New Build for video editing.

Basically im looking to build a new machine. The machine I currently use is a very powerful one processor wise. Im looking for faster editing. Haswell has my attention with the quik sync feature.

Current machine

Intel Xeon e5 2650

256GB raid 0 SSD primary drive/ 15TB raid 5 WDred array connected via sata6

Asus z9ws dual 2011 mobo

windows 7 ultimate 64 bit

primary software used is Cyberlink more specific is the media suite offered. more more specific is PD11 and espresso 6.7

I have tried a HD6990 and HD6990crosfire. both of these affect render times making them slower. The CPU is faster than 2 top of the line gaming cards even if they have a combined 6xxx something amount of stream processors and the most ROP. also doesnt matter what sdk or which set of drivers. have i seen this used in my benchmarks? yes highest was 39% encode and decode on a single chip. at no point did the software use 4 gpus.

other than speed my next concern is power. I want to get down low. not 900 i want more along the lines of 100 if at all possible.

i am thinking about going with a 4th gen haswell 4770

then for the mobo: MSI Z97 XPOWER AC LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Extended ATX Intel Motherboard

raid 0 SSD

I will upgrade to a usb3.0 interface on my raid 5

lastly what im left with is the GPU. I do not want another ati card and i do not need cuda. this is video editing and conversion. although i really like this nvenc feature on the GTX series. If i made the leap and purchased a GTX card i would want to know if Cyberlink can take advantage of the nvenc and the lucid logics system which is being used with quik sync

It would mean the differece in hundreds of FPC. Haswell hits the 500ish mark for encode and decode.

anyways let me know if there are benchmarks out there for what im thinking about.

please use http://pcpartpicker.com and make a machine there, then we'll read.

That xeon is faster than any i7, if you have a dual socket motherboard the obvious choice is to get another identical xeon if you want more performance. Going to the 4770 would be a performance downgrade.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Thanks for fast responses I highly appreciate it.

What I have found so far with using the xeons is I have incredible multitasking abilities but I'm finding they are not suited for this digital media creation. They have lots of benefits but not in the area I'm using them with. If I were using cinema 4d or anything with compute power the xeons partnered with a huge amount of cuda cores or stream processors would devastate anything pitted against them. I have benchmarked some if those test and they score way up there. When it comes to codecs and video I want to spend less time accomplishing those task and use less electricity doing so. Using less power and accomplishing the task faster means the machine will be more efficient. This gives me time to complete projects faster and reduce the ownership cost associated with the equivilant of my gas guzzling 502 big block:) Even though I have 16 cores none of them are ever pegged to max and most often, not all of them are used. If I run any hardware acceleration my times go up and the CPU is used even less.

Anyone know render times of a gtx580 or 680 or 6990 compared with 4770 or my e5 2650 say mpeg2 converted to.mp4. All of the times compared to quik sync are insanity.

  • 2 months later...

Just to update I have now completed a build and need some help configuring it. Msi g55sli motherboard 4790k. Crucial m550 m.2 arc soft media converttor 8 virtue MVP and a zotac gtx730. Need help with the igpu from the i7 arcsofft sees the qquiksync option but the gtx is faster. Any idea.?

Wait changed a setting and now it's so fast that flames are shooting out the back of my case.

Not sure if Linus ever reads these. I'd like to thank him for making the video show casing quik sqnc and lucite virtue.

If you do decide to go with LGA1150, get the i7-4790K. It has a 500MHz higher base clock than the i7-4770K.

"other than speed my next concern is power. I want to get down low. not 900 i want more along the lines of 100 if at all possible." - This sentence confuses me. What are you trying to say?

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

Good point on the sentence structure.  My goal was to build a machine that would be near 100watts and that would be faster at doing task. The xeon allows for more programs to be running but, they run at lower speeds. lots of things happening at 2 GHz it allowed me to have tons of things open and running but, some took forever to complete even though the CPU was never maxed out.

The HD6990s In crossfire take way to much wattage for what I do with a computer. I think with programs like cinema 4d or something with rendering and ray tracing more stream processors would be excellent. On the upside to the software, I can select options that were not available before like hardware encoding. I can also take advantage of PD11 true velocity3.

Found a program that can use quik sync or cuda. It can also use the nvenc chip on the 730. The program converts video files and lets you select coding and decoding hardware. DVD fab 9 and it supports amd app. It's expensive.
