with. It's a bit like picking between a car with an i-4 engine and 4 gears vs one with 7 gears. the 7 gear car, in theory, should accelerate faster and reach a higher top speed, but the 4-gear transmission is lighter and simpler. Because both are based on i-4 engines, both will have pretty weak overall capabilities.

Hello!

If the drive is still under warranty, try contacting your manufacturer to get a replacement. Send them the HDTune screenshot and they will usually initiate an RMA for you.

I would personally not recommend the Greens. They don't perform that well and are better suited for Backup than for actual computing. The Blues and the Barracudas on the other hand perform much better. If I did have to make a choice, I would go for the Barracuda based on the benchmarks I am seeing. It's average R/W is 181 MB/s and the WD couterparts is 170 MB/s. However, I would factor things such as customer support and service center locations as well, so do check that out before making a decision.

I hope this helps! :)

Hi there @rajh95!

I think there are too many bad sectors on the disk to perform any repair steps, so my advise is to consider a new one or if your drive is still under warranty - to RMA the drive us:

As for the two WD drives you consider, if you need a primary HDD for your OS, games and programs, I would recommend the WD Blue and in case it is a secondary storage drive you're looking for, then the Green drive will suit better.

Hope this helps.

Cheers! :)
