Noob question about 3pin fans.

Go to solution Solved by LogicalDrm,

Understood. So to sum up I would have to go to BIOS and manually change the voltage and lower it so it would lessen the noise right?

Yeah. That would be the easiest way. Other is to use Asus software which does the same thing. Difference is that software has to be loaded with windows to work so fans will be at full speed at boot.

Is there any way to control 3pin fans? maybe a fan splitter that has a 4pin header? Sorry just building my first PC and I notice that my corsair 120mm was a little loud(maybe running at max speed).

Thanks for the suggestions :D

Fan controller that you put into a 5.25" bay. It uses voltage to control it.

So, no choice but to get a fan controller? Is it necessary tho?

You can control via it via the motherboard header through the software, or directly wire it into the PSU at a lower voltage like 5V or 7V if silence is what you are trying to get.

3 pin fans by design cannot be controlled.  If you have a Asus mobo, the fan headers are able to control 3/4 pin header fans.

Yes they can. YOu need a motherboard with good voltage control or a fan controller.

There will either be a menu to set a fan curve or you can set a specific mode/voltage. The voltages are usually 5V/7V/12V (Recommend 7V) and modes are usually Silent/Balanced/Turbo which correspond to 5V/7V/12V. For fan curve just set as you see fit.

That's just truck load of bullshit. Even two pin fans can be controlled by voltage. You don't even need Asus mobo to do this. MSI's Z97 boards are good also, Gigabytes Z87 not so much.

Under PC Health in BIOS. Or you can use AI Suite/ Fan Xpert if your mobo is supported by it.

Its more about making forums better by eliminating stupid or otherwise wrong answers. Someone might look this later and think that only Asus makes mobos that can control 3pins. Which is incorrect.
