Driver for old Samsung monitor, will it work on 8.1?

Serfrank

I upgraded from Win 7 to 8.1 and now my HDD is impersonating an SSD when it comes to booting up.

The only problem is that I have an old Samsung SyncMaster 940BW which is now detected as generic non plug and play by Windows, so I can't set the native resolution of 1440x900.

I could install the drivers for this monitor, but they are very old (march 13th 2007) and I'm not sure if they'll work correctly with 8.1.

So now I've got 2 options:

1. Try to install the driver (what would be the worst case scenario if it's not compatible with the OS?)

2. Set a custom resolution, in this case native 1440x900, but I have no idea what's the best way to do that without messing up.

When I click "set custom resolution" in the NVIDIA control panel, there's a whole bunch of warnings that it might make my monitor useless, mess with my BIOS, blow up my computer, create a black hole, etc, so I'm a bit scared. As long as I set the native resolution the monitor is intended to use, there shouldn't be any problems, right?

Here's the monitor page by the way: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/940BW#

Just set the resolution within the NVIDIA Driver. It will not have any adverse effects.

I'm using VGA, sorry I should've said that before.

That may be your problem rather than the driver, try using a digital interface like DVI-D, HDMI or DisplayPort.

Yeah, I have no DVI cables, damn  :D

I'll just try and install the driver for now...

i have never had any problems with windows 7 drivers on 8.1 :D

This is not even a windows 7 driver, it supports up to Vista. If it worked on 7, maybe it should work for 8.1

Says driver installed, still can't set native resolution. Maybe a reboot will do the job.

Yeah, sorry, I thought you already tried the driver  :P. Be sure to report back here if it works. I don't like unresolved issues.

The installer gave me 2 options: Analog and Digital. I clicked on analog because I'm using VGA.

My monitor is now detected in device manager, but I still can't set the native resolution  <_<
