General Fan Guidelines

Hey all Linus people.

Im building a new pc (wew) and just wondering what you people think are some guidelines when buying fans.

Like what brands to stay/buy.

How loud they should be (dba 20 loud or not?)

How much CFM is good for large/small fans just general help.

Thankyou guys and girls.

What's your budget for fans? What Case will you get (or have already)? Are you watercooling? How many are you need?

I personally stick to name brand products personally brands like coolermaster, corsair, noctua.

I have the Corsair Sp120 X5, the reason being, that they look awesome (three different colors that you can match your system with) and work pretty work and are quiet.

Also please dont get corsairs high performance edition fans, they are super LOUD (35 DBA!!!) Had to buy some 8 volt adapters. The quiet editions are awesome!

Personally I wouldnt wanna spend more than $20 per fan to be honest is that bad? Can I get decent, quiet fans for this price.

Its going to be all air cooling.

Going to be a mini ITX case and most likely the case will be a Bitfenix Prodigy.

Bitfenix fans are good already and Prodigy comes with 2(?) so you might not need anymore. I'm currently switching fans from NZXT to Bitfenix Spectre Pro's. As for CFM, that is relevant when you compare it to fan speed and noise. Try to find fans with low noise and good cfm. Surprisingly, there aren't many which can deliver... if your only criteria in design is black on black.

CFM comes more important when you are thinking about how inside airflow will work. Generally you want more air coming into case than going out. Prodigy is bit tricky on that side and good configuration depends on CPU cooling you will be using. Browse around here, you will find plenty of topics discussing about different configs with that case.

The quality, performance, and sound signatures of fans will generally vary even from the same brand. There aren't so many brands to recommend than individual lines/models.

Sound signature will generally matter more than dBA and dBA as well as CFM specs aren't always reliable. Benchmarks are better references when choosing fans.

What kind of dollars are you using?

Are your current temps not acceptable?

My requirements: 50CFM+, <25dB

Top 3 fans: Enermax TwisterPressure, Cougar Vortex PWM, Be Quiet! Silent Wings 2.

Akasa Apache/Rosewill Hyperborea (Depending on location) are good fans too, lower cost than my top 3.

For the Prodigy, I'd do 3 intake (2 front, 1 top forward) fans and 1 exhaust (Rear).

INTEL CORE i5-7600K | ASUS ROG STRIX B250i GAMING | CRUCIAL BALLISTIX SPORT LT 16GB | EVGA GTX 970 SC | EVGA B3 550W
SAMSUNG 850 EVO 250GB | CRYORIG M9i | BE QUIET! PURE WINGS 2| FRACTAL DESIGN DEFINE NANO S

I would check to see whether your temps were fine or not before preemptively buying extra fans.
