GTA V vram usage + GTX 970?

cheeze_tartz
Go to solution Solved by SageC,

In that case, should I just get a 290x? for a true 4GB amount of vram

The 970 will still outperform the 290X in most cases by a little bit despite the VRAM issue, so I wouldn't really worry about the whole 3.5GB thing.

So the menu for GTA V tells how much Vram usage on the GPU. If the settings pass 3,500mb will the performance decrease?

  • Yes.
  • No.
  • Maybe.
  • What resolution?
  • Only at first it might stutter.
  • Try turning your settings down.
  • Is the card overclocked?

There you go, guys. No need for any responses. There's all the answers you're going to get. :-)

I don't think the bar in the menu actually has anything to do with the amount of VRAM required and really is just there for a rough ball park.

If you get a 970, are you going to part with your 290xs? Or at least one? I'm always in the market for a card to do some OpenCL work with. :-)

So the menu for GTA V tells how much Vram usage on the GPU. If the settings pass 3,500mb will the performance decrease?

The GTX 970 isn't powerful enough to drive the game at settings recommending 3.5 GB VRAM in the menu if you want 60 fps locked. You'd need a Titan X to really begin thinking about settings that aggressive on a single card. Also, the settings I run at (mostly ultra and very high) recommend only 2.5 GB, but use up to 3.3 GB in game.

I'm guessing it could be a real problem at that resolution, but you gotta find benchmarks to really see. That's 70% of 4k resolution and 970 SLI isn't that great a 4k option.

I am not planning on playing on ultra locked at 60 FPS. Just around 45-50 FPS, with most settings on Very High/Ultra.
