An i5 is perfectly fine for just a gaming rig. Are you open to AMD gpu's ? as you get better value for money.

An i5 is minimum for gaming, and if you want to do something else while gaming with your computer like say watching a livestream the 4 extra logical cores of an i7 are a must imho.

Also having an ssd is the biggest value upgrade in general usage speed you can get, so it is definitely recomended.

The third point I want to make is that the slighly lower tier of graphics card compared to the absolute high end is usually a much better value. So in your case a 780 (or 2 in the future) will deliver much more bang for the buck than the 780 ti.

Taking all of those thoughts into consideration, option 3 is clearly the best way to go.

oh, and unless you actually want to upgrade to up to 32GB of ram in the future, rather get 2x 4GB of sticks and another 2 later maybe. That way you can use your memory in dual channel which results in about a 10% increase in general performance.

helped building up the CPU Overclocking Database and GPU Overclocking Database, check them out ;)
